It Is Brilliant To See Dusty Happy, Few People Know That Dusty Suffered From Bipolar Disorder. It Took A Hell Of A Lot For Her To Get Motivated And Produce, What I Consider, A Great Hit That Will Never Be Forgotten
I watch Dusty singing as rememberance to my Mum, who passed away November 2011 from Cancer, my Mum loved Dusty's voice, i grew up on Dusty and love her voice also.....I can still see Mum boogie on down to Dusty singing her heart out.....music is great for the soul......makes me happy
dusty springfield what an amazing singer a fantastic voice i remember this comeing out in 1989 as i worked in a bakery that year allways played this on the radio in work dusty u may be gone but your voice is liveing on in my heart. r.i.p to a great legend
My mom was just a couple years younger than Dusty.. Looked a lot like her and had a lot of the same hair, lol. Mom passed in '95, then Dusty a couple years later. They were both way too young to go.....
es increible como esta mujer de los 60 se almodo a la musica de los 80 perfectamente siendo ya una señora, me encanta la gente asi, la admiro muchisimo !
Pet Shop Boys + Dusty Springfield.. Who'd have thought that when Neil was a journalist, Chris an architect and Dusty was conquering America ?.. 3 legends of pop.
Soo very sad , that being gay/lesbian or bi is still so controversial to some primitive people on here , they feel it necessary to bombard the commentry with subliminal hatred.
There's a great NEW book on Dusty: 'The Invention of Dusty Springfield - Scenes From a BritPop Icon'. It's a fun read and a tribute to 'our' Dusty. Available on Amazon.com.
@phyettb A good book on Dusty I recommend "Dancing with Demons" an Authorized Autobiography by Penny Valentine (who also died age 59 Cancer)Journalist/friend of Dusty's inner circle and Vicki Wickham Dusty's Manager/friend . Dusty's bad childhood family/Catholic all girls school boys are evil.Drugs/Booze/smokeing her deep inner pain which caused her to self inflict wounds, in/out of American/England Mental Institutes, all gay relationships ended in Violence! Truly happy singing and performing
Thats because she isnt saying 'in private' there. The line at 3:38 is in public.
The chorus goes -
(and) What you gonna say, in private? You still want my love, were in this together What you gonna do, in public...... Say you were never in love, that you cant remember :)
went 2 see pet shop boys live last tour they featured what have i done to deserve this! with dusty video singin her parts!! best bit of show!! pet shop boys loved her
One of my favorite songs from the eighties.....perfect combination ç Dusty and Pet Shop Boys...MORE FANTASTIC ´80´s music at my channel!!!! Take a look...
This whole thing sucks. I love Dusty Springfield and I'd argue she is the best White Soul singer of all time. And God bless the Pet Shop Boys for kicking her some work at a time when no one cared. But this song sucks. It sounds like all those has-beens that kicked out Disco songs trying to be "relevant". (The one exception is Cher's "Take Me Home", go figure.) I wish she lived a little longer. Imagine what the Propellerheads would have done with her.
@desert3347 Thanx a lot for your clear explanation, Desert. I never saw Dusty in the 60's but, at any rate, it was the 60's and this was the 80's. Was it the same thing? One thing is for sure, though, make-up or not, Dusty Springfield was a superb singer and she is really missed
@shark1305 We Saw Dusty Once In LA in the late 60's, Sexy As Hell, Beautiful voice & Arm Movements, then She vanished! Lots of Personal Problems after Reading About Her. Her Trade Make was Her Dark Eye Makeup against that Blond Hair. The Ronnettes makeup was even more EXTREAM and who the hell didn't love & Want to Look Like Them!! Tnkx for Your comment Shark!.
@thepeacefulpoet I Agree With You, God How We All Miss Dusty. The Time Has Flown And We All Still Listen To Her Music. She'll Always Be Alive, Won't She.
great song. great thing that the PSB hooked up with her during the late 1980s. PSB should have done a follow album with her instead of doing what they did after their 1988 release.
Right two things. First Im a straight guy and I find something about Dusty very attractive. She isn't coventionally goodlooking but she is very sexy. Secondly and most importantly she was an amazing artist. One of my favourite singers of all time. When in full attack - proper give it some welly- mode, Dusty could belt out a voice that would give Aretha a good run for her money. Shame then that she is remembered for safe vocal range performances like this, but even still I love this song.
What is "coventionally goodlooking" My God she is maybe the most beautiful MOMAN to ever Walk, Talk, Sing and Live this dreadful Earh we live on. I started following her 30 years ago.
@firefighterno1 I am entirely relieved to read a comment that so perfectly mirrors my own sentiments about Dusty - being a heterosexual woman, I don't find her sexually attractive, but her voice is the embodiment of arousal. I love the material she recorded with the Pet Shop Boys. I've always applauded them for demonstrating such good taste. And I appluad you too.
@firefighterno1 Dusty Springfield was conventionally good-looking when young. I'd like to see her looks yearly from the late 1950's to the 1990's. Certainly she promoted a revolution in her hair. She's an intringuing character. For sometime there was talk of Ang Lee making a film on Springfield. Too bad it didn't come to fruition.
