  • what's the matter, someone steal your sweet roll?

  • So is that a yes on the sweetroll?

  • At least it is not as hard to find Sweet Rolls in Skyrim...

  • let me guess

    someone stole their sweetrolls

  • What's wrong? Someone steal your sweetroll

  • LET ME GUESS

    SOMEONE STOLE YOUR SWEETROLL

  • Let me guess...someone stoll your sweet roll?

  • I used to be a Sweetroll like you, but then I took an adventurer to the knee.

  • let me guess, someone stole your sweet roll?

  • Let me guess. Someone stole your sweetroll...

  • nice clip thanks for sharing i enjoyed it =)

  • lol

  • Even better, they did a live version of this where the waitress storms out and the guy then says, "or maybe a sweet roll."

  • You know... I've seen McFarlane recycle this same gag on Family Guy numerous times.

  • Isn't there suppose to be a live action version of this sketch?

  • It is funny to me, because she is me and he is doing what each of my children hve done to me at one time or another. As a matter of fact, I have friends who do this sort of thing to me on a fairly regular basis...I say, "my husband has friends" who

do it. I am just an easy target.

  • Reminds me of the Cookie Monster at the library skit. I wonder which came first?

  • That was old fred from Yellow Submarine.

  • this waitress always reminded me of Florence from The Jeffersons

  • 1 person didn't get their sweet roll.

  • Nice video..thanks for sharing!

  • If Kathleen Turner voiced the waitress, it would be funny to hear her emotional yell. Jim Carrey would make a great captain's voice.

  • Its funny because they were out of sweet rolls.

  • This is kind of similar to that skit on Sesame Street where Cookie Monster goes to the library and asks the librarian for different books and a box of cookies. The librarian kept telling him he didn't have cookies, and finally lost his temper. I liked his faint at the end.

  • The 1999 season of ZOOM did a remake of "The Sweet Roll" during ZOOM Playhouse that starred a couple of former ZOOMers, Zoe and Lynese.

  • This is a vaudeville joke; a guy walks into a business (library, restaurant, bakery, mortuary) and asks for something they don't have. The salesperson get exasperated, and the customer keeps asking for it in a fog.

Sesame Street has the same skit with Cookie Monster in a library; NO COOKIES, JUST BOOKS!!!!!

  • Just like the Jack in the Box video where the dog keeps asking for french fries and the Jack in the Box clown keeps trying to tell him...we dont' have any french fries today..then after the 3 time the dog asks for fries...the clown says..

Who put the ape in apricot? The dog says..nature did.

Then the clown says..who put the freak in french fries? The dog says..there ain't on freak in french fries..and the clown says..thats what im telling you..we dont have freaken french fries!! lol

  • LMFAO- classic!!

  • lol at then end she sound like the crazy cat lady in the Simpsons

  • 0:29 What the hell kind of noise came out of that womans mouth LOL!

  • We used to yell "We are out of sweet rolls" when we were kids. Ahhh...the good old days.

  • Does this remind anybody of the diner scene from "Five Easy Pieces"?

  • This is a classic.

  • Gotta love them sweet rolls!

  • the guy looks like old fred from yellow submarine

    AHHHHHH HAAAA !!!! BEST!!

  • They did this in "ZOOM" too. Lynese played the customer and Zoe played the waitress.

  • Who is the captain? And, which restaurant would a sea captain patronize today?

  • who is the voice of the waitress.

    andrea martin?

  • Wasn't that patron in Yellow Submarine?

  • Love it! You know I still quote this skit a few times a week when someone does or says something stupid and doesn't get the point? LOL!

  • Is the Captain Morgan Freeman and the waitress Rita Moreno?

  • uhhhh jack and coke and sweet roll

  • This made me cry it's so dang funny :)

  • Jack Daniels and a sweet roll?

  • LOL!

  • LOL! She Went APESHIT!!! Still funny after all these years!!!

  • You want an answer, raposofan?

It's funny because either the guy was either thick or he was just yanking the waitress' chain. Everytime she tells him that they're out of sweet rolls, she gets angrier and angrier until finally she couldn't take it anymore and went out screaming like a nut. Priceless, don't you think?

  • Google "rhetorical question".

  • Well, you wanted an answer so I thought I give it to you, even if it is a rhetorical question. It's still funny in my book. And besides, it's the oldest cartoon gag in the book, like the "Animanics" episode when the Warners were atagonizing Miss Flameil by repeating everything she said before she went out the door screaming like a nut. That Electric Company skit must have been an inspiration for that gag. Check it out for yourself!

  • It definitely is the oldest and best gag in the book. I don't think jokes get any better than this - this is classic Vaudeville! Also, I agree with you on Miss Flameil - totally ripped from TEC!

  • Jagermeister and a sweet roll?

  • Thank you.

  • @ebf1957

    We're OUT of sweet rolls!

  • you and a sweet roll?

  • Grey Goose and a sweet roll?

  • LMAO@PeekaBooo08

  • @PeekaBooo08 Or Ketel in a crunch.LOL.

  • @PeekaBooo08

WE ARE OUT OF SWEET ROLLS!

  • I'd forgotten about this. Fantastic clip! Thanks for posting this.

  • can of beer and a sweet roll?

  • One of the funniest things I have ever seen. I laughed when I saw it on "The Electric Company" when I ws 10, and I am laughing now.

