Awesome sound, thanks for your post! Do you know where this version was recorded? Sorry if it was already asked and answered in a previous comment that I haven't noticed.
@Laserkev Thank you for the info. I compared this to the boot from Southampton I have and you're totally correct. This sounds upgraded and that must be why I didn't recognise it right away!
@Laserkev Thanks for your offer! I wouldn't mind listening to the whole version of that boot, but I'd be sorry to have you taking the trouble, also because I already have an older version of that gig. Full concerts and great Genesis music are always welcome anyway :)
"Footfalls made him stray from the path prepared for him" .. how cool is that! oh to die for! Tony Bank's finest. Genesis stands the test of time. We shall never see them play together again, what a shame..
@WintersWar: I was in Poitiers (France) the 30th of May 1978.
That was so amazing.
What you've said about the audience is absolutely true: at that time people attended Genesis concerts for the MUSIC. Nothing else, nobody dancing, everyone sat down and listening "religiously"...

I agree with Skintrade. Why is there always comments on every Genesis posting, arguing who was better - Peter or Phil, as vocalists! Sad twats who have nothing better to do. Just enjoy Genesis in all its might!
@georgeman2468 In my opinion:i like both as singers a lot and think both are great singers,
Difference is:peter gabriel isn't as corny as phil collins in lyrics, and is more rock.
Phil collins has that really good voice and the sax and drums that makes him quite talented. The best songs are when steve hackett phil collins and peter gabriel are together.

Fuck you, I'm a bigger Genesis fan than you'll ever be, and at least I know when something is shit. Sounds like someone gave Tony Banks a piano and way too much time. Listen to SEBTP or Foxtrot for Christ's sake.
you have just proven how much of an idiot you are. "im a bigger genesis fan than you'll ever be" who actually says this outside of a 16 year old trying to prove how cool they are? This song is a great song and if you don't like it, that is all it means..YOU don't like it.

