@elurban3d sure :) You should always ask before petting any working dog. Some working dogs can not be pet because it can be too distracting. When these dogs are off duty they are like any other dog, but when they are working they need to focus on their job.
I am interested in becoming a puppy raiser, I have been torn between becoming a raiser for Guide dogs for the blind or becoming a raiser for Guide dogs of America. I have a puppy raising group for both in my area. I know you are a raiser for GDB but do you know anything about GDA's raising program, and what the pro's and con's to raising for GDB and GDA are?
You guys are doing a wonderful job with Ricki. You are doing all you can to socialise Ricki and to highlight the areas her trainers will need to continue to work on with her. Having known flaws is a 150 times better than a 'good' dog who hasn't had the exposure that Ricki has had.
I love seeing you being repetitive - you are helping Ricki be the best dog she can be
I've been following the GUGP info on FB for the last little while and decided to make a youtube account so I can send out my comments! You're doing a spectacular job raising Ricki! I haven't seen all the episodes but as you mentioned in this one you've been quite repetitive. There's nothing to fear about repetition. It's what makes a great guide dog. Repetition and consistency are the key and ideal traits in being a successful handler. (had to make this two parts)
(Part 2:) I along with many other people appreciate the work the puppy raisers do to raise these dogs. I received my female, yellow lab/golden retreiver cross in August 2008 from Guide Dogs for the Blind in San Rafael, CA and have had such a wonderful experience. Keep up the excellent work and believe me when graduation comes the feeling of independence and confidence these dogs brings to the students receiving their dogs is such a wonderful feeling for everyone. Thank you! :)
I didn't even think about repetitive references to distractions until you brought it up. In other words, this is just a really interesting series you've been bringing us. I always look forward to seeing these episodes. Hopefully Ricki can keep improving and overcoming obstacles. Thanks for another great production!
Repetitive? I call this Progression! Ricki seems to keep doing her thing getting better and better. Love this series and hate to hear we've only got a bit more with her. Someone is going to be happy their Guide Dog is a Celebrity! :)
Repetition is what puppy raising is all about! Keep up the good work.

Can you explain your comment about letting the child pet Ricki? Are you normally not allowed to let kids play with Ricki while she's in training?

the squirells are so cute and bushy, no wonder RIcki is distracted, well, just out of curiousity, what is the golden statue there for?

My dog has squirrel distractions too. ;) You're not alone!
Also, I have a question: I think that a lot of the skills taught to guide dog puppies are important to teach to regular puppies as well. Do you agree?
