I think illusionists should do their own stuff, rather than copying everyone else's. A bit of originality whould benefit the profession enormously! I hope never to see another lame version of "metamorphosis" or "origami" again: great effects, when new, but done to death now.
I agree but if some illusionist can perform it better or put their own little twist on it. I am all for it, as long as they give credit to the originator. For example, sawing a woman in half, look at all the variations, some great, some not so great.
Couldn't agree more -- anyone who improves an illusion has my vote, for example: Pendragons' "Metamorphosis" improved the mechanics; Kalin & Jinger's Selbit sawing improves the performance. Both old tricks, rejuvenated.
I disagree with the Pendragons, they improved the execution with their athleticism for the Metamorphis, but I think it was their Clearly Impossible illusion that rejuvenated the sawing. More illusionist and lady assistants today are using their phisical skills instead of the gimickry of the illusion(i.e. the card board box has no gimmick).
I was thinking about the vertically splitting curtain with regard to Metamorphosis, which shows off their speed better; K & J's Selbit is the same as everyone else's Selbit, but with the addition of an assistant who participates instead of being just an object to be sawed. The cardboard box is a wonderful concept; it's the antithesis of the lacquered cabinet, it looks so "honest" and "fair" and, as you say, ungimmicked.
I finally find a coherent discussion of magic on YouTube and it's two months old... Oh well.
I think that there is room for multiple versions of an effect, eg. "sawing". Clearly impossible is a technical triumph and a personal favorite, but it doesn't take away from the interesting presentation that Kalin offers. You guys might be interested in the book that The Pendragons are having published. It should be available by summer and it will discuss, in detail, many of these issues.
Thank you -- we try! I couldn't agree more with you about Clearly Impossible. Keep me posted about the Pendragons' book, please. While you wait you might like to search for "Reality Magic from Le Plus Grand Cabaret du Monde" and watch Erix Logan's version of the sword box, in which the assistant takes a video camera into the box with her. Absolute hokum, but a good illusion, too!
Wow! I thought for sure she was going to be "clown kabob." But, instead, she used a costume change more often associated with the Tri-sected Lady illusion* Very clever!

I don't know -- Sorry!

WOW! Didn't expect the costume change at the end. So few magicians seem to employ it, for this illusion, anymore.
I also loved the show of reluctance put on by the assistant at the start of the trick. Nice bit of clowning around.* *Sorry! Couldn't resist. ;-)

indeed, and a futher nice touch with the foil

This screams rip-off from the Morettis. I'm not sure cardboard box/sword box combo is a version as much a ripoff.

Should every reputable illusionist carry this illusion in their show. It seems like a lot of magicians are performing this now. Do you think so?

Did this performer get permission from the Morettis to do this illusion or is this just a rip off?
ragtimefan1 4 years ago
Don't know. Hans Moretti's version remains the classic original, but there are several other excellent versions, several on YouTube.