While taste in music is subjective and you are certainly free to dislike this song, there is no question it is an impressively complex piece of work. It doesn't make a great deal of sense to say you like Foxtrot and Selling England and you hate this song, as Banks' writing on those albums (and he wrote more of the music than anyone else) is not dissimilar to this. Personally, I think this is one of Genesis' best, though I don't care for some of the synth sounds.
I think the Three sides live version is the best one. Even better then the studio version. Like 'he walked into a valley is sung. Phil is just phrasing a lot better than on the studio album. A true masterpiece. Of course gently guided by Firth, Cinema show and Driving the last spike.
I am not religious but this interpretation of Jesus Christ is so humanizing and visceral. You cant be a leader unless you can lead when you are lost. Breathtaking presentation.
oh yea well i saw them w/ hacket in '77 and i promise you it was indescribably wonderful. the material w/ gabriel and this line up thru wind and wuthering , imho, created the sound and the fan base that enabled their popularity from then on. the more pop oriented sound made their music available to practically the entire world - their (and phil's) greatness can be heard in every song to this day!
I was actually @ the September 6th, 1977' Wind and Wuthering tour concert @ Keil auditorium in St. Louis Mo. I was 16 years old and through my life have attended a least 200 concerts. Ranging from Pink Floyd, Led Zepplin, Yes, ELP, Deep Purple, Frank Zappa and the Mothers, etc. To this day that remains the best live performance I've ever seen or heard! Period!
Pretty good live version -love this song. What are the details on this recording? BTW, "Trick" and "Wind" are 2 of my favorite G albums. Who really gives a shit about Phil vs. Peter / post Hackett G? It is what it is, dick-heads.
Just a few points regarding Genesis' supposed religious affiliations:
- There is no separation between church and state in England: in the 1960s nearly all schools started the day with religious assembly
- p49-50 of Armando Gallo's book "I Know What I Like" describes the background behind "Supper's Ready" and includes Peter Gabriel's quote, "The cross, as a thing, meant nothing to me."
- The name Genesis came from Jonathan King. He used the name to signify "a beginning of a new sound" (p14)
One for the vine 2: Then one whose faith had died Fled back up the mountainside, But before the top was made, A misplaced footfall made him stray From the path prepared for him. Off of the mountain, On to a wilderness of ice. This unexpected vision made him stand and shake with fear, But nothing was his fright compared with those who saw him appear. Terror filled their minds with awe. Simple were the folk who lived Upon this frozen wave.
Duke was the last half decent product after Wind and Wuthering..... too bad as I think they could still put out good quality material today if they wanted....
hackett was best in small doses, which was in the genesis structure, tony's call was right.
I happen to agree with how tony laid out the band, emphasis on keys and drums and the lead singer. hackett is a great talent, but all the bands put so much emphasis on guitar, it got old, genesis took another direction..which I'm glad.
i disagree.... after steve left, genesis evolved into a "pop" band, with some subtle references at times to their progressive roots. Steve, to this today, still puts out progressive sounding material. Steve/Peter have remained the truest to their classical and progressive roots ... and this music (new and old) is what I continue to listen to today. I've forgotten all about songs like "That's all" and "Invisible Touch" (that is I did until your comment just reminded me of that "pop" crap)
Wich is the crime to become in a "pop" band? I think they did what they wanted to...everything and everyone changes. To say that Steve and Peter are more talented than Phil cos they continued doing the same is not a valid argument. A real fact is that Phil until today is the most succesful of all of them and a legend.
perhaps more successful financially, but not as in terms of a "legend". look who's making the better, lasting, time-tested music today ... Peter and Steve.
@WintersWar I agree with you.But remember Genesis has always had a huge cross over fan base then alot of bands tend to have after 1980.Because from the different style of music from the 70s and then 80s early 90s..I personaly thought both were very good even those they were different.Buts it all in tast.
For those who says that Hackett this Hackett that, could you tell me what Hackett did after leaving Genesis? A complete failure!! The worst decition made by Hackett in his entire life. Genesis continued cos Phil is the greatest talent ever, Mike and Tony are pretty good also but when Phil left....what happened? They were not the same and quit. That's the only true.
I respect your feeling regarding Steve, but something is true, after Hackett leave Genesis he always was introduced as "the former" member of Genesis, as solo artist he was consistent with his idea about music but he wasn't succesful at all. To say that Phil stopped doing music since early 80's is so unreal...I agree that maybe after But Seriously his albums were not the same but always more succesful than Hackett, Phil is a star, Steve a good part of a band.
