  • The new one is so much more scarier

  • U saw the movie on Saturday it was. Cool my mom got a little freaked out

  • Just saw woman in black yesterday. It was very scary! Her face was terrifying! I think the creepiest part was the children commuting suicide. So sad!!

  • Damn she ugly!

  • Wonder if the modern one is scarey lol

  • @ShroudedFury ,it is lol

  • @453megatron I was told that it's more about jumps than scares lol

  • @ShroudedFury Went to see it yesterday and i almost died

  • I have seen Paranormal Activity 1,2 and soon 3. I think the women in black is the best horror movie ever made. Along with Friday the 13th and nightmare elmstreet, Horror movies are different these days. Older horrors are much much scarier. And the comedy era of movies back in the 80,s and 90,s was halarious airplane for example. But i am looking foward to the new women in Black but the older one will always win.

  • Thumbs up if you get that feeling she is behind you.

  • Whats So scary about this? Its Just an Old Lady

  • hell no! i hate surprises im gonna play fast forward this

  • this will never stop scaring me.

  • He can't run down the road because the tide has come in: there is nowhere to go.

  • is the first one scarier than the second one or is the second one scarier than the first one

  • @scoobydooluva1998 the remake is scarier

  • @iceangel10221 Actually I don't agree. I found it predictable and boring, too busy and too full of horror cliche. This version was located in what is familiar and real, enough to be possible in anyone's life, whereas how many of us will ever find ourselves alone in a ruined Gothic Mansion of the kind in the current version. I think that a good ghost story has to be fairly restrained and the newer film is completely over the top.

  • Me and my boyfriend just saw the new one....a million times scarier than this one...the funny thing is, he was screaming his head off:P

  • Arthur: Oh My God... Its just Marry Poppins Oh SHIT IM RUNNING MY ASS OUTTA HERE!

  • That made me LOL!

  • Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyummm

  • mmmmm. Fit

  • me & mi ex gurl goin see dis should we

  • im just gonna pretend that she looks like mary poppins xD

  • @jillstillrules169 Look up "scary Poppins". Fucking hilarious.

  • She looks like an ordonary woman, who didnt sleep for 2 months

  • This is the best movie in this kind of movies.

  • Having someone stare at you like that might actually be funny in different circumstances.

  • The book is better.

  • This and the scene of her flying through the window were the most terrifying I'd ever seen.

I was only about 6 years old when i first saw it though. Stayed with me for life, such a good film.

  • the film was shown on ch. 4 1989 on christmas eve, i had never heard of it and watched in in black and white, it was and is, one of the scariest ghost stories of all time but i have to admit the book is much better and is a classic of its time...m r james wouldve been proud had he written it.

  • it is not the only ghost story susan hill has written at all, read the small hand and i think its called the man in the picture, both v good.

  • Seriously, what is the point in scaring ourselves shitless? Why does humanity love it so much? I don't mind doing it during the day but when it comes to the evenings and it's dark I'm like... Why the fuck did I watch that?

  • I've been looking for this movie like FOREVER!!!!!

  • If you think the 1989 television version was creepy, read the book and watch the trailers (creepy enough ) for the upcoming 2012 film version starring Daniel Radcliffe.Unfortunately this is the only ghost story British author, Susan Hill has written

  • The Woman who played the Lady in Black, also played the role of Miss Lemon on the Agatha Christie's Poirot TV series.

  • @Colddeed OMG, it sure was Miss Lemon! I've seen this movie many times (have the DVD) and never realized that. I guess I never was brave enough to look at her straight for long. It looks like the new one with Daniel Radcliffe is pretty creepy too but may have changed substantially from the book or this earlier version. You never saw the woman in black in the trailer, just plenty of girls which are not in the book by Susan Hill.

  • I would have tried to talk to the black woman. Ask her if something was wrong.

  • Saw this years ago on TV. Man, it was a CREEPY movie! One of the better done ghost stories I've seen.

  • Damn she fine

  • Yeah, he runs away, and then decides to hide in a old creepy fucking house, knowing that the woman in black saw him run in there..

