Sorry for this man. But always when I watched his videos I was thinking - was it so necessary to approach to those venomous creatures so close or to grab it by hand? He was playing with death all the time. RIP.
that's just not true. there are something like 40,000 spider species and only 25 or so are venomous. none of these include the mygalomorphs (tarantulas). the bird eating spider has venom, but this is not what kills even the birds or mice. though the venom may paralyze the prey, it's the action of powerful enzymes that turns the food into liquid that kill the animals.
a tarantula bite may result in some swelling and perhaps infection, but thats it.
Diabolical video. That "ambush" position is nothing of the sort. Its actually the second warning position so that the Tarantula can exhibit the red hairs around its chelera and fangs as a last warning to predators that it is venomous and to stay away from it. The first warning is a rapid strike to the predator with the 2 front legs - it hits with them. Overall he exposes he indepth lack of knowledge of tarantula psychology and instinct.
true, but aussie bird eaters (selenocosmia crassipes)are far more aggressive and venemous than most other tarantulas, including the bigger ones like your spider. which sucks actually because you cant handle aussie tarantulas
Bad information, Steve (RIP). The worst venom report I've ever seen was someone that vomited for a few hours and had stomach cramps for a few days, and that was from an arboreal species. Unless you have an allergic reaction, you won't die from a tarantula bite. There's no confirmed cases of it ever happening, anywhere!
They do use their venom on their prey, killing mice quickly but crickets slowly.
for your info ,(no confirmed cases of death from this spider .) yes there are one of them was a very close freind of mine died from his after being bit, and it was not an allergic reaction,
Really watchdog? Hmm...the scientific community should know about that. This is truly remarkable. Please, provide a death certificate to your nearest University biologist or get them in contact with the coroner!
WOW!!! I Do Very much so Respect Steve Erwin (Rest in Peace).
But this video gives Very bad information... and on that note it Very much disappoints me!! Especially coming from Steve...
The venom is not all THAT toxic... This might be Phlogius from Australia which have more powerful Venom than most tarantulas... All tarantulas have venom but none have "Super" toxic venom.
Bite symptoms - local pain, swelling, stiffness, and cramp, for a few weeks at most.
WOW!!! I Do Very much so Respect Steve Erwin (Rest in Peace).

Bite symptoms - local pain, swelling, stiffness, and cramp, for a few weeks at most.
Also that is not an ambush posistion.. there is no ambush position.
What you see there is a defensive pose... Visually communicating... Its saying "Im big... Im Dangerous... I have Big Fangs and I Bite... Get AWAY!!!" its not saying "Get in my mouth!"
I have seen that pose before... in my own spiders... (right before my baby Holothele incei bit me) and they do not hold that position for more than a few minutes...
hunting- all 8 on the ground, and will wait as long as they need to.
Other Tarantula genera with similarly powerful venom - Poecilotheria, Pterinochilus, Haplopelma, Heteroscodra, Stromatopelma, Phlogius) and Selenocosmia...
because of that knowledge... and not what he said... I Do respect Steve... just for even picking up that piece of bark up! however Wile Steve was Still alive he had been bitten by animals Far more dangerous than this little spider.
what is Cool about this species is that sound... They dont have vocal chords or lungs large enough to expell enough air to make that sound... But... some spiders including the Phlogius genera, are able to make a hissing sound... called stridulating... they rub certain parts of their body together... similar to Velcro on Velcro..... that sound was real!!
Dude i forgot how much i effin' miss Steve Irwin! He rocked. The tarantula itself is not that bed my friend has a Goliath, and it's not like it would kill you if it bit you, to date there have not been any deaths by tarantula bites ever.
It is sad that he's passed on, but as a huge spider advocate I can say that he is needlessly upsetting that spider. Wild caught goliaths are not meant to be handled, manipulated, poked at, or otherwise abused. You run the risk of several days in the hospital if you do. I don't approve of his mistreatment of such a majestic animal.
He's like "that's not the spider shaking. that's me shaking. these things me nervous," but he's a few inches from it poking it with a stick. ha ha fuckin steve irwin. rest in peace.

The ones here in Oz are pretty are toxic and agressive....not deadly though....the funnel web is the one you dont want to face. Very very deadly.

they are not toxic, they are like wolf spiders. they rely on pure strength to kill their prey, they just munch on them...
vxenzoxv 4 years ago
they ARE toxic but theyir venom is not as toxic as funnel web one. U can compare venom of the most bird spiders to bee or wasp.