Well, don't ask me why, I love and admire the Genesis music, I've been a Genesis fan for a long long time, Phil Collins is one of the greatest musicians in rock history, Tony banks is a genious, I love his style and his music, but I stopped buying Genesis albums after Seconds Out, with the exception of ATTWT,D, and Abacab, instead, I've bought every single Hackett album, bacuse I strongly believe that Steve has earned respect world wide because of his unique, talented, non commercial beliefs...
Unfortunately, for old Genesis fans like myself, Phil, Tony and Mike, although, very good musicians and composers, lost some respect after going commercial, that kind of respect that can only be achieved and maintained through many years not for the amount of money you make but for the true faithfulnes to your beliefs in Good Music, Music that is trascendent to your spirit, that's why Steve Hackett was, is and will be respected forever ...
Part 2 of my comment: Still - even with any inconsistencies - I use isolated lines to build/strengthen my faith in Jesus/God (e.g., "This is he, God's chosen one, who's come to save us from all our oppressors. We shall be kings on this world")...I do the same thing with some of the later lines in Supper's Ready (e.g., "Lord of Lords, King of Kings...", etc.)...
Well,i definetly know that these guys were raised Christian, went to Christian school9Pete,Tony and Mike)but they haven't publicly discussed their beliefs-Many people say that Peter is pagan. But I'm still fervently praying for Phil and Pete specifically because i feel they have alot of potential spiritually...
Collins has had a wide audience/popularity, so his impact could be great if he got saved...given Gabriel's Genesis-period popularity (and those fans pining for a resurrection of a Gabriel-based Genesis) and any professed paganistic beliefs, I'm thinking that Peter's salvation might be more Pauline (Acts 9) - possibly enough to nearly eclipse the impact of Collins' salvation...but God is ultimately in charge of His work (regarding how the gospel is spread)...
Maybe we can agree in prayer that the whole band will come to the knowledge of Jesus Christ.Wasn't too keen on their "Jesus He Knows Me" Vid-It kinda sent a bad message-What do you think?
Yes, I agree with you about praying for them all...I have not seen the video yet...I sent Parts 1 & 2 to your YT account...I had difficulty posting after my most recent comment...
Sorry guysm but this song isn´t about spirituality but about politics and how it USES faith. Please read the lyrics as a whole and don´t take out single lines like and then interpret the whole song..
Part 1 of my comment: I'm a born-again believer, and I like (mostly 70's) Genesis music (I try to be careful about the lyrics, etc.)...I think there may be allusions to Jesus but not consistently...for example, in the line "I'll play the game you want me," it sounds like this "Messiah-figure" is somewhat half-hearted and cynical about his role (vs. Jesus fully believing in His mission)..also, he (in the song) had fright/fear - while God's Word (synonymous with Jesus Himself) discourages fear...
I do like, and very much, the sound in this live recording because Steve's guitar sounds the way it should've sounded back on those two albums W & W and T.O.T.T, I mean UP FRONT AND NOT HIDDEN AWAY, the way Steve wanted it ( and millions of fans too) not the way Tony and Mike and perhaps Phill wanted it, and after 31 years of wondering why Steve left, COME ON ! This posting proves it !
Great track from the Best post Gabriel Genesis album. The loss of Steve Hackett would effect the Genesis albums to come, for me he was a bigger loss to the band than losing Peter Gabriel. Compare his albums the Drivel Genesis produced 1981 onwards. Just my opinion of course
Coincido con Diegoquemero. Genesis perdió razón de ser y calidad compositiva al irse Hackett, transformándose en una copia de si mismo. El mismo fenómeno se dio con Pink Floyd al partir Roger Waters.
Yep! It's quite a bit faster, as to be expected during live performances. No worries, though. It still carries the emotional weight of the song very well, don't you think?
Absolutely, there seems to be a different groove to it maybe in part because of Chester's drumming style. But Mike also plays bass with a more animated style on that version too. Overall it has a looser feel to it that makes it different but just as good as the original.
Voilà une chanson qui prouve que Genesis pouvait exister sans Peter Gabriel. Hélas, pourquoi s'être enfermé dans la boîte à rythme et dans le commercial par la suite?
It's great to hear this but you should indicate in the title and description this is AUDIO only. It's very misleading otherwise. I thought this was video when it turned up in the search, I got all excited.

One for the Vine:
Fifty thousand men were sent to do the will of one.
His claim was phrased quite simply, though he never voiced it loud,

In his name they could slaughter, for his name they could die.
Though many there were believed in him, still more were sure he lied,

Is it me, or does this seem to be playing a bit fast?
knouraee 3 years ago
Yep! It's quite a bit faster, as to be expected during live performances. No worries, though. It still carries the emotional weight of the song very well, don't you think?

Ever hear the Seconds Out version of The Lamb Lies Down... That one seems to FLY by. It gives a nice energy to it, but it ends too quickly.

Hi, do you have a video or just the music of "Spot the Pigeon", I never heard it!!!!
Thanks
BVERRIER 3 years ago
There is no video of it. Search keywords 'spot the pigeon genesis' on youtube and you'll be able to find the audio.

La version con Steve Hackett es muy superior, ya sin el, la canción pierde mucha calidad. Me queda con esta versión.

The Three Sides Live version is much better.
