To update I was lucky to See Youssou when he toured with Peter Gabriel in the late 1980's..

I saw them at the Spectrum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA..

The song is "Immigrés/Bitim Rew" off the Immigrés album..

i'm sorta of just finding out about this incredible music, and i'm lovin' it! amazing stuff! what are some other notable African performers, bands, etc. that i should check out? i'd really like to know about this wonderful music, esp. any notable guitarists. i'm a serious guitar nut! my favorite style of music is the Blues, and i know that John Lee Hooker and Jr. Kimbrough, among others, have been compared to African guitarists, as far as their style of playing goes. thanks for any help!

This song is off the Immigres album.. I am luck to have seen Youssou when he toured with Peter Gabriel in the late 1980's.. Really opened my eyes to music outside of the contemporary rock I was listening to.. I have the Immigres album (cd).. and Love it..

From there, I found Ethiopian music, and from there, Salif Keita. That got my attention real quick. I had heard of Youssou N'Dour before but this is the first time I have heard him perform.

Comparing youssou to an American rapper is the same as comparing Stevie Wonder or Bob Marley to a rapper. It's ridiculous, rappers are about money and not lasting art. I'm African American and I don't listen to them for music there are so many others Anthony Hamilton, Ledisi, Kem, India Arie, the Marleys, Femi Kuti, King Sunny Ade, so many other artists of African descent who are incredible but don't get the media coverage that rappers do.
