  • Try playng with youre dick, hurts like hell.

  • Using a pick or your fingers, doesn't matter. Use both, depending on the particular sound you need, or fits. To limit yourself to either, you only tell the world you are not as good as you could be I use what ever feels/sounds right. I use my fingers most of the time, and can actually play faster using the fingering techniques, however, I will use a pick. Two different sounds...expand your playing, experiment using both..I can actually play with a pick and my fingers simultaneously.

  • I play with both fingers and pick, but I prefer fingers as im more skilled with that xd

It doesn't really matter anyway, I use pick for a different tone, its personal preference actually.

  • I only use my fingers for girls

  • By the way, this guy just rocks!

  • Man, stop this shit! If you want play with Pick, that's OK, it's YOUR choice, if your want to play with your fucking fingers, that's OK too! Goddamn! It's just a matter of choice. I play with both, but I really prefer Pick, I was born playin' bass with pick... Look at all those 80's bass players, most of then used a pick! For God's sake! It's not a fucking rule play with the fingers!!

  • this video has inspired me to take up the bass.

  • doo you can give us these awesome tabs ?

  • I don't care what anyone says , DON'T STRUM UP. Playing bass gets you out of your good spot, it teachs you to ajust. Your a guitarist who WANT'S to play bass that's it

  • @utahpierce you just made yourself look like youtubes biggest dumbass.

  • @bonzzo15

    That's subjective.

  • @utahpierce Thing is if you say shit like its a fact, you get told back shit like its a fact, face it that you can't be all capslock and bitchy without someone being bitchy right back at you.

  • @bonzzo15

That's because it IS a fact. Listen, this guy has talent, but you can ask any of the best bass players (ie. Flea, Wooten, etc.) that strumming up and using a pick it not the way to go.

  • @utahpierce say that to John Entwistle, the bassist of The Who, one of the best bassplayers in the world, he used a pick from time to time, say it to David Ellefson, the bassist of Megadeth who is sickely good, say it to Phil Lynott of Thin Lizzy, and don't you dare talk shit about Phil, and not to speak of Lemmy from Motörhead..

  • @bonzzo15

"used a pick from time to time"

And there you go. All the aforementioned bass players used their fingers most of the time. So if using a pick IS the way to go, how come it's not their main method of playing? Hmm? Entwistle, Ellefson, Lynott, and Lemmy will tell you EVERY TIME that if your main technique is strumming up and using a pick, you're doing something wrong.

  • @utahpierce AND a little sidenote, i actually play mostely with my fingers, the only songs i play with a pick are the ones where i need that crunchy, rough tone.

  • @bonzzo15 Ellefson, Lemmy and Phil ALWAYS used a pick, the only one of those i just wrote who didnt was Entwistle.. I give up this, have fun in your 12 year old little world of immature ideas.

  • @bonzzo15

Ellefson, Lemmy and Phil are guitar players in a bass player's body. Flea, Claypool, Gibbs, Wooten, Trujillo, Arvizu; all these bassist primarily used their fingers and the list will go on and on and on. It would take about 20 comment boxes to list HALF of the great bass players that used fingers. The ones that used picks couldn't come even close to an eighth of that number. If that doesn't tell you something then good luck believing the bullshit you do, fuckface.

  • You are an inspiration and I just overdose on your videos and I don't even PLAY!!!

  • tuning?

  • how do you get that sound?? What effects? and strings? I been using Rotosound, and DR strings for quite some time...any suggestions?

  • @OmniTron1000 I think he's just using some kind of overdrive to add some grit to his tone.

  • @xHighPotencyx what kind tho? I have an overdrive, but it doesn't get that kind of sound....

  • @OmniTron1000 Well you'd have to ask him but i know tech 21 makes a good bass overdrive. He doesn't have the distortion turned up super high, and he's using a bass with single coils so that might be why yours sounds different.

  • @xHighPotencyx I'll have to look into this tech 21. I have a Phathead, PD something or other--I havn't played in a while... :\ It's pretty cool, but it's not quite what I'm looking fore...but a nice pedal none the less.

  • Normally I kinda frown upon playing bass with a pick but A. you pull it off QUITE well and B. I've seen that you also have a damn good finger technique.

  • This very unique and cool all at the same bad ass time....

  • That's awesome!

  • Freakin' sweet man!!!! You rock!!!

  • amazing i wish i could play like that

  • What distortion pedal do you use in this video?

  • Can you play some Stevie Ray Vaughan, Johnny Winter etc. style blues solos with these distortion settings on your Rickenbacker?

    It would be GODLY!

  • is thant an Wah?

  • this is awesome thank you!

  • i'd like to see you put together songs with drums and guitar as well, but instead of the guitar being the dominant instrument, the bass is dominant.

  • jazz bass.

