  • Those poor hornets :(

  • "Captain, the deck is all washed clean!"

    "Okay, wipe it dry then!"

  • isnt salt water bad for those jet engines?

  • Didn't your Mom ever tell you to put your toys up? Geeze guys lol

  • I came through weather like this when I was on the USS Constellation, at times our destroyer escort got completely covered up. Riding up and down off of swells is something else. I remember someone telling me one of the dangers of this weather is falling off a big swell and exposing the screws which can cause damage by vibration. Thanks for the video.

  • Even Aircraft Carriers have Windscreen Wipers...

  • It's a good sized spray...but when you get green water, that's when you gotta watch the fuck out.

  • Geeee was the UH60 on the deck still operational after that?

  • That's one way to clean the runway deck lmao

  • not a good day to be on a destroyer

  • I'm turning green just looking at it. Why didn't they just sail around the storm?

  • @jrkepler Not that easy to sail around a typhoon.

  • Where is my surf board! On second thoughts...............FUCK THAT!!!

  • i liked this video but i really loved reading some of these comments. the comments had me in a total laugh session. thank you internet !!

  • Who forget that airplane forward with these waves???????????

  • @huscherle I hope you aren´t serious about that question. IF and only IF the answer is yes, you might be the dumbest person on earth......

  • Give me good old terra firma any time the more firma the less terra

  • lol all i can think about is the poor chiefs trying to cook food in those conditions D:

  • i wonder how the planes dont slip and fall, please don curse at me in a reply message.

  • @Number1FanProduction They are locked down to the deck.

  • OMGawd! First I was feeling sorry for the F-18 in the salt spray, then I saw the helo up there by the bow! It must have been trashed! Thx for sharing this.

The more YouTube comments I see, the more I think people should need a license to drive a keyboard...

  • @zcg3 fuck ur mom u bitch ass, pussy ass, punk ass, pice of shit!

  • @menkeechang - we're so FOS you're USING OUR INTERNET. Get off our planet, you oxygen thief.

  • That wave is a liberal, anti-american who hates the military. Glenn Beck should take a look at this.

  • @zvg3

It's not a ship retard! It's a fuckin aircraft carrier!

  • @KOSKESH43 Fuck you..what do you think a aircraft carrier is...you dumb som bitch...

  • Fake................fake ship and fake wave...

  • @zcg3 i love people like you who get on every video and say "fake". your a moron. plain out.

  • @Camdawg117 You're a fake...go back and suck some more dick...asswipe!

  • @zcg3 Yeahp, fake like your moms tits, fosho. Go light yourself on fire, moron. And by the way, its not cool to fight over the internet. I guess you didn't get that text. Dumbshit

  • What is that chopper doing up there?

  • Great Video, Thanks,

  • that is some serious pitching deck

  • seen same thing when aboard USS CARL VINSON back in 83 ! LOL

  • who on the weather staff gave the commander the prediction of this storm?

  • So that's where my tax $ goes... to a government whose military leaves its equipment on the foredeck like that. Thanks.

  • Guy 1:Ok sir all the fighter jets are secure for the rough seas.

Guy 2:Good good, ...fighters? what about my 20 million dollar helicopter?

Guy 1:helicopter? *looks out* yeeaaa about that....

  • wow, i thought an aircraft carrier being as massive as they are wouldnt get affected by waves, thats for the vid, im amazed.

  • Cuz I'm a cowboy...

  • how do the aircraft not move?

  • @hoobiehooba tied down

  • @hoobiehooba they leave it in 1st gear with the e-brake on

  • No more poop on the poop deck

  • @ menkeechang i'm american. in the navy. we tend to stuff other people full of shit that blows up and kills the bad guy. is that bad? no.

  • Menkeechang.... Ha ha. You must have a thai connection. Your name means smelly elephant shit in Thai. And you want to point fingers at the us with a name like that.

    Too funny

  • they are not that big, I have been stuck in a huge sea in the southern ocean 150 miles south of the chathams in 30 meter waves thats over 90 feet, 90 to 130knot winds, scary stuff

  • @mrjakes12 Ok, so how do you figure that 'they are not that big'!? What is big then???!

