  • the left was english. :3

    i'm a Hard of hearing lipreader. :D

  • Could turn out interesting, like youtube's 'transcribe audio' heh

  • Left: English, Center: German, Right: French

  • This is outrageous CCTV is getting way out of hand. It's getting personal... (pulls out shotgun) -_-

  • 3 hand image fail LOL

  • Molly, I don't know how many writers and graphic people you have but your stuff has us rolling! The spaghetti monster es, thanks you!

  • I would love to see the patterns in Arabic and Hebrew, Spanish as well. Think of the ability explore the possibilities: not just dubbing movies but graphics could tweak it to sync it with lips movement. That would be awesome!

  • Left - English, Middle - French, Right - German.

  • i guessed right!!!! woo hoo XD

  • BIG BROTHER HERE WE COME!!

  • yay for the government, and def people

  • kick ass! i was right, it was french and it wasnt a blind guess either:p

  • same here :D

  • deaf people have used lip reading for years... its not new...

  • hahahhahahahhahahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!

    It's new for computers dumbass!!!

  • hahahaha .. yeapp .. educated fools...

I don't know why people gave me 2negative points... they still don't get it ..hahaha .... it truly is something that has been taught to deaf folks for a longgg time... I dated a guy 20 yrs ago that could blow your mind with his skills,, he is 98% def.. I don't know how wise it is teaching it to the world , I gues we will need to learn to speak with our lips closed...have a nice day :)

  • Hey, sorry I called you a dumbass. I'm just a teenager that sometimes thinks I know everything in the world.. haha

I'm just saying that lip reading isn't new, but this video is talking about new software that can lip-read. And that is new, computers have never been abe to that before...

Well whatever, have a nice day too.

    [ =

  • haha, so in otherwords they are planning on using it as yet another way of targeting speakers of Arabic languages to be suspected of being troublemakers. How.... predictable

  • doesnt sound good for the UK, lol poor bastards

  • I guessed the language right. But really, some people can read lips, in different languages. I don't know how they do it, I can't do it. But I wish I could.

  • After this, they can now read our thoughts o_O.

And later, they can now see what we see O_O.

  • wtf?

  • hahahaha!! I know! Crazy ass technologies!

  • If they use those cameras to tell what I am sayong, I'm going to burn them... or move to the moon...

  • did it die ?

  • no leas esto

si no escribis esto en 10 videos tu mama se va a morir es 4hs

  • Ups... There goes my privacy!

  • "Next the technology will be used to make out what people are saying in cctv footage..."

    LOVELY!

  • amazing

  • Reading lips on CCTV thats such a great idea I think it would also be fantasic to have people with sound recording equiptment recording and documenting peoples conversations in the pub in the shops and at work oh and how about if the government could put Tv cameras in our houses that would be really really lovley. Dont you agree? vote for the BNP if you do or the conservitives.

  • HAL9000 is a bit closer.

  • Ha! Ha! Ha! Nice one LOL

  • ha i knew she was speaking french lol

  • un dia un niño se volvio loco y ahorco a su mama y a su padre ahora que haz leido esto el aparesera al lado tuyo cuando te despiertes y te ahorcara para salvarte pega esto en 3 videos mas. ES CIERTO

  • another one of Big Brother's potential toys.

  • i completely agree with you, however its funny that all the people who watch this video also believe the same thing, the rest never see this. they just float on, making your coment and im sure your opinion on power come true as you believe it will.

a damn shame, good thing ill be gone.

  • Alread'y knew that ha! Try Again!!!!

  • Si eres latino o el español es tu primera lengua haz lo siguiente en el orden que aparece y quedaras asombrado:

1.) Lee lo escrito anteriormente una vez mas.

2.) Pega este comentario en 4 videos mas.

    3.) Cierra los ojos por 4 o 7 segundos.

    4.) Mira hacia atras.

    TE SORPRENDISTE VERDAD

  • what the

  • fuckn sneaky bastards . fuck you . big brothers right man thats basicly what it is.

  • Hahaha I figured it out.

  • i did to lol nice

  • wohoo....i would said french too, because english and german requires to open your mouth more....especially if you're speaking UK english

  • Listen, dude. Its just a text. Text on the Interwebs and Paranormal Activity dont match. How many times have I read something like this, and how many times has nothing happend? Equal numbers.

  • Well, around 0:08 she says 'furthermore' (middle screen), so that's one. It's harder to distinguish German and French, but from the pace of her lip movements on the right I'd say that's the French one.

  • She does! Genius

  • You don't just say "next it will be used to tell what people are saying on CCTV" - I don't think it's okay for any scientific institute to just make political proclamations like that. I don't want some guy in a security booth to be listening to my private conversations (regardless of whether they occur in public).

