Whoever says that you don't strike in aikido has to do his damn homework! Your MUST understand that as an uke you also have to provide a good attack. That is also an essential part of training.
This is the reason aikido has such a bad reputation.
AIKIDO - direct oponent energy in direction you want > brake their balance > apply technique > neutralize by joint manipulation or move to next oponent.
When you think alot of other martial arts do the same but this one relies on no punching instead why try and overpower an enemy that maybe physically stronger than you or when you are out numbered by multiple oponents?Techinque and ending in a stable balanced position to move to the next target is a key in AIKIDO too.
@elcocodriloazul Aikido relies on no punching? Don't know what you learn in aikido, but Ueshiba said that aikido is 90% atemi (punching, striking with the elbow etc). Aikido relies very much on striking, you couldn't trow someone using kaiten nage unless you're striking them at least three times. Imagine trying to use nikkyo without first striking the eyes or nose. They'd just punch you in the face as you bring them onto you. Or koshi nage without striking? They'd pull you down with them
I understand what you mean but when you look at other martial arts and Ueshiba style, the punches is not a stereotypical punch like in other martial arts. This is hard to describe. In aikido when you punch there is usually in very specific places BUT its used as a form of diversion or changing body posture of the oponent. Its not a power punch. And yes, you Dont need to punch to do kaiten nage. And you can also do it with one punch. You dont need three.
Also striking with your hand open to the face, eyes. chin and nose is not punching. You rarelly punch in aikido in the face cos you can archiev bettr results with elbow or open hand.
@elcocodriloazul yeah you try using an open palm strike on a 300 lb man before you try to apply nikkyo, see what happens. You shouldn't really punch someone in aikido purely for the religious aspects of the art, but sef righteousness won't mean shit when you have a guy built like a club doorman about to right hook you. A quick flick to the eyes won't really distract enough while you try to apply shiho nage, you'll end up on the floor wondering what happened. Sometimes you have to hit hard.
this is practice. So the attacker amkes the same strike yes. this is how you train all your moves. Its Aikido is about defeating the oponent without doing him too much harm. If they ant to harm, they can easelly brake a joint really fast and easy. Its also about using the enemies kintic movement in your favour by directing th flow of energy in a direction you want. This is also aka braking someones balanced stand - A common practice accross all martial arts.
@SuperSneakySteve No it's not stupid. You must understand that in Aikido you're doing a Kata, a form with your partner. It's a work where you are trying to understand the principle of Aiki. You want to blend with his energy. It's not a real fight. In a real fight the over attacks in many ways and with all his body (2 punches, 2 legs, head butt). It's only a way of working. I think that they're aware of it :)
are the fancy pants an earned thing??? why do some have normal pj's and the others get the big black pijamas??? i never really liked the japanese gear much, i like the chinese jammies better... but whats the significance of the pants???
@SynS7ven Once you reach blackbelt you can wear the hakama. They where worn by the samurai to hide the position of the feet when sword fighting. They supposedly could tell where you were gonna strike by the position and movment of the feet.
nyc i like aikido very gentle n smooth bt lethal. bt i wud lyk 2 c sum blocking punches i wud lyk 2 c sum defence against punchs( basically boxing) n kicks nt only karate chop motion :o
as far as blocks go from punches, it isnt' really about that it's about leading that punch. Some techniques do require blocking, but defense against "boxing" punches and kicks comes later, after you have gotten down movement you can play around like most martial arts.
I can see a lot of bagua in aikido that makes me Happy and good training

@elcocodriloazul Yet, Ueshiba himself liked to end a fight with a simple nodo tsuki, whenever he had to protect others.
"Strike like thunder!" He said.

i like this video, but i woukd really like to see a heavy uke, i mean, a little bit of resistance, not only flow and flow...
pedromartosjunior 10 months ago
@pedromartosjunior His uke is resisting a big deal. At least most of the time. Sometimes he just went with it. I guess he started to get lazy. :)

The attacker does the same strike over and over. It's easy to defend when you know what's comming. This video is stupid.
