I recommend getting your hands on a copy of the Genki textbook, workbook, and CDs. As far as learning Japanese, they are absolutely indispensable, especially from a self-studying point of view. Also, watch a lot of Japanese TV/Dramas. I can't recommend anime for learning Japanese, but you'll pick up a lot of slang and nuances from watching straight up TV. Plus, you'll get listening practice in if you're studying without a partner.

母語が英語の人には、フランス語は結構簡単です。たしかに、男性­／女性のところは難しいけど、発音や文法や単語は分かりやすいで­す。日本人には違うけど、私はアメリカ人ですからね。（難しいと­ころはないと言ってるワケない）

でも、誰に聞いても（言語学者）、日本は１〜３番の難しい言語の­中です。（ごめん。なんか、あれは文法間違ってると思うけど・・­・）たしかに、漢字は中国語の方が多いけど、中国語は、部首で発­音と意味が大体分かります。漢字を使い始める前に、日本語は円熟­されたから、漢字の使い方はロジックがないんです。音読み、訓読­み、ひらがな、カタカナもあるから、日本語の文字は言語の中で一­番難しいと思われます。

文法も単語も英語と全然違うから、私には難しいです。カタカナの­単語が多いけど、その単語は意味は（英語からの単語でも）違うで­す。

日本人にはどうか分からないけど、アメリカ人には、日本語の方が­フランス語より難しいです。

Before japanese, I was studying german. But my ex got fed up with my love for Japan he literally payed the first semester in my university - the only good thing he did in 5 years.