  • @bronco8585 I have seen them over 100 feet

  • lol lookm at the helo, cleanest helo in the us navy.

  • @nolifemerc I wonder two way the hell they put the UH 60 in front of the deck?

  • @Archer28M maybe they wonder also...

  • @menkeechang

First of all, that doesn't even make sense.

Secondly, the chum is in the water. If you all feel like taking my video of the awesome power of nature and turning it into a political debate, be my guest.

  • Zolta Bebto from Hungary,Europe.

  • holy fk

  • WOW, that's amazing that a ship that size can get tossed around. Just shows that whatever man makes, mother nature can beat it up.

  • thats what i call a big wave, gave that helo a good was up front!

  • Ok tough guy. Maybe you live in the Bearing Sea on a row boat and don't think this is a big wave. But the deck of an aircraft carrier is 60' in the air. So when a wave crashes over the bow, the wave is taller than 60'. I'm guessing you follow so far. That's a 5 story house of water hitting your boat. But good job watching the video for 45 minutes.

  • @raybieze Great way to put it.

  • @raybieze flight deck of the Kitty Hawk was 72 feet above the water line. One big assed wave.

  • @raybieze do you work on an aircraft carrier?

  • @raybieze The wave isn't anywhere near 60'. Due to the length of a carrier and the mid/aft portion riding atop a wave crest while the bow dips into the trough of another, waves far less than 30' can crash over the bow. These waves were 20-25' in this video, and I can tell you that because I was the on duty weather observer during this storm in 2008 and took the Wx observations myself that day. These waves were from a "Shanghai Low" moving up the coast of Japan while we were on sea trials.

  • @raybieze some carriers are even higher,

  • @raybieze - Hahaha I'm late to the party but... well played.

  • I must have watched this video for like 45 minutes....never saw "The Big Wave."

  • @theshyguitarist ur an idiot, 60 foot deck and a wave crashing over it

  • @snowmobilejon5000

Oh....ok. Another tough guy on the internet?

Here, let me buy you a big huge tall glass of stfu.

  • That's an amazing sight. I've never been on the ocean and to see a ship this size riding the waves is pretty astonishing. What about the helo at the bow? Is it normal to leave it there during heavy seas?

  • thats unreal when you think that flight decck is about 5 stories high.

  • is that a helocopter at the bow?

  • its amazing how much these carriers can move. when you walk on one while docked it feels like a sidewalk on mainland. amazing.

  • Nice video, I was stationed on the Kitty Hawk when we took a Rouge wave on the starboard side. What made that even weirder it happened less than an hour before we found out about attack on the USS Cole.

  • I love how a multi billion dollar carrier has the windshield wipers of a 1972 AMC Gremlin.

  • i hope they fish oiled those planes lol

  • I was on a destroyer in the Atlantic in the 70's and went through numerous storms like these. Had a couple of windows blow out on the bridge while i was at the helm. Also seen a big tanker just going in circles in a big storm no more rudder. Took like four guys to open a hatch to see outside. Don't sleep holding onto your bunk for two days. See sick and all that good stuff.

  • Atravessar o mar não é pra qualquer um !

  • Since the Kitty Hawk was probably heading to retirement. The Captain may have decided to push her. It was obviously too dangerous to have anyone go out there and move the aircraft.

  • how sure is that these planes arent gonna slip away...?

  • They are tied down to the deck really god

  • @MortallicA91 27 tie down chains say so!

as weather is no surprise they are well in place beforehand, tho I question why that helo was on the bow, only the air boss knows why.

Maybe he thought the line division of that squadron had nothing better to do than a freshwater washdown and the boat had plenty? LOL!

I was on CV-43 when we rode out Hurricane Ewa I guess around '82. I don't get seasick, period, but lots of guys did. Toss you our of your rack!

  • @batvette

Love the Navy but that shit about getting tossed out of your rack is crazy as hell hahaha, sleeping and dreaming about Megan Fox and suddenly WHAMMM you're on the floor LOOOOL

  • @BruteCommando The navy has been ruined by a bunch of weirdos

  • @mathyu0179

    uuh ok

  • @BruteCommando errr ok

  • That carrier can withstand a 70 degree pitch! That was nothing!!!!

