Lame,..... I couldn't bare to watch all of it. Far as I got was to dude talking about his car like it had to have the motor "built" to run 11s... gimme a break!! 1st of all the cheese-ball star of the show starts out saying "GM" put a turbo on a Buick, when in fact these cars was designed and built back in the day when there was a "Buick Motor Division" that had free reign to do what it wanted to.
I love the Grand National. Still one of those cars I want to own before I die. This car gives me hope that my 3.0L with a forged bottom end can make big power with the Precision turbo I'm working with. ;)
GM was not the only ones to play with turbo's, after turbo's entered the car scene iron block v8's were not the only thing dominating the track any more.
@UserNamei5 F40 didn't show up till 87 and the 959 was not included in their top guns issue because it was not a U.S. spec model. And the Lambo ever made any 0-60 runs faster than 4.6. I'm quoting Car a Driver specs from the day nothing more. Just 0-60 not 1/4mile or top end.
hell yeah! I love T-R's and i'm savin to get one after deployment. till then im building up a regal with a small block v8. also take a look at the 89 turbo trans am, a pontiac with a buick heart!
If memory serves me right the 86 GNX was the fastest 0-60 car tested by Car & Driver that year. It did it at 4.6sec.... faster than ferrari's, lambos, Porsche's... everything.
@a73formula Isn't a sedan a 4 door? The GNX's were 2 doors and in the issue I'm referring too didn't separate the cars in to any categories. It was simply the lowest 0-60 time for a "U.S. street legal ,production" car that Car and Driver tested for the year. Again... only what Car and Driver has tested for that year.
Raced a 70-something guy and his elderly wife from a dig in his GNX this afternoon. It was purty. And purty loud. Definitely built up. He tore me apart in my little Saturn Ion with the SS/NA 2.4L LE5 motor. Even in tuned mode, I'm still at 12.5 lbs/hp, and that's what those were running stock back then. Amazing cars.
WTF! when i think of buick what comes to mind is a 70 y o woman driving with her head over the steering wheel and a shit load of cranberry juice in the back seat lol
Awesome video glad you got the t-types in there, i can talk to a 100 people and maybe 1 knows about t-types im not sure if they had any hot air cars there but that would have been sweet to report on
A buddy of mine had one in school back in the early 90's. It was a beast of a car for a teenager. We simply called it the nash. I had a 72 c-10 with a built up SBC and we were supposed to run em but never got a chance because something on the turbo broke and he had to garage it. I think he ended up selling it. Still, I love those GN's.
I was around in the 80's when these cars came out and they were fast, no doubt. My '86 'stang GT was slightly modded, and could hang with t-types and gn's no sweat. never raced a gnx. but for automatics, versus a 5-speed, they did move out nicely, and in luxury, with fitting 5 peeps. in comfort.
with a few mods, these gn's can run 11's and 10's all day long. Long live the GN!!
ive never seen under the hood or under the grand national personally, but i kno once you take off the stuff you dont use or stuff that doesnt work(like AC) then i have alot of room to work with
I'm 99% sure the engines have different internals and you can't just "strap a turbo" on a cutlass and have the same thing. You need lower compression pistons, and different heads. Or, you need to run less boost....You could probably make yours as fast as a stock GN, but not a crazy fast one without internals.
@TheSmokingTire Oh yah no doubt about that, but just as bolt on it will increste the HP. Yes he going to have to up his fuel and Ex system, just to get 75 hp out of that bolt on. Now remember TWill16, bc ur adding more HP to ur car will make other go out sooner (Hint autotrannys) mostly likly you have in ur car.
@tredeep its been my dream car since i was in 4th grade. now im a senior. it outran a square body nova ss. kids at school brag about the supras and rx7's and all the gay import cars then when i bring up the Grand National they look at me in total attentive respect.
Dont get me wrong Imports are fine cars, I've personally owned 3 RX-7's a turbo DSM & a 79 Impala coupe but this care to me ushered in the Spo-com age. This car lit my imagination & thus began my life long affair with the turbo
@briggs9187 it only have low to mid 200ft. lbs. of horse but with out that governer that shut its down at 234mph but the motor is capable of speed over 150mph stock
REALLY? wow, that is nice, I love the look of it though, I would cruise more than drive it fast but knowing that it has it if needed...the power I mean ...nice car
Thanks man! Yeah, I've got a '74 Camaro for now as a weekend driver, but I'm looking for a daily driver. I'll look around for a t-type and just paint it black. I hope to own that, a '68-'72 El Camino, a '70 Challenger, a '69 Nova, and a '70 Roadrunner someday...
These guys let there "engine builder" work on their cars. The guy keeps keeps asking questions about whats done to their engine/car and they can't even answer any of them. Lmao
Yea I'am only kidding that was an inside joke for all the turbo buick owners, haha but thanks for bieng the first person to ask are you kidding? instead of starting a pointless argument.
Matt, I am so disappointed that you cut the footage of my husband's absolutely awesome run, not only was he fast (ran an 11.2), he also did a small wheelie and he does all of his own work from paint to porting the cylinder heads in his last engine rebuild. How could you have missed that? Overall, I'm glad to see someone giving air time to a great, if under appreicated American car.
jeez, everyone takes it so personally. I don't know who your husband is, or why we cut his run (if we even shot it in the first place), but if we did cut it, it certainly wasn't because of his ported cylinder heads. We do the best we can, we can't be everywhere at once.
There was a time the Buick Regal was faster than the Corvette. I think it's important we remember that time, especially given the news of the return of the turbocharged Buick, the Regal GS.
Ok, good point, but when is there supposed to be a return of the turbo Buick? From what I can tell, they seem to be out of the whole performance car phase.
Headline news on all the major blogs today is the return of the Buick Regal GS at the detroit auto show, powered by a 255 horsepower, turbocharged engine with a manual transmission and all wheel drive.
3:03 there is a story behind the car, ex corvette head didn't get a raise n quit chevy, got hired @ buick and built this to get back. he called in his racing experience from the american racing circuts already using turbo tech, pretty trick. its the american supra. 2 years in a row was enough for GM to step in and end the car after 87 because of the 40+ year tradition of the vette being the fastest GM car. After the goes back back to vette, with the raise as the story goes. Vador was born
because the brand's image is fucked right now and no enthusiast would buy a fast buick. But you never know, Lexus cars are considered boring and only for old people, but they pulled it off with the IS which has a large community around it.
Forget enthusiast thats GM's problem they've been relying on loyal customers with a few exceptions.
I think if they make the car a pleasure to drive and the right price it doesn't matter what its called. And it would be perfect to go up against the Ecoboost from Ford.
Of course the real solution is to just get rid of the CEOs of GM making bad decisions like getting rid of the G8 which was a hit for a bad economy they could have labeled it Caprice a long time ago.
I heard somewhere that they stopped making Turbo Regals and Grand Nationals because they were faster than the Corvettes at the time. GM never wanted to make anything faster than the Corvette. Anyone else hear that?
Man, those Grand National GNXs were the scariest shit on the road in the Eighties. So very wolf-in-a-sheep's-clothing...except to those who know how to look at a car.
Couldn't believe a V6, single-turbo GNX could kill a C3 Corvette until I saw them drag race on Telegraph Road in suburban Detroit. And the local cops let them go! Awesome.
Thanks for getting this together, Matt! A great retrospective about a truly underrated car. One of my favorites.
I was about to comment on how this feature didn't ask the critical questions. Questions like "will it drift?" Then I got to the plug for the Carbon Fiber Club at 9:13. Way to make commercials more palatable.
I knew they dropped the 3.8T into the t/a in 89 but, I never knew what they ran in the 1/4. Do you know? Other than that, I have a very hard time believing that it was the fastest production f body built.
Yeah, I can believe that. The turbo must have been built to spool up quickly. I think it would depend on the driver in the 1/4 between the 4th gen. camaro ss and the 89 T t/a. IIRC the ss ran a 13.4 1/4
Thats true. At the same time I think the 80's as a whole were a time for slow cars. The auto makers got hung dealing with popping out of the fuel shortages. So MPG rules put a brick in one pocket. Then the DOT put a brick in their other pocket with all the crash testing rules that came about pre airbag. With that we saw heavy cars that needed to sip fuel. So they cut the pounds and got better MPG with a V6. then gave it power via the turbo. One of the few fun combo's from the 80's.
I wish Buick was still making cars like the GNX. Instead my family's stuck with the ultimate retirement home car - the 2000 LeSabre. lol it's a very comfortable car, though. Really easy to drive. Awesome stuff, Matt. I'm really glad I found your new show