Dusty – aka Mary O’Brien, from Dublin – came to terms with her lesbianism when she was a teenager. She never pretended to be otherwise, and for this she is due huge credit. Similarly, she was banned from South Africa in the 1960s when she protested about black musicians in her band not being allowed to stay in her hotel. She cancelled the tour. Dusty wasn’t a political person – she was just a very beautiful human being who, with the innocence of a child, simply could not understand prejudice.
I, like others didn't know about this newer music of hers. I have many 45"s from the "sisties" that she did. OMG I love this song!! Was she bi-sexual? That's OK.
@RImusclebear My God, why didn't I know. One of my friends in High School was bi-sexual & has been with her life partner,a woman, for years. Now as I look back over Dustys life, there wasn't many men, if any! Too bad she wasn't able to share that with many people. Just look at all the Lesbian women, broad caster, hosts, singers open with their gender preference! This knowledge just makes me love her more!
@Ilvcamusic You have to remember the times our beloved Dusty (Katherine) lived in. Not good for a female singer to be known as a lesbian! Sad but I really think Dusty was very happy with her beautiful girlfriend! When Dusty passed it was reported a large female contingency mourned her passing.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
In short...................America doesn't rule the World as far as music is concerned. British music is, and always will be, far superior. What does America have to offer as far as the 60's goes? Not a lot, well, there's always Vietnam!
@auntytilly you frigging limey snob. There were alot of great singers and groups in the sixties in America just as there were in every country. Good thing everybody in your country doesn't have the ego you do otherwise you'd have a country full of nothing but hot air.
@auntytilly I Love British Music, but excuse ME! You need an Education! Freda Payne, Aretha Franklin, Darlene Love, The Ronnettes, Crystals, Beach Boys, Paris Sisters, Kathy Young, Liza Minnelli! Shaka, Temptations, Stylistics, Smoky! Should I go on You Dumb Bell!
@dandyboy1 I always thought of this song and video as homoerotic. I wonder if Dusty was coming to terms with her lesbianism when she recorded this? Great song!
Dusty had several major hits the world over, although much is forgotten since her passing and, of course, generations who grew up without knowing her. How quickly people forget! She is and was always one of the greatest performers of history.
it may be a lesbian video today but did anyone think this video had lesbian themes contained in it during 1988? i doubt it. i doubt anyone thought anything other than it was a good song except radio programmers who might not have played it because they knew she was a lesbian but you can't bet they played r&b black shit music.
why do lesbians think black people are their friends? they burn lesbians alive in africa.
@clazza01 Dusty is absolutely GORGEOUS! Anybody who tells you Dusty was ugly is just plain ignorant! As a gay man I have always loved Dusty and always will!
O.K. I'll settle this discussion on whether she was famous or not. Picture a 13 yr. old Mishawaka, IN, U.S. girl glued to her little blue transister radio to try and catch another h-e-a-r-t breaking song sung in this lovely, clear yet smokey voice by this stylish looking soulful british singer, named Dusty Springfield. Even her name was cool! She was played right along with all of new and hottest Motown soul singers and west coast rock. And her songs & style of singing-still untouchable.
@boomer1954ful i agree with your comments i was born in 1970 but brought up listening to 50's/ 60's stuff my dad was a massive dusty fan..she never got the full recognition here in the uk for here later releases ie the dusty nashville album ( one of my all time fave tracks is son of a preacher man!) and and as you say she was the british answer to a soul / motown singer
@boomer1954ful The Mowton Artists did not christen her the First White Lady of Soul for nothing. Dusty was the most talented and iconic British female singer of the 2nd half of the 20th Century.
I remember like it was yesterday hearing her singing great songs that were part of a wonderful period in my life. I was 18yrs old and in the big city for the first time. I heard "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me" and was in love with her and with life immediately. She was a class act all the way. Yeah she had some sordid aspects to her life but maybe we all do except no one is interested in ours .... She was nothing short of brilliant. I miss her so much.
Irregardless of how we feel about whether or not she was famous or not, her music will live on, long after we are all gone. New generations will discover just what a talent, what a star, what an immensely gifted performer she is. How fortunate we are to have her music. thank you Ms. Springfield!
What a voice, and what a class act she was. Another great artist who left us much too soon. No matter how lousy I feel, I just hit the Play button on a Dusty song, and I instantly feel better.
With respect to the comments about her popularity in America - Most Americans recognize her music but do not know the personality that is Dusty Springfield. I honestly thought she was a black chick until Youtube. The fact that she's an English blonde makes her all the more fascinating.
@jilhal24- I do think you're right, although folks in the US who were around in the 60's do remember more than just the music (she did alot of TV at the time, Ed Sullivan, Hollywood Palace, Hullabaloo, Andy Williams, etc- my mother remembers the big blonde hair and heavy eye makeup), but it was in the UK- where she had her own TV show, multiple specials, and was a fixture on Ready, Steady Go- that she is viewed as an icon. But as you alluded in your comment, she really was one of a kind. ;)
when her voice is active.....im excited