  • Comment removed

  • @2pac4e Thats one of the reasons why people can be that dumb in a movie RUN THE FUCK DOWN THE ROAD DON'T Hide in the house i always yell that when watching movies like these with friends on the weekends

  • @2pac4e To be fair, where else was he going to go??

  • "cocaine is one hell of a drug"

  • @jonathan45278 I would act the same way! Hahaha I loved how you phrased it. At first, it looks like she is walking towards him but u realize she is just staring. Menacingly..and then she makes her move towards you..*chills*

  • So I have only just heard about this because of Daniel Radcliffe's adaptation but this seriously looks terrifying! I saw comments about it as a play, and I must say, because I'm a play junkie, I have to see it! Though I noticed that I was more scared when she was far away. *chills*

  • that's a woMAN alright...

  • Fun fact: the guy playing Arthur in this version? Adrian Rawlins. AKA, Harry Potter's Dad. Daniel Radcliffe is playing the same role in the remake.

  • looking for a spoiler here, so you're warned, but who is the waoman and why is she haunting the house?

  • Adrian Rawlins who played James Potter since the first film stars in the 1989 movie while Daniel Radcliffe who played James'son Harry stars in the remake ! Strange, isn't it ? :-)

  • I saw this on TV years ago. This scene really freaked me out. I reckon that I would act the same way. For a brief second I would look at the situation logically but then my fears & flight instict would take over & I would run like hell.

  • The most vexing film so far to have marked its trail on my subconscience since the year 1992 up until this present time. An element of haunting perhaps emanates from the nostalgia of having been introduced to it as far back as 1992, but something had to account for its clawing subsistence for all those years. Perhaps most poignantly, it is the very sorrow and wistfulness veiled behind that evil when accompanied by a bleak silence that spoke at such elevated and ethereal volumes.

  • Shouldn't show her face in the scene. Humanises her too much. That was what was great about the stage adaption/ They're right in front of you yet ... you can't quite see all.

  • @Songremixer123 I saw this version when i was about 6 and the close up of her face actually scared the crap outta me. It's not as bad watching it back now, but it haunted me (no pun intended) for years..... i'm still not over this movie. Everytime it's a bit fogy and i'm alone,it's the first thing i think of!!:(

  • saw this at a theatre once, and it was pretty creepy, but a brill story too!

  • I saw this in London some years ago, but it had a much more claustrophobic feel in the theatre. I also remember the temperature was ice cold during the performance...or perhaps that was just me.

  • Hey, what are you doing all the way out there, Miss Lemon?

  • The play is waaaaaaay scarier than the film, maybe the new version with Daniel Radcliffe will be more effective but i dont think itll be as impressively scary as the stage production; I was shaking throughout the whole thing but it was so worth it!!

  • @thealexis4444 That film is called The Innocents, 1962 (i think) with Deborah Kerr. It is awesomely creepy.

  • This film is crap (no offence), but seriously if you're going to see it, see it in theatre. Believe me, the reaction of everyone around you and you can hear/feel the fear in the actors voices it's better than anything you can imagine. I went to see it with my school, we were all terrified, and there wasn't any special effects or loads of people, there were only two actors, a fog machine and some sound effects, and it was still better than any film I've ever seen.

  • @DreamingUPReality

I thought you said it was crap?!

  • @markblyn I meant the film is crap, in theatre (live on stage) it's so much better because it's more intense and has you at the edge of your seat the whole time

  • OMG! I remember seeing a really scary movie like this when I was very small.. I was trying to recall its name for years. Does this movie has a scene with the woman seen across a lake, and a horse driven carriage going to a mansion that was near a sea or a lake? Someone please tell me.. and what is the name of this movie, and when was it made?

  • I think this film failed to have much fear because they showed too many close ups of her face! Having it mysterious makes it creepier!

  • @BWombat12 Yeah, totally agree. They should have kept her in a distant light, so she would appear more ghostly, inhuman. Getting her in a closeup just shows not a very well done makeup. Other than that, great Horror!

