@jlong4u You can't control other people's thoughts, minds and religions. The attempt to do so is called Theocracy and is favored by Pat Robertson, Mike Huckabee, and Sarah "Armageddon" Palin, to name a few. Freedom of religion, which by necessity includes freedom from religion, is one of the most fundamental tenets of our Constitution and our break from pre-revolutionary European kings.
God gave choice to Adam and Eve. Who are the Republicans to play God more than God himself did?
@shanana000 Did I say I am a Christian? No, I did not. My religion is not the point. There are two points. One is religion is private, thanks to the Constitution. Two is that you can't control other people's thoughts, at least not in a free society. Even in a monarchy or a totalitarian regime like North Korea, the Soviet Union, or China (politically they're still very repressive), you can only train people not to think and punish them for thinking for themselves.
Perhaps one of the best songs of all time. The messages communicated through rich lyrics will never get old. Roland proved himself a true master with this album, hall of fame is his domain.
If your seeking poweeeeeer!!! its a song that makes me feel im at the end of a movie. Elemental was kind of a suprise to me when it came out. not what i expected but it grew on me then i loved it...
I think the song is him being sarcastic of how people are obsessed by power and its many uses. And how people are sometimes in a constant battle to take power or use power over each other.
"If you take my breath away, the whole damn thing will turn and return redefined rearranged rearranged"--- Sort of like ideas/identity/power/etc., if you steal/take, it's no longer the same it morphs to fit your needs.
"Don't believe that might is right, your soul can turn you just the same"- my fav.
This song is very lyrically rich (even for Roland :P :P) ..this reminds me of something that Curt said back in The Hurting/SFBC eras (not sure.. :P) and he basically said that Roland was less communicative and that he was doing all the interviews.. anyway... this lyric reminds me of that..Roland always said that Elemental was the album that best represented him = showing a human face?? :) also the lyric 'keep the lion in his cage..' = Leo, which Roland is :)
Some of T4F's songs end as others start - has anyone else noticed this? I can't remember exactly but I think as Gas Giants ends, this starts, and as this ends, Fish Out of Water starts. If you set your computer to do a slight fade in between tracks they all run into one another!
Yep. Almost the entire second side (for those old enough to remember Side 1 and Side 2) of 'Songs From The Big Chair' is linked up. 'I Believe' is really the only stand-alone track. 'Head Over Heels' is bookended by 'Broken' and its reprise, then the applause after the reprise fades into the beginning of 'Listen.' 'Hey Andy!' fades into 'Kill Love' fades into 'Snowdrop' on Roland's 'Tomcats...' CD; and, really, the first 'Los Reyes Catolicos' on RATKOS works best as a prelude for 'Sorry.' :)
@SPTSuperSprinter156 This trick is not unique, but at times the fade out / fade in between songs are so perfect that it makes the difference ... Gas Giants is not the best song of TFF, but together with Power it works so well.
All hail Roland (and his son, Raoul). My bucket list includes a session in the studio with you, Mr. Orzabal...perhaps a rocker, or maybe a jazz-fusion improv...you choose. - Gerry in Southern Cal (btw, great show 7/17/09)
The beginning sounds like extra terrestrial communication summoned by the power of the sun somewhere in the cosmos.. sounds weird but thats why I like Rolands music so much he has a thing with ambiance and his ability to sing with so much thunder in his voice amazes me
He is a very dynamic vocalist, according to a You Tuber (that was lucky enough to see them on this years tour),he still has those great souring vocals we all love! And still looks good too. Special man~
I can hear every song.... and I can see in all those songs... a big artists making art.... theyre so brilliant doing what they love... music... I really love all their songs!!!!
This song is a clear indication of how brilliant of an artist Roland Orzabal is! His voice can take you on a journey that transcends mind, body and soul. Thanks for positing Sara.
I am a young black woman and i actually bought it by mistake and ended up loving it and buying all of the TFF albums. My favorites are Head over heals , and sowing the seeds of love .
My nubian princess shares your love of TFF. She said she fell in love with their music she first heard 'Everybody wants to rule the world' as a child. Her favorite TFF song is 'Me and my big ideas'.
I am sure you will yet find many favorite ones to the point that you will be a bit confused :-) Roland Orzabal is capable of unexpected combination of sounds that are mesmerizing. Welcome to his following and enjoy yourself!!!!
@jhyere1 Good music knows no color of skin, sex, creed or religion. Live and love who you are regardless. Listen to what you love regardless. I LOVE all 2 Pac and Biggie to Metallica, Frank Sinatra, Cafe Del Mar, TFF!!! I'm glad you love it, we all should. I am only 22 and grew up to all of this. They say "get in, where you fit in", we all fit in everywhere.... This is AMERICA!
@jhyere1 Also check out 'Woman in Chains' with Oleta Adams. Its a brilliant song too. My all time favorite is 'The Working Hour' from Songs of the Big Chair album.
@jhyere1 cool, the whole sowing the seeds of love album plays in my head im physically from mexico, but borders don,t exist here you know. long live spirit.
I bought Elemental on tape the day it was released. It hasn´t aged a day in 15 years. I almost feel the same emotions as in my first listening, an amazing and rare thing.
Has the main chorus been used in a commercial? It sounds familiar. It'll sound even more familiar when I buy the CD and wear it out like I have ELAHE!!!
Yes. They are and still are. My love affair began with Songs from the Big Chair and goes on today. I saw them in concert in 1990 for the Sowing the Seeds of Love tour. I cried about two musical groups in my life. The day TFF broke up and when Michael Hutchence of INXS died. Check out their music also. Michael and Roland had such a charisma. I wish for the "80's again. Elemental came out post break up. I bought it on the day it was released. It took me a while but I warmed up to it.
You are right. Actually, I also want to buy a CD of 'Elemental'. I have got a cassette tape of the same album. I remember buying it for a very low price, nearly a decade ago, from a record shop in Mumbai, India.
Wow. I haven't listened to this song (or even the CD) since 1994. I gave the CD away to one of my friends because it reminded me of a broken relationship. But this song is absolutely excellent - and I had totally forgotten it. I'll have to buy the CD again.
I too bought it in a "second hand cd store" and that was my second meeting with TFF (first was Songs from... at my dad's vynils). And I met a lot of people when my friends and me went to places in the town and played TFF songs with two guitars. I was only 16...omg that was a great period in my life :D
