It completely buffles me why the "extra" elephants are being "culled" when they can be easily given away to faraway countries, as precious gifts... whatever country that is willing to create safe places like sanctuaries, NOT ZOOS, for such majestic creatures. This will safeguard the GENETIC pool of future elephants. Killing elephants in Africa, when they become "extra" does not allow for genetic diversity to grow; it actually shrink elephants gene pool, even if the population there grows a bit.
