I feel bad for the pet owner's family but most of the thinking world would not let beloved family pets run loose. If that county does not have a leash law for dogs, a responsible pet owner would keep them safe regardless. This looks to be the fault of the owner and he should bear the responsibility. That's a big problem these days - people impose on others, get burned and then blame someone else. The owner should keep future pets in a safe place.
@sgayres The dogs lived on 75 acres in the country and were across the road from the man's house that shot them. He shot them from a little over 100 feet. They were no danger to him or his chickens. These dogs had ran out the door past my friend and yes he didn't go after them and yes he knows that he should have. He has told me so. He feels very bad about that. But to shot these dog on "Christmas" was just doing something mean, because the man could.
State Police investigated...they say by Kentucky law this killing SOB goes free with nothing, no ticket, no fines no jail....nothing. See in Kentucky if a animal is on your property you can kill it. Dolly was in the road but we have no witnesses so they won't do anything. its a sad day for the law in the United States and people of Kentucky should be ashamed of themselves its 2012....time to change this law Kentucky.

@patricia42256 The guy that owns the dogs is my friend. Has been since we were in the fourth grade. Not the guy that did the shooting. I feel a lot of his pain. I just don't understand him at all. But some people don't put a value animals of any kind unless they are going to make money off them.

@Jesseleeg The dogs had tags on with the Walkers number on them. The dogs were not mean and if called nicely he could have grabbed one and got the number and called. I have done this myself with a few dogs were I live. I just talk nice and they come most of the time. I live outside of Lansing MI in a small subdivision in the country with two very busy roads on two sides. So I try to catch them, check for tags then chain them up in front yard. This way the owner finds them alive.

@Jesseleeg I had one die a few years back and could not believe how much it hurt. He died in front of me and later I was mad at myself for not doing hands only CPR. His heart had just stopped. I am trained in CPR for people and would do it in a heart beat, but I panicked with him dieing in front of my wife and children. I don't know if it would have made any difference but would have felt better for trying. Thanks for your thoughts.

Something like this happened to my family when my son was little. The dog warden didn't even ask about the dog or approach the dog to see if it was vicious...he just got out of his car and shot the dog dead...right in front of my son.

I am so so sorry. Unfortunatly if they were off your property (which is only what i am assuming) you cannot really control what was done. If he shot them on your property then there should be something you can do. Regardless, if they wern't harming any animals there are other non-violent ways to scare dogs off. My dog, was hit by a car April 2011, It was my fault for having him off lead. He diddn't stop.. I have to live with that choice forever, and its a terrible one....:"( So so sorry...

My "neighbor" shot my two German Shepherds, littermates, 4 yrs. old ... one dieing in my arms. He shot my house and almost shot me. The sheriff deputy REFUSED to even come out. They couldn't be torn away from their Sunday football playoff game ........ when they came out 3 days later they did NOTHING. There were two laws applicable and they REFUSED to even enforce those ........ my heart aches for this family .... I KNOW their pain...I pray they get justice

They just see an animal not something that someone has raised with love and care. I am a hunter and my friend hunts a lot. He was a marksman level shooter in the army and has in the National Guard for years. We did our shooting with open sights mostly. But doing in a deer, a coyote, a raccoon or a wild bird is different than a pet.

i know of another case like this. womans dog got into a chicken pen and killed 10-15 chickens. got shot with a 12 ga. long story short the dog owner had to pay to replace the chickens and repair the pen.

But I like the invisible fencing for dogs, It works and can give the dogs lot's of room to run. My friend learned a big costly lesion here. He wishes someone would have just contacted him. I live in Hancock county you guys should have kept your dogs on a leash in your yard or in your own yard. They came into his yard killed his chickens more than once it became his right to kill those dogs. I personally love animals and dogs are my favorite animals but I don't feel sorry for you guys, it's your own fault that your dogs were kill you should have kept them in your yard.

@MichiganRay If there was damages they should have been brought forth. With the way investigations are done today the officer would have and should have taken photos if there had been any. He didn't. He didn't even take pics of the blood trail from were the one dog dragged it's self after the first shot. They would have shown it starting well away from Pates's property.

The owner was warned & advised to keep them up. The previous dog warden even stated on here he called them asking them to do their job but it seems they are to blame as much as the owner. I just left a message on the machine for Lewisport Police Dept. I urge everyone who finds this appalling to do the same. 270-295-6188... I told them it was a disgrace that this man murdered these dogs without justification and should have called animal control to handle the situation. They had ID tags and could have easily been returned to the owners, and the owners reprimanded for letting the dogs run loose. Keith Pate is a murderer and I firmly believe he poses a threat to the community.

Clearly the laws in KY need to be changed. There were so many different ways this could have been resolved that would not have ended with the senseless deaths of these to dogs. Keith Pate clearly hates dogs and has the state to back him up.

He told me everything that had gone down right then and we have talked several times since. I have known him since 1967. He told me were the blood trail started and were he found the dogs. They were not on Pate property.

So I assume you are not willing to reimburse Mr. Pate the damage done by your animals? Your dogs have been wandering everyone's yards for quite a while now. The law is quite clear - if a dog is in your yard, you have the right to shoot it. If your dogs were in my yard and killing my raised chickens I would not hesitate to do the same thing.
The problem is not Mr. Pate, nor the dogs, but that of irresponsible owners.
@MichiganRay If the dogs were a problem all anyone had to do was let John Know. No one ever had said a word ever. There also was no reasion for Mr Pate to point the same rifle at John when he was trying to find out were the other dog was that was not in the road.