  • thanks man... you truly inspire us...

  • @35musthero35 def. a jazz 70's awesome never tire of watching this guy ..he has so many fine basses.

  • thanks dbeater1.. Yepp, this guy's good playing the bass guitar..

  • no thats surely a jazz bass.. -.-

  • great work

  • @jmniland1 nope, jazzbass

  • 5* awsome

  • you my friend are a beast

  • Actually, hendrix did play some bass. If you read his biography, it says that he did play some

  • im sure jimi wouldve been raw at bass anyways though lol...he didnt even know the chords he was playing on the guitar which means he had like a good ear for music or he was a 'natural' he wouldve probably figured the bass out in like 2 hours

  • did i really just hear someone put jimi hendrix style into their bass playing???

    5 stars

  • yes you just did ^^ love it !

  • lets see you play it

  • hmmm i dont think this is just an overdrive :P certainly not an overdrive... its something more ;P

  • fender(jazz in particular) with distortion are so...waw!

  • Oh yeahhh I love it, makes you want to walk like some long street, with some badass walking style and flirt with all the ladies you encounter xDDD. Sexy tonee

  • This reminds me of the sound Hunter Burgan from AFI had on the earlier records, never knew he was using any distortion. Luckily I'm playing through a guitar amp with built in distortion lol.

  • i didnt knew hendrix was still alive and plays bass now:S

  • It was a joke.

  • i play bass and the guys right hendrix didnt play guitar and he is dead, i dont see why everyone gets so upset he didnt play bass, he never did.

  • when we grow in school, there were certain teachers....haha sounds a bit like the hapiest days of our lives/another brick in the wall II

  • Gotta love this.. You're amazin

  • ha ha ha, "likes computers"! More please!

  • what do computers have to do with effects? miri u noob

  • what about everyone who uses an amp? or when u change the tone on your bass? this just makes the music sound better in some cases, its not music for robots you short sighted fool.

  • its a bass guitar isnt it... which means know matter how he plays it it will be bass playing...

  • hahaha

  • Just because you can't play like him, doesn't mean he sucks.

Stop hating on people better than you.

  • one word..brilliant

  • dude that's insane!

  • isanity!

your style in music particularly blues is simply impeccable! "* * * * *"

  • everything you play sounds so proper and perfect

i dunno how you do it

    keep it up dude (Y)

  • that was sick

  • i really am enjoying just about every video I have seen of you in which you are playing a bass guitar!

You are by far the best bass guitar musician on YouTube!

  • Ditto

  • this bass line/solo is AWESOME

  • what pedal are you using?

  • i think its the CRYBABY

  • Comment removed

  • hendrix doesnt play bass. but i get what u mean, he sure is awesome. :D

  • wow very nice :D

  • not the best thing uve done but being a rock bassist I LOVE IT!!!!!!

    peace u crazy mofo

  • that's pretty amazing man.

  • WOW ive never heard that be4 thats awesome!

  • amazing, you play the bass like a guitar and still manage easily to but thoose really nice sounding bass notes in. 5 star man

  • Jason newsted play with pick too

  • where did you learn to play MarloweDK??

did you strat off by getting lessons??

  • thats right! you use a fucking pick!

  • FREAKING AMAZING BASS SOLO!!!!!!!!! I never thought about bass like that! I mostly play guitar, but I self thought myself bass. Rock on!

  • That's amazing! It could be a separate song, even without any guitar!

  • Great man!

  • nice pick playin.

  • thank you for putting up this vid.

you just proved a bass can do what a guitar does and more!(:

  • a bass cant do every thing a guitar can do and more. thats a really dumb thing to say. a bass can reach deeper octaves that a guitar but it cant reach the high octaves the guitar can reach. both instruments take talent to play but you cant compare them by what they can do its all about who is playing them.

  • Comment removed

  • hes right... its like comparing driving a bike and a boat.. 2 different things...

thats why we put them together in a band to get the best of both mate! ;)

  • i admire a bassist that can play all styles well. instead of being like "oh no use ur fingers on bass don't use a pick. it's proper to use ur fingers only" blah blah blah

  • Id love to hear some Hendrix- Band of Gypsies stuff.

  • that was fucking awesome!

  • cool sound bro and nice blues-rock impro too

  • nice i like the distor =]

  • hes playing power chords too, a bit hard to play with fingers

  • bball70.. no it doesn't..... jesus christ, play however the fuck you want, play whatever style you want, play whenever you want & have fun.

  • @Garfield4317 amen brother.

  • No, Fingers just give a cleaner sound to bass, nothing really changes with the use of a pick, just tone and playing style. And this would be soooo hard on fingers!

