Your lettering looks great, Doug. But in reality, architects/designers/draftsmen rarely used a triangle or straightedge for lettering. Done that way, it would have taken forever to put notes on the drawings. Also, would never have used a felt-tip pen. With the exception of a few who drafted on mylar with erasable ink, hand lettering was almost always done with F lead in a lead holder on velum.
@markhinr wrong. It doesn't take forever. In fact it's quite immediate once you get the hang of it. I lettered like this for at least a decade at a number of offices where it was THE standard. The felt-tip pen is necessary to make the letters legible on video, not because it's best practice. What was typical is ink or plastic on Mylar and pencil on Mylar and vellum.
@howtoarchitect Hi Doug. Yes, now that you explain I can see that you would need to use a felt tip for legibility on the video. It seems our experiences differ. I've been in the business for over 40 years without encountering an architectural office that required anything but freehand lettering. Perhaps the difference is that I've always worked in small firms that designed relatively small buildings? A firm that does urban high rise projects, for example, might have very different standards.
@howtoarchitect Doug you inspire me to become an architect when I grow up. I may only be in middle school but I still appriciate how hard it takes to make these vids and being an architect. If I was learning to become an architect, I'd want you to be my teacher. I am looking foreward to becoming an architect and I know the difficult but I can take a challenge, an "architectual challenge".
Wanna learn how to really write like an architect? Go to college and do the 6 size 3 pages of letters and numbers you have to do during the 1st month, which in fact should be called ''how to write like a computer''.
What is the font of this lettering called?