  • A question....

does the airplanes getting any dammages from the sault water?

  • Looks to me like a couple of plane captains are in for the riot act being read to them by the air boss....that helo nor the F18 should be on deck at all during this weather.

  • great footage, I have been in seas like that on the IKE. It's a ride too.

  • Why are the aircraft out on deck? Would they actually try to fly in that kind of weather?

  • I think about 24 chains or more

  • thats 90 foot wave, rocking navy ship

  • how do they secure the planes for the ride?

  • @svinehunden i think with rails or something in the deck..and then they put ropes on them to save them

  • hum, they are called ropes

  • @svinehunden yes sir

  • Poor helicopter at the front... took a hammer... battered to airworthless

  • even i can see it's an F-18 dual tails cocked out towards the side, dead giveaway if u know ur planes

  • sink ya fuk

  • what a cute name for a killerboat

  • tell me why any of you dill-weeds think that jet is an F-15?

  • Seconded. Anyone heard of a Hornet? No?

  • cause don't the air force land on navy ships? huh huh ! lol ............jesus a living chist ! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHQAHAHAHA ! GO GET EM @ hauhine !

  • Hard to believe she's decommissioned now.

  • Вот долбоёбы.. Попали в шторм а у них самолёт и вертолёт на палубе... А если смоет? Кто виновать будет?

  • How come there are planes (well, an F18 and a helicopter) out there?...i mean, sure they are thetered, but wont be all that salty whater really harmful to the engines and mechanisms?

  • The helo is always on standby for search and rescue and usually on a carrier they have at least 2 birds on ready 5.

  • You Squids the airdales got to be kidding me in 79 we shot and recovered in that shit and stood flight deck watches and fixed birds in it, granted im 50 now has the roof rats and bird farm turned into real bitches or were we showing ivan that we will do what it takes cause we did it must be safer up there when i was in ,,but still you guys stay safe cause they dont pay you haz pay cause its a game bless you guys

  • That's pretty awesome. I spent 4 years on carriers and never saw anything like that.

  • do pilots take off in this whather?

  • if they have to what they do it time it. You can load up an F-15 in the block and have it off your deck in a matter of seconds. So you wait until u take a wave and your bow in up then you lauch.

  • thanks for info

  • jgh,

firstly, what the hell does 'if they have to what they do it time it' mean? English please. Secondly, when did the Navy acquire F-15s and when were the certified for carrier operations?

  • well look at the comment above mine. "do pilots take off in this wheather" my answer "if they have to they do it." yes i may have not been clear but saib717 understood it. And the Navy acquired F-15 in the early 70's. Look of the F-15N Sea Eagle. Any more questions?

  • The F-15N Sea Eagle never made it out of the concept stage; so the way I see it, the F-15N was never really a Naval aircraft to begin with. Besides, that said, I fail to understand why you would use an F-15 as a Naval reference when the carrier version never went into production.

You aren't the only one who knows some shit.

    Any more comments?

  • Apologies for the interrupt in the comment, but have to say, it was a question I had on my mind when I read @saib717 's question, and understood completely your reply to it, so I am saying thanks for the answer and I think " nit picking " is not helpful or conducive. It's a disagree or argument for the sake of it. Thanks for your understandable answer.

  • wow!!! seen some waves on the Rainier(aoe-7)never that big. Let's break out the sardines on the chow line.

  • do they always leave the planes standing on the deck like that? no matter how the weather is?

  • sometimes, most times it's stored inside

  • Underway, is the only way!!!!

  • That is exactly why I tell people, Never go out on the ocean in anything smaller than an Air Craft Carrier. Anything smaller in a pissed off ocean like that one and your just dead.

My Carrier went into storms like that one. Everyone was puking. Ah the memories.

  • yea seriously...breaking out the dramamine

  • Time to surf ! xD

  • That's what I am talking about!!! Outstanding!

  • As tough as those carriers are, I would be feeling a bit nervous here.

