Lol...my junior year in high school we used blue shades as part of our show and I got to play the clarinet solo :) I played it at basically every game over a loud speaker! It was fun and wasn't too bad on sound quality :)

I love this orchestration of Blue Shades...I played this maybe 10-15 years ago in HS on the stopped horn. I hear the NYPhila almost weekly (when in town) and this is still one of my favortie youtube pieces. Congrats to all of you

Oh, the memories! After we performed this piece in the East Kentwood HS Wind Ensemble (in Michigan), someone from another school asked one of our directors where the clarinetist was planning to go to school next year.

To which the director replied, "East Kentwood."

WOW, who ever is playing the clarinet solo on here is absolutely amazing!

and i play bass clarinet too. i've convinced my band director to get this song specifically because all of the solo parts on our band are covered by seniors so this shall be interesting...

anyone have any tips for me, i haven't seen the music yet, since it hasn't come in, but when it does i'll take a look...but until then...yeah anything you think i should do?

I agree with you! I play bass clarinet and this is by far one of the hardest bass clarinet part I have played! No doubt it's a very sexy piece of music for bass clarinet though.

yeah, percussion is pretty cool. I played 1st Bass Clarinet on this and it rocked. I wish I get to play this again someday. BTW, we did NOT slow down that solo section in the middle. It sounds so much better.

The funny thing about this song is the flute solo in the middle of it. Our band director at our university had Frank Ticheli himself come and conduct his own songs for our Festival of Bands finally ending in a performance at our concert hall with "Blue Shades." Oddly enough, when our soloist played the solo, he was very mad and said "I dunno where in the music it says to slow down on that solo. I still don't understand why everyone does it. Play at the same tempo, play it fast!"

wait that is so relieving. Almost every video on here has that part slowed down, and its my favorite part of this entire piece (not just the flute, but the flute to the clarinet to the bass clarinet to the tuba/double bass/low instrument used in that particular video.