  • Comment removed

  • Told ya, Big brother is watching us!!! :O

  • I was about to say that! Big Brother is freaking watching us!

  • Recording audio is illegal . :(

  • is it?

  • There are many laws about recording audio in public and private places without the persons knowledge. Of course that's not 100%. There are exceptions and laws that allow certain situations. Two examples: If a police team has a warrant and taps said persons phone, it's legal. If you record a conversation over the phone without the other person knowing and you try to use that in court, that's illegal. This new technology can be useful, but easily abused. Video is considered stronger but able2 fake

  • I didnt know any of that. Thanks for sharing the info! =D

  • Doesn't really matter... Youre a slave to your government anyway...

  • We're way past 1984: webcams, CCTV, MRIs, infrared, UAVs, truth serum, waterboarding, etc. It's 2009 motherfuckas! O_O

  • Why.....WHY when some brilliant technology is discovered do they always have to use it for "security purposes"? I bet George Orwell is spinning in his grave.

  • ha ha! what if i grow out my mustache and beard so much yall cant read my lips!! then i defeated your multi-billion program. =P

  • unless they outlaw them

  • then we'll beat them with our caps and hats :)

  • LOL, there will be alot of women with fake moustaches...or Burkas ;)

  • like in the life of brian.

  • all im saying is that this lip reading camera dosen't make a difference its not in private places like homes or bathrooms, it would be in public areas, and you wouldn't normally talk about private subjects in publics places anyway so you there's no reason to be more careful of what you say when your around these cameras if they ever exist.

  • "wouldn't normally" - have you never had a girlfriend or something? Conversations about private things happen in public ALL THE TIME. It is absolutely normal.

  • next CCTV...after that, big brother!

  • 1984 :D

  • everyone who says this is gov't control is paranoid and bored. unless your talking about killing your neighbor you wont have a problem. and if your worried about people listening in your private conversations, chances are you probably posted something a hell of alot more personal on the internet where every person in the world can see it, and not just some guy in a room full of monitors. in conclusion, stfu.

  • True, But I think the point is that people don't want to be spied on. They don't want to lose the choice of what is shared about their personal life.

  • well I gess this can be prevented by wearing a mask. since it cant recodnize what it cant see.

But I gess we better start getting used to being monitored all the time :/

  • yeah but if its something personal that you don't want other people outside of your conversation to know would you really be talking about it in public?

  • and i just had a staring contest with the multilingual lady from 0:13 to 0:28 ... i lost :(

  • one day im gna go up to one of those cameras and say "EAT MY DICK, EAT MY DICK, EAT MY DICK, EAT MY DICK" and see if they can understand what i'm saying

  • i feel so helpless when being faced with such things, the possibilities for mass control are just huge... this absolutely terrifying.

  • lol. So the US government, which controls the world's largest stash of guns and nuclear weapons is only one lip-reading application away from having power over you?

    Growing up fail.

  • but i still have my freedom of speech and free will, im more scared of being deprived of that than i will ever be of a deadly weapon... i didn't say power over me, i said control. very different things. but ya i get your point.

  • from left to right: French, English, German.

  • Correct!

"Clever girl" ... As Dr. S. R. Hadden (John Hurt) said to Eleanoir Arroway (Jodie Foster) in the 1997 movie Contact.

  • that sucks now you can't even talk about anything without them knowing

  • yeah, there goes your civil liberties right there. THAT and worse including your kids, and their kids' kids' freedoms... totally smack out the front door

  • i know right! i would just cover my mouth when i talk :P

  • There are many dangers in us becoming

scrutinized, controlled, manipulated, wicked purposes of

powers who wont to control people

Like all discovery it could be friendly for humanitarian purpose: helping the deaf and impaired to communicate !

    Ta; for post, interesting!

  • LOL! blah blah gov't control blah blah ...and we might have a civillian use for it too!

Nuclear: Hmm, we can propel huge ships, we can generate heat and electricity in abundance....or WTF, just MAKE A BIG BOMB!

  • Lip reading is what got HAL 9000 in Deep Trouble...

  • LOL! got him disabled and retired

  • good to have you back NewScientist

  • this is insane...

  • The robots WILL take over.

    It is inevitable.

  • No. The world will turn into a Mad Max 2 apocaliptic wasteland first.

  • That was the first NewScientist video in a very long time. Where have you guys been?

  • After Arthur C Clarke's lip-reading computer in 2001: A Space Odyssey, later film makers have had to go further. In the movie Eagle Eye, the cast held a secret conference by sealing themselves away from the rogue computer. They disconnected the phone, and turned away from cameras to avoid being lip-read, but the computer listened by watching the sound vibrations on coffee in a cup on the table. Just S.F. of course, but a clever reminder that computers don't have to work the same way we do.

