Using a pick or your fingers, doesn't matter. Use both, depending on the particular sound you need, or fits. To limit yourself to either, you only tell the world you are not as good as you could be I use what ever feels/sounds right. I use my fingers most of the time, and can actually play faster using the fingering techniques, however, I will use a pick. Two different sounds...expand your playing, experiment using both..I can actually play with a pick and my fingers simultaneously.
Man, stop this shit! If you want play with Pick, that's OK, it's YOUR choice, if your want to play with your fucking fingers, that's OK too! Goddamn! It's just a matter of choice. I play with both, but I really prefer Pick, I was born playin' bass with pick... Look at all those 80's bass players, most of then used a pick! For God's sake! It's not a fucking rule play with the fingers!!
I don't care what anyone says , DON'T STRUM UP. Playing bass gets you out of your good spot, it teachs you to ajust. Your a guitarist who WANT'S to play bass that's it
@utahpierce Thing is if you say shit like its a fact, you get told back shit like its a fact, face it that you can't be all capslock and bitchy without someone being bitchy right back at you.
That's because it IS a fact. Listen, this guy has talent, but you can ask any of the best bass players (ie. Flea, Wooten, etc.) that strumming up and using a pick it not the way to go.
@utahpierce say that to John Entwistle, the bassist of The Who, one of the best bassplayers in the world, he used a pick from time to time, say it to David Ellefson, the bassist of Megadeth who is sickely good, say it to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, and don't you dare talk shit about Phil, and not to speak of Lemmy from Motörhead..
And there you go. All the aforementioned bass players used their fingers most of the time. So if using a pick IS the way to go, how come it's not their main method of playing? Hmm? Entwistle, Ellefson, Lynott, and Lemmy will tell you EVERY TIME that if your main technique is strumming up and using a pick, you're doing something wrong.
@utahpierce AND a little sidenote, i actually play mostely with my fingers, the only songs i play with a pick are the ones where i need that crunchy, rough tone.
@bonzzo15 Ellefson, Lemmy and Phil ALWAYS used a pick, the only one of those i just wrote who didnt was Entwistle.. I give up this, have fun in your 12 year old little world of immature ideas.
Ellefson, Lemmy and Phil are guitar players in a bass player's body. Flea, Claypool, Gibbs, Wooten, Trujillo, Arvizu; all these bassist primarily used their fingers and the list will go on and on and on. It would take about 20 comment boxes to list HALF of the great bass players that used fingers. The ones that used picks couldn't come even close to an eighth of that number. If that doesn't tell you something then good luck believing the bullshit you do, fuckface.
@OmniTron1000 Well you'd have to ask him but i know tech 21 makes a good bass overdrive. He doesn't have the distortion turned up super high, and he's using a bass with single coils so that might be why yours sounds different.
@xHighPotencyx I'll have to look into this tech 21. I have a Phathead, PD something or other--I havn't played in a while... :\ It's pretty cool, but it's not quite what I'm looking fore...but a nice pedal none the less.
Normally I kinda frown upon playing bass with a pick but A. you pull it off QUITE well and B. I've seen that you also have a damn good finger technique.
im sure jimi wouldve been raw at bass anyways though lol...he didnt even know the chords he was playing on the guitar which means he had like a good ear for music or he was a 'natural' he wouldve probably figured the bass out in like 2 hours
Oh yeahhh I love it, makes you want to walk like some long street, with some badass walking style and flirt with all the ladies you encounter xDDD. Sexy tonee
This reminds me of the sound Hunter Burgan from AFI had on the earlier records, never knew he was using any distortion. Luckily I'm playing through a guitar amp with built in distortion lol.

i mean you like using a lot of effects...... and rock or blues has nothing to do with that...... that music is not from your soul, it's from a circuite...... you play music for robots....
what about everyone who uses an amp? or when u change the tone on your bass? this just makes the music sound better in some cases, its not music for robots you short sighted fool.
a bass cant do every thing a guitar can do and more. thats a really dumb thing to say. a bass can reach deeper octaves that a guitar but it cant reach the high octaves the guitar can reach. both instruments take talent to play but you cant compare them by what they can do its all about who is playing them.
i admire a bassist that can play all styles well. instead of being like "oh no use ur fingers on bass don't use a pick. it's proper to use ur fingers only" blah blah blah
No, Fingers just give a cleaner sound to bass, nothing really changes with the use of a pick, just tone and playing style. And this would be soooo hard on fingers!
Of course it sounds like a lower guitar. That's why it's called a bass, guitar. However, I'd like to see a guitarist play something like this. We've lived under the shadow of guitar forever, But there are only a few people who are really phenomenal at bass, whilst there are thousands of people great at guitar. With bass you need so much more rhythm and skill than with its higher brother.
I primarily play guitar and to be honest, I gotta agree with you there. I play bass too, and even after four years of guitar experience, it was harder than I thought.
you got to the conclusion because he plays with a pick and you "know" everything about the bass so you know it's "supposed" to be played with fingers?
had nothing to do with him playing with a pick, i was refering to his overall style, ive been playing bass for over 25 years. i wasnt taking anything away from him he is a great player.and your use of quotes is superb!

wow Marlowe. Ive never seen you use a pick before!! I've always assumed that anyone who used a pick just did so because they learned guitar first and played it like a "noob" hehe. Does this mean its possible to be a good bassist with a pick? haha
There have been many great bassists who have used picks. Some sounds are impossible to obtain without one. Many songs are more difficult to play with a pick than they are with fingers. When I learn a new Tool song I generally start with my fingers. Then, after Im comfortable playing it, I switch to a pick to obtain that distinctive sound. Assuming that a bassist who plays with a pick cant be extremely talented is profoundly ignorant.
