I never remember Maggie winning a fight, but he always seemed to pick a fight with the best player on the opposing team for the sole purpose of getting that guy off the ice for five minutes.
Maggie won many fights, never backed down from anyone. he lost his fair share, the difference is he was all heart and always stood up for his teammates. All star, captain and coach for the hawks. His number was retired. That is more than i can say for the so called enforcers of the era.
Bobby Orr was a pure artist on skates. He was the total hockey player. If I was starting a team, I would take Orr first in any era, even if it meant for just the eight years his career went. It was pure camelot in Boston when the great Bobby skated in Boston Garden. He left everyone in awe, even his opponents plus he was as tough as nails. Pure magic.
Absolutely, number 4 never bunny-sucked the way others did to get their high scores. Yes, Orr was the consumate player, offense and defense, and didn't take any sh*t from anybody, as this clip confirms. Orr had the +- on everyone. He was the greatest hockey player ever. If you score more goals than you give up, your the best. If you ever saw him play vs anyone else you could see there was no contest. Cam Neeley was not far behind himself, he controlled the game and was faster than any player of his day.

I agree that Gordie wasn't better than Orr but give credit where credit is due. Howe played in a different era, remember NO ONE scored more than 100 points until '68 when Howe was 40, so the fact Howe actually achieved 100 points even once is incredible. Then remember Howe also managed to lead the league in scoring 6 times and also won the Hart 6 times, second only to Gretzky. He had both a brilliant and long career.

Maggie won many fights, never backed down from anyone. he lost his fair share, the difference is he was all heart and always stood up for his teammates. All star, captain and coach for the hawks. His number was retired. That is more than i can say for the so called enforcers of the era.

Bobby Orr was a pure artist on skates. He was the total hockey player. If I was starting a team, I would take Orr first in any era, even if it meant for just the eight years his career went. It was pure camelot in Boston when the great Bobby skated in Boston Garden. He left everyone in awe, even his opponents plus he was as tough as nails. Pure magic.

Absolutely, number 4 never bunny-sucked the way others did to get their high scores. Yes, Orr was the consumate player, offense and defense, and didn't take any sh*t from anybody, as this clip confirms. As for Neeley's generation, one can only imagine the numbers he would've wound up with had Samuelsson not pulled his cheap shot - say that name in Boston today and any true hockey fan will still get pissed and growl! Still, Bobby is the standard and I'm grateful to have seen him play.

Orr had the +- on everyone. He was the greatest hockey player ever. If you score more goals than you give up, your the best. If you ever saw him play vs anyone else you could see there was no contest. Cam Neeley was not far behind himself, he controlled the game and was faster than any player of his day.

Gordy was one of the best, he was that good, I forget his records but they were good ones, I just would objct to calling Bobby a showboat, if you know he played shinny growing up it was a game of keep away on the pond and that is all he was doing on the ice. He played shinny all through parctice too, it was hilarious no one else could get the puck.
The real problem her is that Howe never got paid like he deserved because of Eagleson. That is the real problem.

Gordie wasnt the best. He just a LONG career and consistently put up 30 goals a year. He only hit the 100 point mark twice. Orr had 102 assists one year

I agree that Gordie wasn't better than Orr but give credit where credit is due. Howe played in a different era, remember NO ONE scored more than 100 points until '68 when Howe was 40, so the fact Howe actually achieved 100 points even once is incredible. Then remember Howe also managed to lead the league in scoring 6 times and also won the Hart 6 times, second only to Gretzky. He had both a brilliant and long career.

What Orr did while basically playing on only 1 good knee after just a few seasons in insane!!! If he wouldn't have had the knee problems, he probably would be known as the greatest ever without any argument, and that isn't meant to take anything away from the great one.

WAYNE Gretzky had seven seasons when his +/- was NEGATIVE. Per game, Orr's was literally 3x that of Gretzky's. Orr's was over +1 per game (records weren't kept his first season) and Gretzky's is in the +.30's

Well if you are going to look at the numbers honestly. Gretzky's professional career spanned 20 years, twice that of Bobby Orr. I am not looking for an arguement, as they are probably my two favorite players of all time. Numbers can say whatever you want them to say when taken out of context. Numbers will never show how great Orr was and how he revolutionized the the blueline.

Terrible to the point that they let Bernie Nichols take defensive zone faceoffs. For a couple of years he was totally removed from the pk..and anytime he ended up on the ice..we would all hold our breath and hope for the puck to be cleared..simply brutal in his own end without help on the boards!! I watched more than a dozen games live and hundreds on tv..awful D. If you subtract out the pp #'s Gretzky ran neg #'s half his career, 7 years had a - +/- and has the NHL record 2285 ga while on ice

He clocked him a bunch of times before the referee save Magnusens' life but Orr wasn't quite finished yet. He gave that looser a few more smacks for good measure.

nah, orr, if made a forward would EASILY out-do wayne's stats. if in the HYPER strong league of 70-71 Orr could make 102 assists, think of how degraded gretzky's 163 look in a league where even grant furher, a goalie, had points.
orr was better defensively, better offensively, more important to his team, (or the canadian national team), there is simply no comparison.

Bobby was revolutionary, we cant take that away from him. But he did come along at a time when NHLers didnt really train that hard and most were pretty much out of shape... few goalies wore masks , the players were smallish by todays standards and they didnt hit very hard, they skated really slow.

I mean, no disrespect to Gordie Howe, but he was the fighting champ of the NHL from 1954 until he retires for chrissakes, how tough a league was that? If you look at a "greatest plays" compilation of Bobby orr, the guys he plays against are REALLY slow. As for being a "HYPER" strong league...I think the USSR dispelled that belief in 1972. . Had Orr played in the 80s and 90s....yeah...maybe 150-160 assists. But had Gretzky played in Orrs era, he probably would have had 200 assists.

Early in the 70's, Pat Quinn knocked Orr out cold with a blindside check. Gretzky, the so-called "greatest player ever" had a +/- below zero SEVEN times in his career. He was great offensively, but a lousy defensive player. He was thoroughly incapable of playing any sort of physical game. Guys like Howe, Lindsay and Richard would have chewed him up and spit him out in the 50s, when there were no "enforcers" to protect the weak. Back then, you fought your own battles. If you couldn't, you were gone. Orr would dominate any era. Unlike #99, he could play it any way.

No one can deny that Gretzky was an offensive genius. But he had the luxury of being the most protected player ever. He operated in a "cocoon." Compare him to other superstars. Orr retired a cripple. Howe's face took over 500 stitches. Hull looked like a model when he broke in, but ended up looking like Frankenstein. Gretzky retired with barely a mark on him. How? He avoided contact, didn't backcheck, block shots, dish out hits, or protect his teammates. He's the best one-way player in history.