  • @BWombat12 ur right about that, the close ups gave her too much humanity and did lessen the horror

  • I've seen the production in London 3 times & i'm going for a 4th in a few months but yeah i've never been more scared & no film can ever compare or match it's terror. Utterly terrifying & it doesn;t help when i'm sitting in the front row & she practically stares down at me & then everyone in the audience scream LOL whoever hasn't seen it GO SEE IT as it's done so well

  • disliked this only because it is fucking terrifying.

  • i saw this play yesterday, it didn't help that we did a workshop just before it started and they made me walk towards the door, knock three times and then scare the living daylights out of me when it flew open with no one behind it!

  • @alexmckenzieisabeast very macho

  • IM crapping myself im going to see the production with my school this week... im gonna plug in my ipod and watch a film :L <3

  • i watched the theatre with my school

it scared the living shit out of me.

  • if Daniel Radcliffe will play the woman in black it's going to be creepy cuz he's a fuckass!

  • Is this the movie Daniel Radcliffe is going to star in?

  • @Southparknscrubs He will star in this year's remake by Hammer, yes.

  • Such a simple scene and yet it gave me the chills!

  • i didnt expect that, but this one scared the hell outha me!! =S

probably cause its not an ordinary commercial horror, but more ..silent and mysterious....

    chillzz =X

  • This play has literally scarred me for life. It was amazing, but scared the hell out of me. It wasn't as half as effective as a film.

  • Chilling:

A good book, a great TV show and a fantastic play.

Come on Harry Potter complete the set with a cracking film adaption.

  • This is like me and my bird after a row.

  • i read this recently and i think as a boy years ago to, im 27 now

borrowed it from brighon libary as the cover catched my eye.

very good book, great atmosphere but didnt know it was so popular and certainly didnt know there was a film. i wonder if i saw this as a kid too, maybe sitting in the dark with mum. i remember seeing a ghost of an old french woman in a cottage we were renting for our holiday in france as a kid, spooks me to this day

  • There is a short story that's just come out that is so scary, people are going crazy! Very few people can even finish it, even though it's only two pages long.

    Follow me.

  • very scary!!!!! saw it on tv in 1989 and again last month. very well done and convincing and scares you every time you watch it !!! they should've released this in cinemas. scarier even than some of the hollywood horrors! The sad ending makes it even scarier. fuck the slasher horrors, it's these supernatural ones that make you tremble!!!

  • Is it really scary?, I'm going to see it for my English trip

  • its less scary when they do close up shots

  • One of the best ghost storys for years gets even scarier later on. Like many great films or tv shows not available to buy in the Uk.

  • One of the best Ghost Storys for years gets even scarier later on

  • there was a movie sorta like this, an abusive mother loses her wealthy husband, and at the "party" after the funeral, she gets mad at her daughter, runs to the ocean killing herself. years later the daughter keeps seeing a woman in black, who she believes is her mother, does anyone know what i'm talking about

  • His name is Arthur Kipps, not Kidd :L

  • @OMGitsJustCeci You're absolutely right. the original story by Susan Hill is somewhat different. The film is still quite scary but the stage production is much better and the book is brilliant. It would be great if we could have a film remake of "The woman in black" that sticks to the storyline.

  • @LadyManners1 They're re-making the film version, with Daniel Radcliffe as Arthur Kipps. I'm SO hoping that they stick to the plot and use a little more sublety than the origional film!

  • ohh is Daniel radcliffe movie is the remake of this scary good

  • @alexmckenzieisabeast i wish i could like this twice

  • We watched this today and the part where she jumps out infront of his bed scared my entire class shitless XD

  • i remember watching this as a little kid. it scared the shit out of me. i had nightmares for so long. and could'nt sleep. just because of this one scene(which i cant seem to find), of her flying through the window, with that cliche horror violin song playing. with her old green greasy face, her screaming like mad.

  • I have seen the stage show twice, and I don't mind admitting that it is the scariest show I have ever seen, and far more scary than those stupid horror movies that so many people rave about (they never do anything for me). If you get to see the stage show you must go, trust me you will not regret it. It's on in London at the Fortune Theatre.

