In a very low scoring game, you can only be denied victory so many times. The draw after a legitimate goal was OK, but this goal (after yet another onside/legitimate goal was denied) brought a nation together to believe that just maybe, after the field of 32, the US can take our mind away from the War's we're in, the tensions in the Korea's, and unite in a team we all believe in.

Poetic justice for the Slovenia game. That game was much more exciting because the comeback was incredible -- from down 2-0 -- and they actually did knock in the winning goal. Unfortunately, though, these refs are terrible. There will always be bad calls, but USA has been robbed on two extremely decisive goals in the last two games. The fact that they were able to come back and tie Slovenia and then knock this one in to win at 91' is awesome. They truly earned their spot in the knock-out round.

I have a theory on why soccer is not that popular in the US. It is because of the draws... but only because they cause teams to not play all out. Football, baseball, hockey... you play to win or go home. Soccer doesn't allow that... you can play defensibly and still come away with a point, which if that's all you need completely ruins the game. Now this one is an exception cause both teams were in a must win situation. Until that's fixed soccer won't be as popular as other American sports.

We're a nation that loves physical games and hard hits, that's why our version of football is our favorite sport. Soccer isn't on that level of physicality and there are players (Ronaldo and all of Italy) who like to dive to draw a penalty if they're merely touched. I hope it catches on though.
