This is the closest I have seen so far to what we called Kanshiwa Bunkai, as practiced in our dojo.
You had the kata of same name, and then this exercise with one student standing in the middle of the rest (10 to 20 depending on how many came to class)
the circled students were quickly given a numbers by the sensei, the student in the center took his/her stance, sensei called random numbers so the central student would have to respond one at a time to various attacks from any direction.
