Brandon said this song was written for his Uncle Johnny (the same one that did cocaine), who tried to kill himself. The "cut me open," line refers to a shotgun blast intended for his balls, but he missed, hit his leg, and in turn, didn't end up committing suicide. With that story in place, the song's metaphors become clear. I think anybody can relate to the darkness of this song though.
