I very much agree with you. It's certainly one of my favorites - obviously. Please take a look at my reshoot of this piece. It's also on my youtube channel. It features alot more atmospheric and cloudy weather to fit with his actual moody language. Would like to hear what you think! Thanks for watching!
One of my favorite Howard poems, as I always thought that Cimmeria was as much a reflection of the darkness and sadness inside of Howard, as it was the prehistoric land of his fiction.
Yes, I understand the inspiration came from this scene, but inspiration doesn't constitute how it was changed in his extremely vivid imagination. For example;when I was very small child, I was playing in a puddle of mud with a stick, but in my extremely vivid imagination, I was in a very distant land with a spear watching the jungle for signs of life.
The reading was really quite good. You have a great voice. The only thing is the images don't fit the description very well. The images you used look like the southwest of the US. Cimmeria was in Scandinavia.
Thanks for the kudos! This was my first version. Some other people agreed with you that the images didn't match well, but because it was too sunny. Please hop back on my youtube channel and watch Cimmeria version 2. I reshot everthing on a cloudy, misty day. That being said, actually this area where I shot WAS Cimmeria. The poem which Howard wrote, according to notes that he left behind, was inspired by seeing this exact area of Texas on a misty day.
I have never heard that theory before, though I think the Greek mythological Cimmerians were in that area. Howard's Cimmerians were the ancestors of the celts in his mythology. That's the reason he used Conan, a celtic name, for his Uber Cimmerian. However, his sonnet, Cimmeria, was inspired by this region of Texas near Fredericksburg. He actually mentioned as an intro to the poem, that this area around Enchanted Rock on a misty day back in the 30's inspired him to write the sonnet.
Cimmeria in Scottland? I thought it was meant as a part of Thrace. Near the sea of Azov. Inspired by Homer's writings about the thracian people and their tribal culture. Sound familiar?
I'm from Texas a few hours drive from Cross Plains. REH grew up in the same time period and environment as my father. This is hard to describe but I know the people, mindset, beliefs and attitudes of this generation, in this environment so well, so intimately, ...and I know Howard so intimately, that it's almost impossible to place him there. He just doesn't fit that mold. It would be like finding out Mark Twain had been born and raised in Japan.
Cimmeria roughly was ment to lie across Scotland to Denmark the boooks used to have a supoerinposed map of Europe over the ancient map of Howards fantasy world. Also Howard included the Pictish Wilderness and the Picts were one of the founding nations of Scotland.

It's a beautiful and stirring tribute to a great man and the poem he wrote that set the stage for the most epic fantasy stories of the modern time.
Unfortunately, the scenes flash by too quickly. I would suggest waiting a few seconds on each shot, to let the viewer enjoy each. I feel you're trying to provide an image for each phrase, but that doesn't give the viewer the time to take them in. :)
Thanks for watching! If you liked this, please search on my youtube channel and watch Robert E. Howard's Cimmeria, version 2. I went back to the area of Texas I shot the first one when it was really misty and nasty, and reshot much of it. The newer version is more in keeping with Howard's descriptions. Gives it a more gloomy feel. This one is much too sunny, though still purty. I would love to know what you think of the "redux".
Well thank you! Please check out the version 2 on my youtube page. I was able to shoot the same area on a very cloudy, stormy day. It's more in keeping with the moodiness of Howard's poem I think. I would like to get your opinion on it. I would also be curious to hear what your masters thesis was on in regards to Howard.
Also, when you get the time, check out the Memories of Robert E. Howard on my youtube channel. It's an interview in Bob's house with Norris Chambers, the one person living who knew Bob fairly well.
@EyesOnly34 Awesome! Any way I could find it online? I'm a huge Howard fan, and you're a lucky one for finding people willing to work with you about him! :) I would love to read it.
I remember - I have a dream - yeah, I can see your point. Especially with the way it's read. Check out the revision, also on my account. It's the same reading but with new shots of a more rainy and dreary landscape, more in keeping with Howard's original vision. Would be curious of what you think.
Howdy! Thanks! I'm not sure what breed you are referring to, but i will take that as a compliment. I hope you also watched the redux with more clouds and stormy scenery that goes more with the actual mood of the poem. Take a look if you get a chance! Thanks for watching!
Do take it as a compliment. Reading literature in general, along with Warrior Poetry and politically-incorrect literature such as that of Robert E Howard are increasingly out of favor in America and I believe Britian too.
@freeheretic111: Sadly true. Out of favor and out of fashion. Hollywood doesn't help with it's emphasis on "bling" and special-effects instead of story line and plot. I've read everything by REH and wish there was more.
Excellent video, excellent. Thank you for uploading it. REH would approve, as would his immortal Cimmerian. Well done

@warriorphotog36 ah right, so he was inspired by his own ancestry (scotland) and of course the place he lived in (Texas). What a fertile imagination.
