nascar is completely different because they are on a closed track, the drivers are trained for several years before competeing, and the cars are far superior to any road car. Regarding the distance behind a vehicle at 70 mph several factors come into play, weather conditions, tire quality, braking distance, total down force of the car, just to name a few. However, i believe the law is around 5 feet for every 10 mph (at least thats what i have heard)

A skilled driver going at 140 mph is much safer than some scared old person driving some generic normal car. Sure people could hit him, but thats not exactly his fault is it.