I feel bad for the pet owner's family but most of the thinking world would not let beloved family pets run loose. If that county does not have a leash law for dogs, a responsible pet owner would keep them safe regardless. This looks to be the fault of the owner and he should bear the responsibility. That's a big problem these days - people impose on others, get burned and then blame someone else. The owner should keep future pets in a safe place.

@sgayres The dogs lived on 75 acres in the country and were across the road from the man's house that shot them. He shot them from a little over 100 feet. They were no danger to him or his chickens. These dogs had ran out the door past my friend and yes he didn't go after them and yes he knows that he should have. He has told me so. He feels very bad about that. But to shot these dog on "Christmas" was just doing something mean, because the man could.

State Police investigated...they say by Kentucky law this killing SOB goes free with nothing, no ticket, no fines no jail....nothing. See in Kentucky if a animal is on your property you can kill it. @Jesseleeg The dogs had tags on with the Walkers number on them. The dogs were not mean and if called nicely he could have grabbed one and got the number and called. I have done this myself with a few dogs were I live. I just talk nice and they come most of the time. I live outside of Lansing MI in a small subdivision in the country with two very busy roads on two sides. So I try to catch them, check for tags then chain them up in front yard. This way the owner finds them alive.

@Jesseleeg I had one die a few years back and could not believe how much it hurt. He died in front of me and later I was mad at myself for not doing hands only CPR. His heart had just stopped. I am trained in CPR for people and would do it in a heart beat, but I panicked with him dieing in front of my wife and children. I don't know if it would have made any difference but would have felt better for trying. Thanks for your thoughts.

I am so so sorry. Unfortunatly if they were off your property (which is only what i am assuming) you cannot really control what was done. If he shot them on your property then there should be something you can do. Regardless, if they wern't harming any animals there are other non-violent ways to scare dogs off. My "neighbor" shot my two German Shepherds, littermates, 4 yrs. old ... one dieing in my arms. He shot my house and almost shot me. The sheriff deputy REFUSED to even come out. They couldn't be torn away from their Sunday football playoff game ........ when they came out 3 days later they did NOTHING. They just see an animal not something that someone has raised with love and care. I am a hunter and my friend hunts a lot. He was a marksman level shooter in the army and has in the National Guard for years. We did our shooting with open sights mostly. But doing in a deer, a coyote, a raccoon or a wild bird is different than a pet.

i know of another case like this. womans dog got into a chicken pen and killed 10-15 chickens. got shot with a 12 ga. long story short the dog owner had to pay to replace the chickens and repair the pen.

But I like the invisible fencing for dogs, It works and can give the dogs lot's of room to run. My friend learned a big costly lesion here. He wishes someone would have just contacted him. He didn't even take pics of the blood trail from were the one dog dragged it's self after the first shot. They would have shown it starting well away from Pates's property.

The owner was warned & advised to keep them up. The previous dog warden even stated on here he called them asking them to do their job but it seems they are to blame as much as the owner. He warned he would have to take matters into his own hands if they didn't , so he tried to keep this from happening. Most of you condemning the shooter would have done the same. They are made to keep your pets in the yard to keep things like this from happening. If the dogs ran out of the garage as he said the fence could have stopped them. I cannot even begin to imagine how I'd feel if someone murdered my dogs this way. As hard as it must have been I'm glad you had the presence of mind to record the evidence because this is nothing short of evil and it is unacceptable that the police brushed it off. I am SO sorry for your loss, your dogs were absolutely beautiful. I don't care if the dogs were on his table eating his Christmas dinner--there is NO excuse to butcher a dog this way.

I just left a message on the machine for Lewisport Police Dept. I urge everyone who finds this appalling to do the same. 270-295-6188... I told them it was a disgrace that this man murdered these dogs without justification and should have called animal control to handle the situation. They had ID tags and could have easily been returned to the owners, and the owners reprimanded for letting the dogs run loose. Keith Pate is a murderer and I firmly believe he poses a threat to the community.

@perryswife5 No dead chicken were shown the the Sharif or John on that day. The only time Pate has dead chickens is when someone runs them over with their car. John has stopped many times to wait for those birds to leave the road. Others have not.

Also, from googling "Keith Pate Lewisport", the top link is a Craigslist post where the person says Pate killed other dogs but the dogs are NOT on his property necessarily. Meaning, anyone can kill those chickens, cause of bird flu dangers and terrorism.
Plus it gives the guys address area to avoid, State hwy 657 and Poplar Grove road, 1/2 mi south of the 4way stop in Lewisport.

Sure, it's horrible to have to come away from family to look over something so sad, but, in this case he was just annoyed and plain rude about/towards it. This is just a disgrace. Those poor dogs... He told me everything that had gone down right then and we have talked several times since. I have known him since 1967. He told me were the blood trail started and were he found the dogs. They were not on Pate property.

So I assume you are not willing to reimburse Mr. Pate the damage done by your animals? Your dogs have been wandering everyone's yards for quite a while now. The law is quite clear - if a dog is in your yard, you have the right to shoot it. If your dogs were in my yard and killing my raised chickens I would not hesitate to do the same thing.
The problem is not Mr. Pate, nor the dogs, but that of irresponsible owners.