ESPECIALLY WHEN REAL ARTIST'S CAN DO IT, AND KILL YOU, WITH THEIR POETIC LAMENTS & AMAZING SOUNDS.
I'M 30 YEARS YOUNG THIS JULY...(TIME FLIES)
AND I LISTEN TO MUSIC AROUND AND ABOUT...
BUT THATS ALL I CAN DO, IS LISTEN...
BECAUSE THERE'S NOTHIN TO HEAR ?
IT'S ALL SOULESS, DISPOSABLE RUBBISH.

@shark1305 If You Ever Saw Dusty In The 60's, Her Eye Make Up Was Very Extream & Very

Possibly "The Pet Shop Boys" Encouragered "Dusty" To Look That Way.

In short...................America doesn't rule the World as far as music is concerned. British music is, and always will be, far superior. What does America have to offer as far as the 60's goes? Not a lot, well, there's always Vietnam!
auntytilly 1 year ago
@auntytilly you frigging limey snob. There were alot of great singers and groups in the sixties in America just as there were in every country. Good thing everybody in your country doesn't have the ego you do otherwise you'd have a country full of nothing but hot air.
lasktguy 1 year ago
@auntytilly I Love British Music, but excuse ME! You need an Education! Freda Payne, Aretha Franklin, Darlene Love, The Ronnettes, Crystals, Beach Boys, Paris Sisters, Kathy Young, Liza Minnelli! Shaka, Temptations, Stylistics, Smoky! Should I go on You Dumb Bell!

dandyboy1 1 year ago
@dandyboy1 I always thought of this song and video as homoerotic. I wonder if Dusty was coming to terms with her lesbianism when she recorded this? Great song!
RImusclebear 1 year ago
Dusty had several major hits the world over, although much is forgotten since her passing and, of course, generations who grew up without knowing her. How quickly people forget! She is and was always one of the greatest performers of history.

what I like about this video is it is overtly lesbian and dusty was a lesbian so it is perfect. RIP my lovely Dusty. Your fans miss you so!
RImusclebear 1 year ago
@RImusclebear
it may be a lesbian video today but did anyone think this video had lesbian themes contained in it during 1988? i doubt it. i doubt anyone thought anything other than it was a good song except radio programmers who might not have played it because they knew she was a lesbian but you can't bet they played r&b black shit music.
why do lesbians think black people are their friends? they burn lesbians alive in africa.

I'm surprised the Pet Shop Boys wrote this one, it doesn't have the typical PSB sound/vibe. It sounds more like a Bee Gees song...

And her songs & style of singing-still untouchable.
boomer1954ful 1 year ago 20
@boomer1954ful and so say all of us, she was lovely, god rest her soul
daddygab 1 year ago
@boomer1954ful i agree with your comments i was born in 1970 but brought up listening to 50's/ 60's stuff my dad was a massive dusty fan..she never got the full recognition here in the uk for here later releases ie the dusty nashville album ( one of my all time fave tracks is son of a preacher man!) and and as you say she was the british answer to a soul / motown singer
dizzydevil547 1 year ago
@boomer1954ful Yep, you are a Dusty fan. Most gay guys and gals related to her in our youth! Many straight people did as well
RImusclebear 1 year ago

I miss her so much.
willie12451 1 year ago
Irregardless of how we feel about whether or not she was famous or not, her music will live on, long after we are all gone. New generations will discover just what a talent, what a star, what an immensely gifted performer she is. How fortunate we are to have her music. thank you Ms. Springfield!
grooverunner 1 year ago
What a voice, and what a class act she was. Another great artist who left us much too soon. No matter how lousy I feel, I just hit the Play button on a Dusty song, and I instantly feel better.

With respect to the comments about her popularity in America - Most Americans recognize her music but do not know the personality that is Dusty Springfield. I honestly thought she was a black chick until Youtube. The fact that she's an English blonde makes her all the more fascinating.
jilhal24 1 year ago
@jilhal24- I do think you're right, although folks in the US who were around in the 60's do remember more than just the music (she did alot of TV at the time, Ed Sullivan, Hollywood Palace, Hullabaloo, Andy Williams, etc- my mother remembers the big blonde hair and heavy eye makeup), but it was in the UK- where she had her own TV show, multiple specials, and was a fixture on Ready, Steady Go- that she is viewed as an icon. But as you alluded in your comment, she really was one of a kind. ;)

@mnmcv1 you have to see how she was portrayed on American Dreams. It's both disgusting and shameful. watch?v=TBlI55laOvs