  • Of course it sounds like a lower guitar. That's why it's called a bass, guitar. However, I'd like to see a guitarist play something like this. We've lived under the shadow of guitar forever, But there are only a few people who are really phenomenal at bass, whilst there are thousands of people great at guitar. With bass you need so much more rhythm and skill than with its higher brother.

  • Amen.

  • I primarily play guitar and to be honest, I gotta agree with you there. I play bass too, and even after four years of guitar experience, it was harder than I thought.

  • granted maybe, but there's is still a lot of characteristics of a bass in that. i'd love to see even the best guitarist do that.

  • yuo are awsome at the bass guitar

  • Sounded like a cross between "I like Rock and Roll" and "Sweet Home Alabama". Nice.

  • a fair bit of castles made of sand influence in there is there? :D

  • :18-:21 is a nice nod to Pink Floyd...was that on purpose?

  • you were a guitar player before a bass player, right?

  • you got to the conclusion because he plays with a pick and you "know" everything about the bass so you know it's "supposed" to be played with fingers?

  • had nothing to do with him playing with a pick, i was refering to his overall style, ive been playing bass for over 25 years. i wasnt taking anything away from him he is a great player.and your use of quotes is superb!

  • ohh, sry then cuz most of people commenting on these videos are bunch of idiots that know nothing about bass and styles so i assumed you're one too :D

  • Jeez calm down, guy didn't even say anything insulting and you jump on his back. Coool dooown!

  • I apologized and we straightened it out...

  • before or after, who knows. But I bet this guy can play a guitar.

  • you are a genie!!!!!the best!!!wouaaaa...

  • Do you know a song that ressemble to this one?

Because I would like to learn it

  • Sick fucking jam man. I'm still practicing. I've never taken any lessons yet but I'm hopin' to be this good.

  • that's some cool riffing. has a nice flowing feel to it.

  • Mum!

  • wah on bass. cool.

  • yeah i play my beringer ultra wah uw300 pedal w/ my p-bass through my dean markley 315b spectra series amp from 1974 (i think) and it is pretty damn funky if ya ask me!

  • they have pedals for that.. or some bass amps have it

  • How did you got it distorted?

Connected it to a guitar amp?

  • bass distorsion pedal !? ;-)

  • Thanks xD

I play guitar and not bass, so I didn't really know they have pedals for basses...

  • no problem ;-)

  • dont ask me why

  • u remind me of ben kenney from incubus

  • i wanna learn between 25 to 31, my favorite part

  • yo i have a fender p bass. how can i get mine to sound that clean? thanks.

  • ...he's playin a j bass...

  • fuzz box? awesome.

  • Hi,one question,can i put lights in my bass?i have an olp mm22,thakns

  • ...Hendrix?

  • sounds like it huh

  • will u join my band?

  • that was tight, i've been watching a few of your videos and you really know the fundamentals of bass playing. kudos

  • Thats a kick ass bass distortion, its got some good tone. What is it?

  • SICK!!!!

  • Your bass can speak ! "WAAAH" ! Not sure what he says though.

  • WTH u rock ! x]

  • Hmm what kind of bass is that looks like a jazz but the burst looks odd from this angle

  • yeah its a jazz

i can tell by the pickguard:D

  • The burt pattern is different. I don't think it's a fender. Or maybe it just has some serious pick scratches, lol.

  • wow Marlowe. Ive never seen you use a pick before!! I've always assumed that anyone who used a pick just did so because they learned guitar first and played it like a "noob" hehe. Does this mean its possible to be a good bassist with a pick? haha

  • Ever heard of Chris Squire, Helmut Hattler or Justin Chancellor?

  • dont leave out Dave Ellefson

  • There have been many great bassists who have used picks. Some sounds are impossible to obtain without one. Many songs are more difficult to play with a pick than they are with fingers. When I learn a new Tool song I generally start with my fingers. Then, after Im comfortable playing it, I switch to a pick to obtain that distinctive sound. Assuming that a bassist who plays with a pick cant be extremely talented is profoundly ignorant.

  • hm... I was kinda kidding, hence the "haha" at the end. I did not mean to give you the impression that I'm "profoundly ignorant."

  • no you werent =) haha

  • fuckin awesome.

  • wtf was that you turned on half way through??????

  • DJDrZoidBerg, that was Wah Wah xD

  • wah

  • sounds like an auto wah

  • You are amazing man. Nice work ;]

  • haha sounded like you through some castles made of sand in there

  • i usually hate distorted bass but that wasnt bad.

  • What is your EQ like for that "song" or what pedal/amp?

  • the ads are coming in the youtube videos!?!?!? whattafukk!??!?!

  • only on partner videos

  • Turn them off then

  • HOLY SHIT!!! that was insane

  • wah wah on bass? xD That sounded amazing man.

  • listen to the beginning solo of N.I.B by Black Sabbath, I think the best wahwah on a bass ever
