Pyramid Head was an executioner during the Age of Our Founding Fathers in this ghost town (literally a ghost town), an executioner of the guilty at least.

@tahthedon Silent Hill makes you go there basing on your past and sins. I wouldn't say that you would be stuck if not completing it, seeing that it is an alternative reality. But you would probably die and by dying in Silent Hill you die in the "real world" too. Don't be confused with the movie, the movie Silent Hill was very different from Silent Hill the game itself... One of the reasons I didn't even like the movie.

Pyramid head was in Silent Hill 2 as a way to symbolize James's need for self punishment. James's guilt is ever present in all aspects in SH2 if one looks closely enough throughout the game

@smashexpert76 for example,one could argue in an equally fair manner that the Nurses appearances in SH: Origins for Travis somewhat may represent his abusive childhood where no one loved him and his mom tried killing him.In that sense,the Nurse's meaning here maybe for Travis acts as the motherly caring figure that he wanted to have as a child instead of his psycho non-caring murderous mom.(remember the dude's dad even killed himself) so Travis had no caring figure in his life at all:)

I have a theory as to why Pyramid Head is in this one, other than being mere fan base. I think the Pyramid Head in this game is always there, just in the back ground of the story. You can always see traces of his presence throughout the game, such as the swarm. But i think PH is feeding of Alex's fathers guilt much as he did with James in SH2. I think that's why PH just leaves Alex alone. Since PH is technically his father, he won't hurt him.

Well to my understanding pyramid head represents punishment/guilt. and from what I've read, that helmet he wears is supposedly extremely painful to wear - like an eternal burden he bears. A lot of things in Silent Hill are just there for the sake of being there, providing mostly symbolic purposes.

However, I assume the reason he doesn't take it off is because it's bound to him as punishment. In silent hill 2, where we first see Pyramid Head, he always gives these painful sighs and grunts, an indication to me that the helmet is bound to him as punishment for a reason we do not know.

He is a manifestation of James's (the main character of the second silent hill) guilt. During the gameplay of the second one you encounter a painting that depicts Pyramid Head as an executioner. Many believe that this was a painting he saw early in his life and his sub conscious depicts PH in that very way.

Silent Hill 2 - Pyramid Head (although if i'm not mistaken, it never actually says it in the game - this could be just a name coined by fans - i'm really not too sure to be honest) In Silent Hill: Homecoming he is referred to as "The Bogeyman". In Silent hill The Movie, he is, or so ive been told, called "red pyramid".