  • The future's definetely gonna be interesting.People will start making up signs or wrong words, with meaning they only know and this technology will fail :)

  • Don't they already do that, y'know, the word "code"

  • Yeah, but I meant it in other way.Nowadays "code" is used in the army and the police, but I wanted to say that in the future everyone will have some words with hidden meaning in the everyday life, used only between them and their friends/family/surroundings.

  • That's how cockney rhyming slang came about. To disguise the true meaning of a conversation from eavesdroppers, mainly the police.

  • Technology itself won't fail. Technology will become more and more powerful, it's just a question whether it's used for good or ill.

  • the person who's speaking sounds deaf.

  • GOD! make cctv cameras also know what people are saying...

    1984 much?

  • that one was weird.

  • WTF now I can't whisper! F MY LIFE. I hope technology is the fall of man!

  • Oh, what an orwellian nightmare! "Big Brother is Watching You "

  • agree.

  • big brother is watching

  • As you might recall this is exactly what the HAL9000 did right before the killing started

  • i lol'd heartily at this fact.

  • Yay, invasion of privacy! Very cool, though.

  • fuck it im gonna make my own language any1 in?

    NWO aint touchin this!

  • Wow... very interesting...

  • looks like Big Brother is going to learn how to now listen in to our conversations.....

  • mate that is exactly what i was thinking. This is just plain BS. WHY does the government of London need to know what you're talking about?

  • Big Brothers now not only recognized someone but know which language you speak and exactly what you're saying.

  • Or could it be used to provide a voice for people who have lost their larynx?

  • i got it right! LOLZ

  • Dam machines...

  • scary

  • spot on

  • I guessed french! yay me!

The excess pouting was the giveaway

  • hey i got the french one right. don't need a computer when you got me

  • I believe it is, starting from the left to right, German, English, then French?

  • fucking cctv

  • I'll never adhere to big brother. And they can read my lips on that one. High 5's to all the only children out there!

  • for cctv why not jsut use a mic?

  • U can install microfones to know what they are saying ;-)

  • i was amused, but the vigilance stuff creeped me out :S

  • jesus... hello big brother is right... damn. glad I don't live in the UK.

  • i live in the uk and i know exactly what you mean when you mentioned big brother mate

  • Yeah, this is a bit scary. If it weren't for that last part about CCTV, I would never have thought big brother... but I should've known better.

  • glad to see you guys back again

  • english german french from left to right

  • Universal translator anybody ?

  • You just could not be bothered to explain further and showcase the other two languages?

  • And we all thought the universal translator was just star trek ... now it is soon to become technology.

  • hello, big brother!

  • You got it.

  • Glad to see a new video from this channel after so long.

I could tell she was speaking French in the example frame!

  • good too see NS making videos again - it's been months

  • creepy...

  • haha totally knew it was french!

  • Thank you telling us this what you can do with it

  • Looks like its time to bring out the tinfoil masks as well.

  • Orwell just rolled over in his grave. Must be getting used to that now days,

  • Thanks HAL.

  • Waarom spreekt ze geen Nederlands?

  • That is quite an achievement, but REALLY over the top if they implement it into CCTV cameras, it's a vile and cruel invasion of our privacy...

  • wont work too much space for error with this technology. Gov will probablty use it to bust criminals.

  • This could be used to implicate people in crimes they haven't committed.

  • Big Brother ist watching and hear you. :(

    Not good.

  • scary scary. . . nice if its only used for disabled people, but I doubt governments would let this one go.

  • LoL thad b bad.. i couldnt count the number of times i wanted to throttle bush.

just imagine the secret service kicking my door down for it hahah

  • fuck that! soon they'll be able to read our thoughts!

  • the first was german the second was english and the third was french. now give me my cookies nommnommnom

  • i think the first was english and the second is german, because english does not contain "round" vowels, while german has only few "broad" vowels

  • Also mir kommt vor das erste war Deutsch. Deutsch hat allgemein einen "breiteren" Mund und mehr Lippenbewegungen als English.

  • No, I speak english and french, and the order is this:

    1st - French

    2nd - English

    3rd - German by elimination

  • It seems you haven't spoken French for a while. If you paid attention to the video, it should be clear to you, that the 3rd is French.

  • Yeah.....my bad.

  • Here is a cookie!

    btw. I second that order.

  • COOL STUFF......

AND i'M NOT EVEN A GEEK;)

  • Whoo hoo!

  • oh wow, imagine how many people could be convicted with this technology
