@weetoy69 Sounds a bit like fear-mongering. If the real debate here was to fight either for energy independence and reduced dependence on foreign energy, then I could understand the position of keeping the coal plants going. Your straw man argument does not fool any of us with half an education.
This is simply a matter of common sense. What has been said makes sense! Ah, but in today's society and especially in Washington, common sense is not common; it is a rare thing.
As rational as this guy may sound you have to remember how flawed his base world view is. 5 minutes after this guy, or his father, took office entire states would be teaching hundreds of thousands of children that 6000 years ago humans were riding dinosaurs.
WOW! What impresses me about Rand is the conviction behind the words. He speaks like a man who was elected to do a job and means to accomplish that job to the best of his ability.
@nelsonbig -- "The Average person reads 250 to 300 words per minute, which is about a page per minute."
I bet it's much less for reading Legalese - maybe even half that rate. And an A4 page can contain 450-500 words, using full margins. So I think your 14.5 hours to read may actually greater than 30 hours for reading and comprehending an 868 page Bill. Then there is the 1000 pages of amendments..... considering a busy schedule, I'd think these guys needs at least two weeks.
Get the federal government out of education... after geting it out of citizens pockets. I mean, if we want the states to regulate education, health care, etc they must regain the power to collect taxes. Some states could opt for more social spending and other states could opt for smaller government and deregulation: it would set up a healthy competition. Low federal taxes (e.g. no federal income taxes) are required for it to happen.
This what a dumb down population does, if they bother to go to the voting booth, they keep re-electing ths same crony politicians back into office. This what kind of crappy bills they force upon the us the people of America. Thank for people like Rand Paul to vote to stop this. We need men and women with principles and common sense to be voting into office and serve the people. Not themselves and their crony corporate and special interest with money.
Overturn the 17th Amendment! Restore the role of U.S. Senators as protectors of their respective states from the U.S. government! That's what Senators are supposed to do & that's what Rand Paul--in his way--is trying to do here. Overturn the 17th Amendment!
RAND PAUL! A chip off the old block! Why on EARTH is he the ONLY one objecting to this horrifying procedure? Nearly 2000 pages of bill and they're supposed to act on it in TWO DAYS and WITHOUT any input from the teachers and the principles? He's right. This is EXACTLY what is wrong with Washington, and he should be praised for the strength of character that allows him to stand up to the rest of these idiots.

Most of Congress really don't know how to read - they CAN'T even follow the constitution which is only like 10 or 20 really small pages...

The Average person reads 250 to 300 words per minute, which is about a page per minute.
868 pages should be given at least 868 minutes (about 14 and a half hours) of full dedication.
Congress passes bill without reading them ALL THE TIME. How do you think TARP and PATRIOT ACT were passed?
This MUST stop. We MUST make Congress work for us again! Remember, they work for YOU!!
