Ganassi cars were running high gears for fuel conservation. As long as they were out front they were good and they got out of the pits faster because they were using less fuel so less filling time. I was on pit lane after the race and saw the fuel levels in the tanks. Montoya used only about 2/3 the fuel Buddy did and that was why Buddy lost 4 spots every stop. Buddy turned fastest lap of the race, but never could close in the second half of the race because of the slow stops.
The action behind Montoya was great - Lazier went at it all day with the Foyt cars (Salazar & Ward), Cheever, Robby Gordon, and Vasser. Montoya stunk up a good race that year
