Really interesting story. Makes me think about the nature of thought and how you can forget things for long periods of time but still have them affect you psychologically. I watched this probably two years ago for the first time. A year and a half ago I had to write a short story for school, and I chose to go with something very similar to Stephen King's style. I swear, this story never crossed my mind while I was writing mine, but I still had that same image of a smiling black figure.
Love King's nod to Lovecraft's Cthulu mythos. CTHULU + N= CTHUN. N? Hmm ...a V plus an upside down V connected. V is equal to 6? 66 is the number of fallen angels spoken of in the occult Kaballa? The watchers at the gate? Sorry....couldn't help going OCD after watching this. 8 is great....LOL.
@PublicCommerce His name isn't Stephen N. King, just Stephen King. How have you not heard of him?! He is known as the Master of Horror man. A lot of his books get turned into movies, one that comes to mind is "It" which is terrifying and made me horribly scared of clowns. Watch the trailer. Just type in something like, "Stephen Kings It trailer."
@Jabels86 I wasn't too thrilled about this one, either. I also wasn't toothrilled with the "helmet-head" Cthun in the novella. Oh, well. The point is that it is supposed to be at least a little frightening. :)
thank you very much for posting all these up. it's brilliant. i was hoping for more of a spectacular ending, but the good thing about it is that it does leave no sense of resolution, and questions to be asked.
Wait, I'm confused. Why was it mentioned there were only 2 suicides when there was 3? And isn't charlie the guy who first died? and if it is then who's the blonde man that appears at the end?
@redmangoose182 charlie is the blonde man at the end. the first to commit suicide was N. charlie only mentioned 2 suicides because the to him only 2 were important because he wanted to explore the sibling connection of ocd influenced suicide. the implication is that charlie(who is a doctor also) wants to research this case as a medical case, not a supernatural event.
Thanks for uploading this mini-series. I read 'Just After Sunset' a few weeks ago and 'N' was my favourite story in the anthology. Have to say I prefer the novella's description of the emerging beast. Actually I felt a certain parallel was evident to King's much earlier story 'The Mist', which I read many moons ago. The idea of another world, or dimension, existing just a breath away from our own certainly sends a shiver down the spine!
I read the novell ether! its great!! and listend it on cd read by Katharina Thalbach... its really scaring and reminds me at the novell crouch end... look for the film in the collection Nightmares and dreamscapes! very good and very scaring.. sorry for my bad english... i´m german ;)
coz eight is straight and holds the fate of the world good man thanks but im going to store to compare the difference between the novel and this animation thanks
read the novella, its really good. i think these videos worked more as a visual to the story, but as a stand-alone story it was kind of dry. it makes more sense if you've read the book (which is very very very good :])
yeah that makes sense cuz people who are tempted to go there either tell people about it or they are too naive to not listen to the other peoples warnings
Being naive probably has nothing to do with it. It is human nature to go against the rules, and OCD just amplifies that nature. And according to this story, this form of OCD is passed on to others, amplifying their temptation to go to the field.
I want to read the book now. King has such a way with psychological disorders and the supernatural... it's bound to be interesting.
Though at his level, he could probably make something as banal as constipation sound both frightening and intriguing. It'd be a best-seller in no time.
@RagingAngelKk Speaking of constipation, the story in Just After Sunset about the porta-potty.... *shivers* That scared me. I could imagine that happening and it's just awful.
WHOA....! That was incredible! I've got the goosebumps! The irony of this last episode is just... terrifying. lol. Thank you so much for posting this! Stephen King is brilliant!
i live in maine, right near the field. i drove there yesterday, it's strange but there are rocks like stonehenge. there is a bridge over the Androscoggin too. i wonder if king visited there too. there were 8, and i did not turn to look and double check the rocks. it was dark there, but it was cloudy day. whole summer has been cloudy.
i don't think i will ever go back there again. at least not until the fall. i don't have the urge and don't feel it is necessary yet... things seem ok at the moment.
So how many have commited suicide "please post", i am right now in the phase of touching, staying here in motto in a hotel room, one and half years now, i feel so tired, saving your asses, i have to end it, you mofos stay away from this place, it's a lie, it doesn't exist, stay awwaay
Now, the interesting thing is that after reading this story I started counting and circling and diagonaling. I know it's absurd, my friends and I have all done the same thing and laugh about it, but you have to wonder; did the "infection" pass itself on? DAMN King is a good writer.
Another awesome story from King, gotta wonder where that man gets his stuff. Thanks for uploading it Furikazashi, now I gotta go read the anthology lol
King has a very deranged mind. However, this cannot be held against him, for if he were to visit a psychologist...we would be without good horror books.
Also, I just realized, that last comment makes 81, so this one will make it an even number again... that was close...

not to sound incompetent or anything but was there supposed to be some twist to all of this? Or is it just a supernatural/psychological short?
thanks

Monster design is a bit standard in the animated series. The descriptions in the novella version are much more imaginative and original.

King says it's based less on Lovecraft and more on Arthur Machen's 'The Great God Pan'... which Lovecraft himself was a fan of.
