The scene where Charles looks upon Brideshead once again and then the flashback technique is utilized is perhaps the best use of flashback since "Casablanca" when Bogart "remembers" Paris!
I have never seen anything top these two films. Waugh's words are of course impeccable, and John Mortimer (Rumpole) did an excellent job on the screenplay.
One of my favourite scenes in any movie - suddenly the disaffected sullen middle aged army officer becomes resonant with the thrill of a young artist and passionate human being. Irons's voice in those lines giving absolute feeling to an aching and intense longing. Five stars for actor and director - and of course a brilliant introductory piece of music.
so so perfect.

"Here discordantly came a rabble of womankind". me and my friend always quote that when we see a horde of sluttily dressed girls

The best use of a "flashback" technique since "Casablanca" where Rick remembers his days with Ilsa in Paris! Absolutely great.

Bill Owen looks remarkably clean and tidy in this but that's because one is used to seeing him as Compo.

The tension that builds from 5:08 to 6:20 is great movie-making.