  • cant wait to see it with dan !!<3

  • Isnt Daniel Radcliffe supposed to be in aremake of this movie? I heard it from clevver tv

  • @Nacyfangirl

    oh joy ......

  • @Nacyfangirl yes he's already done filming

  • @Nacyfangirl yessiry

  • this film is ok but when i saw it i shat my new pants

  • I saw this film as a teenager in the early 90s. I forgot most about it except.... the final scene. That creepiest scene has been with me always. My memory of that final scene was mixed with this one where her expression of hatred towards Kidd and her sickly pale dead look are so clear. This is one of my favourite ghost stories ever and I've seen and read many. To be real scared you need very little to none in the way of special effects. I HOPE they won't forget that in the theatrical version.

  • Not as scary as the book. But there's a remake due for release in 2011.

  • There is going to be another movie of THE WOMAN IN BLACK and Daniel Radcliffe will be in !!!! i think he will play the young lawyer!!!

  • i agree that this isn't anywhere near the level of creepiness of the stage production - the whole hovering of the woman over the bed was actually sort of funny. sort of. :P but anywhere, not nearly bad enough to give me nightmares - i didn't sleep for months after seeing it, thank god for lava lamps. xD

  • we had 2 watch this in english for our lesson. it terrified me.

  • @THEJADEBUDDING - Same here!

  • imdb is wrong it is kipps

  • Comment removed

  • The actress playing the woman in black is the same actress who played Miss Lemon in the Poriot series, hard to believe heh?

  • This movie is very stupid and no sense.

Nobody is scared of that movie...

I did not like this movie!

  • he should have gone up to her and started taking off her dress .. then see who starts running.............

  • why didnt he go up to her and start unbottoning her dress then see who runs away....

  • i went to see this for drama, fucking hell did i scream. considering we were all 14 or 15 we were petrified

  • i just thought of something imagine if this movie was in 3D

using RealD 3D.that be truerly horrifing

  • As a kid we wern't allowed to swear in my house, but when I saw this in 89, I f***in swore like hell, its the scariest bastardist thing on the net especially when she's hovering above water...fuck

  • The reason why he ran away from her was because he explains later in the film to the older guy who invites him to dinner that she unleashed some kind of power towards him which consisted of hatred and fear which in result made him frightened and run away.

  • I don't know why he runs away.

He should just walk right up to her face and tell her to get lost.

  • @1983alp and you would do that if someone like the woman in black was staring at you?.

  • @1983alp i agree tell her he's gonna smash fuck outta of her all over the place don't care whose watching ...in front of her parents kids cctv up the path all day long ...OH PS that gay lad from harry potter will be shit ...

  • @1983alp Skullnut the bitch right on the nose! LMAO

  • @1983alp well said, thst's the prescription alright to get rid of things like her, saying fuck off, brilliant

  • same here i went to see it last week in the fortune theatre on a drama trip never seen anything as scary i had nightmares hahahahahaha :P

  • No, I saw it at the Lyceum Theater in Sheffield :) Why?

  • Oh my god, I went to see this about 2 months ago n a school drama trip. I shat myself :P x

  • fucking scary

  • went to see this on tuesday with my school for our Gcse Drama, bloody hell, i shat myself , the rocking chair is horrible, it was so scary and it takes something amazing to scare me but i would definatly see it again

  • I just went to see the play with English last night and I thought it was bad, but OMG this is so mcuh scarier, especially the bed scene. Our whole class began screaming haha. I wish the rocking chair bit was in the film though, that bit scared me senseless

  • it's actually arthur kipps but the film says its arthur kidd!?

  • ahh his face! lol

  • Best ghost story ITV ever put on. I was scared senseless by this scene and the more scarier one when he finds this same woman floating above his bed as he awakes !! Bear in mind this is over 20 years old now

  • I am NOT watching this in the theatre cos every1 says it's much scarier than this which is WAY scary enough for me! esp the Bed Horror scene - aaargh! The ending is just as bad and this scene is a little taster for the horror to come. Yes, I wonder what she wants to do to him?... Necrophilia? ! LOL!

  • I saw the play last night and I am still awake. It is SCCAARRRYY. Damn you Woman in Black!

