  • ready to see brady hoke get michigan to its next rose bowl

  • This was a great week for me. I went to my first Detroit Red Wings game in which they won vs St. Louis the night before. Then watched Michigan win this game

  • Michigan had funny looking jerseys

  • Damn forgot it was against Leaf lol

  • Woodson's nameplate on the home jersey was really off-center for a majority of that season, its always bothered me.

  • The interception by Woodson with the Cougars ahead 7-0 was the critical play for Michigan in this game. If the Cougs had scored to go ahead 14-0, it is unlikely that MIchigan could have come back. It was a fantastic game between two outstanding teams.

  • Leaf's dropback here looks very awkward lol.

  • WOODSON IS THAT DUDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Not sure what the theme at 1:55 is called, but it was also used during the Rocky-Drago fight in Rocky IV. Absolutely the perfect song for the Rose Bowl between the Wolverines and my Cougs. I was disappointed when we lost, but I still consider this to be the greatest moment in Wazzu football history.

  • 1:55 Does anybody know what that song is? Or is it just an ABC song, because it is great! Go Blue!

  • wo wo wo hold on do you mean to tell that washington state actually made it to the rose bowl are you tellin me they were actually ranked and are you telling me they had more than 2 wins in a season

  • @DuckPredator96 Yes, history goes back longer then the past 5 years.

  • i think the rose bowl is the most exciting game of the season even more exciting than the NC and i look forward to it every year

  • @ 0:48 cue rocky IV music.

  • Man this Michigan team was loaded!!! Woodson, Backus, Hutchinson, A-Train, Streets, Brian Griese, Dhani Jones, Tommie Hendricks, Jerame Tuman, Marcus Ray, etc etc. But the best part of this game that i remember is when Bob Griese went down to the tunnel to congratulate his son and Keith Jackson got choked up on the air. What a moment. If you know the Griese's story then You knew what this meant to them, it was touching.

  • EVERYTHING for Ryan Leaf went downhill after January 1, 1998. As much a screw up as he turned out to be,..you have to give him credit for having a great college career. But thats all we'll give him. : P

  • @ZMonster06 Yeah it kinda hurt that he wasn't a great person and was arrogant. But that has all changed now. He has a brain tumor..

  • That opening segment is kind interesting when you think about it today 2 guys Woodson and Leaf who's careers took off in 2 completely different directions.

Leaf- out in 5 years with a career total of 3,666 yards, 14 touchdowns, and 33 picks

Woodson- arguably the best player to ever come out of Michigan, and one of the best players in football to this day.

  • @Theaterman527 agreed. I mean c'mon, Woodson is the ONLY defensive player to ever win the Heisman. Christ, it seems so obvious now that he was the best player in that draft after Manning

  • i think the 100th Rose Bowl will be Michigan vs Stanford.

  • Thank you for posting this. As a Wazzu alum, I appreciate that the editing of this one is very balanced for both teams.

I tune into this game whenever I need to remind myself of why I have hope. Even though my Cougs lost, I can't complain about the outcome because both teams left everything on the field and Wazzu proved they belonged.

  • Damn Woodson was good...

  • polish off the heisman

  • "..and he's got it and he's gone touchdown Michigan"

damn he was such a good commentator...

  • @thedarkpoets Unless USC was playing. then we'd have to listen to Jackson Go crazy about every big play USC ever made.

  • My mom reads me bedtime stories about Charles Woodson every night.

  • who was michigans defensive cordinator during the time

  • @zachbird27

    Jim Herrmann

  • A national championship game played in the afternoon.... I miss the days of waking up on January 1st and watching the Outback Bowl and the Citrus Bowl in the morning and then watching the Rose, Fiesta, Orange, and Sugar Bowls.... god College Football was the shit in the 90s.

  • I was in 6th grade and this was the first year I started watching the Wolverines. What great timing! I've been a die hard Michigan fan ever since. GO BLUE!

  • Remember when I was watching this when I was only 11 years old. I was so nervous Michigan was gonna lose it, but they held on. I was so happy when they won National Champions 1997 loved this team!

  • Your ABC affilitate is WXYZ? haha thats cute.

  • Yep. That's the affiliate for the Metro Detroit area.

  • I'm a Bears fan, but Woodson is by far my favorite Packer just because he played for the maize-and-blue.

  • me too i love the pattened charles woodson shimmie

  • Whatever happened to this Leaf fella, he looks damn talented.

  • @schwabbamoose He was horrible in his short NFL career and was a 5 yr. old when interviewed after another lousy performance.

  • I've never seen a defensive player like that... who could make a big play in big games when everyone knows not to throw his direction !!!

  • I've always loved that little shimmie Woodson did after the interception.

  • lol, ryan leaf

  • Watching this again gives me chills. One of the best Wolverines teams ever.

Around 18 NFL players were produced from Michigan.

  • those wolverines were jacked up for that game.

  • Funny even though this clinched the national championship for Michigan, it was not one of their better played games that year. Little bit of an ugly win.

  • Thank you so much, good sir!

    Go Blue, Class of 2009!

  • Leaf talks about being one play away from changing the game, yet it was two big plays that turned around the game in our favor. It was really good that we didn't have to throw deep at any point during last season, that way when we did it in this game it caught them off guard.

  • do you get any money out of this or is it all just for fun? [you don't have to answer if you don't want to]

  • Jeez, you such a fantastic job doing these videos, I appreciate them so so much.

  • That's such a sweet view of the Woodson interception around the 6:35 mark.

    Go Blue!

  • Yeah Woodson was do-everything for the WOLVERINES, he was the Devin Hester before Devin even came along.

  • I like all the black visors that were used, I had never really seen a Michigan player wear one until I saw highlights of this game.

  • Brings back great memories! I love the intro. I miss ABC College Football. FOX sucks.

  • What a game. Period.

  • man, ryan leaf had the goofiest looking drop back.

  • I forgot what a big lug he was. Especially in that shot where Woodson goes in for the kill at 3:35. That guy is huge.

  • @manwiththemoves Ryan Leaf the biggest bust ever at QB

  • @russellzmi +1 for you sir.

  • "This is the Rose Bowl on ABC Sports." Big smile hit my face when I heard that. Had to replay it like 5 times.

And might I add, 3 parts! That's like half an hour of highlights. Thank you WolverineHistorian, thank you!

  • How did we end up on the same video? Weird.

  • Fuck yeah, WH! I had a feeling this was coming. One of the best days of my life. Also easily the most worthwhile fake ticket I ever accidentally purchased, used, and subsequently avoided all the geezer security guards they employ at the Rose Bowl Game. Thanks!!!

  • I still remember watching this with all my relatives which is something that had never happened before and hasn't happened since.