  • wonder if a wave big enough could tip it over?

kind of a dumb queston, i know.

  • maybe a 1000 foot wave!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No. But it could cause millions in damage.

  • is his a american aircraft carrier cause i can see a F18 or is it a F22

  • its american and its a f18. f22 only take off and land from bases on land and not from carriers.

  • Damn! Those things had to at least 80 feet!

  • I suppose Dramamine is not going to help.

  • Holy shit that was "The Big Wave"

The deck is 60' above the water

  • Somebody got a "Sham-Wow" lying around?

  • a good way to clean an F18.

  • pity the salt water would ruin the engines and paint, but yea, otherwise, lazy mans way to doing things

  • do they cover the engines, air intakes etc when the planes are on deck? how much aviation fuel do these carriers hold? i dont know alot about carriers but they have 70+ aircraft that burn alot of fuel. in the gulf war they were flying missions continuously from carriers so thats hell of alot of fuel being used. how do they take on more aviation fuel in the middle of the ocean in times of war? these carriers have more aircraft than the largest RAF bases in the UK,the capabilities are insane.

  • mainly aerial-refueling exercises. KC-135s etc.

  • upwards of 3 million gallons of aviation fuel

  • oh, and underway replenishments

  • @deanopks yeah with salt water

  • @deanopks I wonder how long they actually hold up to the salt water before there retired.

  • Thanks to the people who have commented on my comment. I can only imagine that the helicopter was put there deliberately as some kind of test. Or else the storm came upon to quickly to get the helicopter moved.

  • This video just does it no justice at all. Those are some huge swells considering the size and scale of the Kitty. I've seen the Nimitz take a pounding in 40ft seas before. But the shitty part is being on board the 9,500 ton Arleigh-Burke behind her. Damn tin can fells like is going to completely submerge sometimes.

  • en un barco co es yo tambien ir en el que ando yo de 27 metros

y vereis lo que es balance

  • Why have the helicopter pointing in that direction, its engine exhaust would just scoop up water. It must have been a write-off after that storm. Even if they hadnt been expecting a storm of that intensity, it would still take in spray.

  • oh that's a chopper? didn't see that. wow

  • blimey, I didn't notice that was a helicopter. actually puts the waves in perspective now! fuck meee, haha

  • For rough seas like this all openings on the aircraft are covered and sealed, at least to some extent.

  • what, are YOU gonna go out there and cover the dang helicopter??

  • looks like a lovely day to go hit golf balls off the back lol

  • cool

  • lol at the poor helicopter getting soaked out there.

  • semplicemente spaventoso

  • Why don't they put the plane inside to keep it from being soaked in salt water??

  • If you had ever seen the inside of one you would know that its already jam packed down in the hangar bay... not all of them fit in there at once more then likely there are a handful tied down on the aft part of the flight deck too...

  • would YOU want to try taxiing that f18 over across this soaking wet, violently pitching, windy, carrier deck to the aft a/c elevator?

i didn't think so... at this point they just have to wait it out

it's a tough jet, you don't need to worry

  • Those waves are HUGE! Going over the flight deck like that is amazing!

  • dude, the waves are in front of the boat, and the plane is tied down. but i hope that they hose it down. corrosion is the biggest treath to this plane

  • What if they should fight now? Would they start planes?

  • I want to drive a boat like that! How come the airplanes dont fall off into the ocean with waves so large?

  • cuz they are tied down, chalked parking break set, and tied down some more...

  • chocked, not "chalked."

  • my bad... looks like there is a jet on the Cat as well.

  • They glue them down with Elmer's white paste when they're not being used.

  • haha i would say duct tape.

  • god those ships r stable shows u the quality of the navy

  • It is amazing to see white water breaking over the flight deck. It's 60 feet above the waterline!

  • 90 actually

  • How big are those waves?

  • Well, judging by the fact that the deck is usually 60 feet above the water, and the tops of the waves are just going over the deck...

  • wow a religious woman with a son in the navy... never seen that before....

your son must be a stickler for authority

  • Have you all ever driven thru a tsunami? Or sailed I guess the term should be.