  • This is no where near as creepy as the stage production, i saw the play once - couldnt sleep for 3 days. after that i LOOKED like the woman in black XD

  • @arrex05 So true, the play was the scariest thing I have seen in my life. No other play or film has really scared me, but this totally did.

  • @arrex05 i know exactly what you mean i had nightmares for a good month. i was fine during but when i got home i was so creeped out :P but that just means that it's a fantastic play

  • @arrex05 lol i agree compleetly if ur going to watch it watch the play ever since i saw it in Londen iv been trying to find it inproduction in holland becuse it was just so good

  • @arrex05, lol, I agree totally. A film just can't capture the same atmosphere.

  • @arrex05 if you liked the woman in black, i tell you a show you wouyld love, its called ghost stories, i saw it last week, and let me tell you, i fucking shat my pants, its ten times as scary than the woman in black lol

  • @arrex05 I found it creepy...

But the very end man... That gave me the freaking creeps.

Especially since the Woman in Black's face hovered and glowed behind the curtains... Ugh...

  • @arrex05 I found the movie scarier. In the theatre i was too aware i was sat in an audience watching actors on a stage. Watching the movie. i was in a pitch black room with only myself as company.

  • ive always wondered what would she have done if she got close to him?

  • yeah me too i bet it would have been even scarier :) jeez it was scary when she was walking closer to him in this scene anyway :( pauline moran is an amazing actress :D xx

  • I would love to see the play, I wonder if it's going to tour in Northern Ireland or if a trip to London is in order? I missed it a few years back at halloween because it was billed as suspense rather than horror & now I'm hearing it is the scariest play ever to be put on stage, so desperate to see it!

  • Play is awesomely frightening as is the book. See it/read it now!

  • who's that ho in the grave yard club lookin all hot in the club yo. gettin down low in the grave yard shake that thing chace the man through the club yo yo.

  • haha! lol

  • chase*

  • I saw the West End play last night... Watching the film again wouldn't frighten me at all now... Apparently the book is even scarier than the play :S Anyone read it?

  • very very eary

  • She has the look of Margaret Hamilton. Very creepy.

  • ......another scene which was very simple but effectivl frightening was when the old woman was rocking violently back and forth on a rocking chair over and over again it was rather disturbing...wow ive only just discovered there is a movie version of this

  • ...... in the above scene the stage back drop was competley and the woman with her back turned and hood up (in black of course was) cameoflaged against it so the audience could not see her, all of a sudden she turned her head to the side and you could see a creppy white profile against the bakdrop and all the audience gave a little gasp.

  • This is pretty damn scary!!

I would love to see the play version of this!

For anyone who has seen this play live, could you let me know what you think makes a good horror play scary? What do you think it is?

Loud sound effects, creepy images etc.?

  • It's an outstanding play, i highly recommend it.

I've been to see it 3 times now and every time i've been scared silly.

Yeah, loud effects, creepy immages, great suspense and story plot.

    It's very clever.

The Fortune Theatre is a great place that's been showing it for 20 years now i think. It also tours around places.

    I hope that was useful :) x

  • Based on the book.

  • Comment above you should help :)x

  • I have seen the play and it is VERY scary. People were screaming in the audience it was so terrifying! Sooo amazing!

  • i saw the west end play many years ago and i still remember being scared in my bed that night. There was clever use of a torch making creepy shadows on the stage, sudden frights such as a loud blood curdling scream when the moment a character touched the doorknob he had been procrastinating over opening.

  • The play is AMAZING

The theatre is really small so no matter where you sit you have a great view

This also makes it a lot creepier because the woman walks around the audotorium so she walks past you if you are in an aisle seat

It is SO scary, I mean people screaming out loud and popcorn flying everywhere scary!!

Go and see it, it's awesome :P

  • going to see it for the second time on saturday, cant wait :D

  • scariest part in the movie..this part freaked me out still does scariest movie ever hands down!

  • Yes, I did just die.

  • was this the movie of the play, nor did the play come out after?

  • I got the audiobook for 4 quid on itunes too and its brilliant. Great and very spooky listen.
