  • Great videos (both part 1 and 2) with performance data, cadence, watt output, HR all superimposed. Thanks for giving me some inspiration. My best time is 26 minutes so far. How much were you out of the saddle and where? Any suggestions for achieving a better time on OLH are appreciated!

  • @bluhorizan Thanks! I have another video where I followed another rider the entire way up. You can see exactly where he stands and I do much the same. But this varies a lot from person to person - I even know someone who stands the whole way!

  • @biketelemetry Hmm, YouTube won't let me post a link, even to another YouTube video. You can search for "Old La Honda with the Noon Ride 6-29-2011" to find it.

  • If I may ask, how old and what's your max HR? From that final effort, looks to be about 185? I'm just curious how close to max you are to hold a sustained ~300W.

  • @8584zender I'm in my early 40's. My max HR is about 190. I actually saw 189 trying to break away from the group ride today about 1km ahead of the final sprint (I didn't make it)! For a sustained effort like OLH, I have to back off from that to around 180 or I'll blow up. Be warned that correlation between heart rate and performance varies a lot between individuals.

  • Nice job!

  • Nice vid! BTW, what crank/cassette combo did you use?

  • @parmijo I was running a compact crank (50/34), and my preferred cassette is a 12-25 (and this is what the video indicates too). However, I had changed out the cassette for a 12-27 for Welch Creek a couple of weeks earlier and I only swapped it out again just last week. So I'm pretty sure this OLH run was actually with a 12-27 cassette. It also depends on my fitness level - at best fitness the 12-25 is faster as I can power up the short steeper grades without having to drop down. Cheers!

  • 652w right at the end! NICE!

  • @cameltrophy3 That's because I knew I was right on 20 minute pace and just wanted to get under so that I didn't have to come back to this hill in 2010! Getting under 20 minutes on OLH is an annual objective and this year it took me until the end of October to get there.
