This is kind of similar to that skit on Sesame Street where Cookie Monster goes to the library and asks the librarian for different books and a box of cookies. The librarian kept telling him he didn't have cookies, and finally lost his temper. I liked his faint at the end.
This is a vaudeville joke; a guy walks into a business (library, restaurant, bakery, mortuary) and asks for something they don't have. The salesperson get exasperated, and the customer keeps asking for it in a fog.
Sesame Street has the same skit with Cookie Monster in a library; NO COOKIES, JUST BOOKS!!!!!
Just like the Jack in the Box video where the dog keeps asking for french fries and the Jack in the Box clown keeps trying to tell him...we dont' have any french fries today..then after the 3 time the dog asks for fries...the clown says..
Who put the ape in apricot? The dog says..nature did.
Then the clown says..who put the freak in french fries? The dog says..there ain't on freak in french fries..and the clown says..thats what im telling you..we dont have freaken french fries!! lol
It's funny because either the guy was either thick or he was just yanking the waitress' chain. Everytime she tells him that they're out of sweet rolls, she gets angrier and angrier until finally she couldn't take it anymore and went out screaming like a nut. Priceless, don't you think?
Well, you wanted an answer so I thought I give it to you, even if it is a rhetorical question. It's still funny in my book. And besides, it's the oldest cartoon gag in the book, like the "Animanics" episode when the Warners were atagonizing Miss Flameil by repeating everything she said before she went out the door screaming like a nut. That Electric Company skit must have been an inspiration for that gag. Check it out for yourself!
It definitely is the oldest and best gag in the book. I don't think jokes get any better than this - this is classic Vaudeville! Also, I agree with you on Miss Flameil - totally ripped from TEC!
I remember when Sesame Street not only did this with Cookie Monster and the librarian, but also in 1994 with Grungetta Grouch and Gina. I was reluctant to watch it the first time it aired, but if Sawing14 or anyone else had this clip, I'd try again to watch it in its entirely with the volume up. The 2'nd time Sesame did this, Grungetta kept wanting fruits and vegetables, but Gina said there were no fruits and vegetables about 5 times. Does YouTube have this rare Sesame Street clip?
They had a live-action skit with "eggs" that they'd run sometimes too, done the exact same way as this, with the guy at the table asking for everything with eggs despite the waitress telling him again and again they were out of eggs. After the woman would run out screaming, the guy at the table would end the skit with, "Or maybe a sweet roll."
Hilarious and pure classic! There was also a live-taped 'sequel' on the show, performed by Morgan Freeman and Hattie Winston, but instead of sweet rolls, the unavailable item was "Eggs." The last line (I think) may have been "I should've asked for a sweet roll."
YES, I remember that one! but this animated segment always sends me rolling, especially when the waitress' skin and hair literally change colors - this is a classic!
I remembered this on a whim; I am so glad you found it. My brothers and I would ask for sweet rolls when we would go to diners with my parents--my mom wanted to go LAWRARARARRR when we would do the routine!
I just love how the door appears out of nowhere. It's the freaking out of the waitress that makes this so funny. Thanks again for posting this. raposofan, and also for the archived "jazzy spies" segments.
I've worked in the service industry and I totally concur! Many a time I've wanted to scream at thick morons like the waitress did the Captain but haven't due to knowledge of real world consequences.
This has got to be the iconic Electric Company cartoon...If I recall correctly, TEC also had a live-action remake which took place in Vi's Diner; the difficult customer ordered eggs in that version, but the diner was still out of them. :-)
I've got the live-action version and will post it later this week if I have time. Hattie Winston plays the waitress, Morgan Freeman plays Young Fred, and they used a Scanimate machine to form the door in the back Hattie screams and runs out through. Even as a kid I remember thinking, "Hm, that wasn't as effective as the cartoon door was." lol.

If Kathleen Turner voiced the waitress, it would be funny to hear her emotional yell. Jim Carrey would make a great captain's voice.

The 1999 season of ZOOM did a remake of "The Sweet Roll" during ZOOM Playhouse that starred a couple of former ZOOMers, Zoe and Lynese.