  • I've never seen any of these. I've never never even heard of this before, but I'm so glad I found them. They're funny! :D

  • "rahwrlerlaaaarr!"

  • It prepared you for life-it taught you that,in general, people only hear ten percent of what you say!LOL!

    If that.

  • I remember when Sesame Street not only did this with Cookie Monster and the librarian, but also in 1994 with Grungetta Grouch and Gina. I was reluctant to watch it the first time it aired, but if Sawing14 or anyone else had this clip, I'd try again to watch it in its entirely with the volume up. The 2'nd time Sesame did this, Grungetta kept wanting fruits and vegetables, but Gina said there were no fruits and vegetables about 5 times. Does YouTube have this rare Sesame Street clip?
  • this is just like the skit from sesame street with the librarian and cookie monster. "we don't have any cookies in the library!! Just books!!"

  • They had a live-action skit with "eggs" that they'd run sometimes too, done the exact same way as this, with the guy at the table asking for everything with eggs despite the waitress telling him again and again they were out of eggs. After the woman would run out screaming, the guy at the table would end the skit with, "Or maybe a sweet roll."

  • @quincyhughes

I know, and would love to see that one again. Anyone got a copy?

  • Hilarious and pure classic! There was also a live-taped 'sequel' on the show, performed by Morgan Freeman and Hattie Winston, but instead of sweet rolls, the unavailable item was "Eggs." The last line (I think) may have been "I should've asked for a sweet roll."

  • YES, I remember that one! but this animated segment always sends me rolling, especially when the waitress' skin and hair literally change colors - this is a classic!

  • @SnocksRocks Yep! After Hattie stormed out, Morgan said, I believe, "Or maybe I'll have a sweet roll."

  • XD LOL

  • I LOVE this bit! I remember watching it with my kids so many years ago, I never thought I'd get to see it again. Thanks!!

  • LOL-ROTF

  • same as sesame street's there are no cookies in the library!! lol

  • I remembered this on a whim; I am so glad you found it. My brothers and I would ask for sweet rolls when we would go to diners with my parents--my mom wanted to go LAWRARARARRR when we would do the routine!

  • this is the best

  • " Okay then i'll just have a sweet roll." Great classic from The Electric Company.

  • What a ball buster that character was...

  • Gut-busting classic, i tell you what!

  • They are OUT of sweet rolls!!

  • Okay then, I'll just have a sweet roll.

  • Why are women so emotional? All the guy wanted was a sweet roll.

  • Lolllllllll

  • @davidls11

But only after being told they were out of sweet rolls about seven times!

  • Thank you raposofan. It has been about 25 years since I have seen this wonderful chilehood memory.

  • You are absolutely welcome :)

    - Heather

  • There aint no friggin french fries....

  • Anybody got the live-action version? Eggs are the Captain's thing there.

  • They guy looks like Young Fred on Yellow Submarine

  • Talking to my dad is exactly like this, on a daily basis. It's amazing that nobody has killed him yet.

  • I just love how the door appears out of nowhere. It's the freaking out of the waitress that makes this so funny. Thanks again for posting this. raposofan, and also for the archived "jazzy spies" segments.

  • You are quite welcome! :D

  • best 30 seconds of my life is watching this, so funny!!

  • This was awesome! Thanks!!!!!

  • W: Good. Can you spell the "straw" in strawberry?

    C: s-t-r-a-w.

W: Right. Now, can you spell the "f---" in chocolate?

    C: There's no "f---" in chocolate.

    W: That's what I'm trying to tell you. THERE'S NO F---IN' CHOCOLATE! :)

  • Heh heh. That's actually pretty good. :D

  • Sweet (roll) memories! This also reminds me of a great joke.

    Waiter: What'll you have?

Customer: Donut and chocolate ice cream.

W: Sorry, miss, we're out of chocolate.

C: OK, then, apple pie and chocolate ice cream.

W: Sorry, miss, we're out of chocolate.

C: OK, then, apple fritter and chocolate ice cream.

W: Look, lady, can you spell the "van" in vanilla?

C: v-a-n. (continued in next post)

  • I remember this....I work in retail and it's amazing how many people are as thick as this guy.

  • YOU ARE SO RIGHT.

  • I've worked in the service industry and I totally concur! Many a time I've wanted to scream at thick morons like the waitress did the Captain but haven't due to knowledge of real world consequences.

  • Maybe that captain's been out at sea too long to think straight. He probably never gets any sweet rolls when out at sea.

  • he may not get any sweet rolls when out at sea, but he probably gets it in the sticky buns though.

  • I'll be looking forward to the live-action skit

  • Yes, I remember this one too, as well as the live re-make. I remember my whole family thinking this one was so funny.

  • This has got to be the iconic Electric Company cartoon...If I recall correctly, TEC also had a live-action remake which took place in Vi's Diner; the difficult customer ordered eggs in that version, but the diner was still out of them. :-)

  • I've got the live-action version and will post it later this week if I have time. Hattie Winston plays the waitress, Morgan Freeman plays Young Fred, and they used a Scanimate machine to form the door in the back Hattie screams and runs out through. Even as a kid I remember thinking, "Hm, that wasn't as effective as the cartoon door was." lol.

  • oh that's great. I was hoping someone had the live version of the sweet roll skit. I thought that was one of the funnier skits as a child.