Five stars.

I was about to comment on how this feature didn't ask the critical questions. Questions like "will it drift?" Then I got to the plug for the Carbon Fiber Club at 9:13. Way to make commercials more palatable.
SDSakuragi 2 years ago
The Grand National won't drift, at least not with a stock transmission. Sadly, they were all automatics....

The best idea was when GM dropped the GN's 3.8l turbo into the trans am in 1989. Fastest production f-body ever built
robm425 2 years ago
I knew they dropped the 3.8T into the t/a in 89 but, I never knew what they ran in the 1/4. Do you know? Other than that, I have a very hard time believing that it was the fastest production f body built.
tona6g72 2 years ago
@tona6g72
0-60 in 4.6 seconds
The closed in forms of 0-60 was the '01-'02 which ranged 4.7-5seconds
Turbo reach full torque at a lower RPM and hold it all the way through the rev band. Thats why it ended up being the fastest
robm425 2 years ago
Yeah, I can believe that. The turbo must have been built to spool up quickly. I think it would depend on the driver in the 1/4 between the 4th gen. camaro ss and the 89 T t/a. IIRC the ss ran a 13.4 1/4

It's a two-fold argument. The Buicks were relatively fast for the time, while the F-body cars and Corvettes were particularly slow in the 80's.
TheSmokingTire 2 years ago

Fuck the owner of that black buick in the blue shirt. Douche can't build and has to buy. FAIL

I wish Buick was still making cars like the GNX. Instead my family's stuck with the ultimate retirement home car - the 2000 LeSabre. lol it's a very comfortable car, though. Really easy to drive. Awesome stuff, Matt. I'm really glad I found your new show
stigger91 2 years ago 3
Yes, I would really rather have that Buick.
Dodge did pretty goodwhen they went as far as putting turbos on basically everything, even the Caravan.

An error occurred, please try again later. For what reason would you spend 10 minutes and 4 seconds talking about buicks? We went from 2 guys in an r8 talking about how it wasn't as good as a gallardo to im guessing the buick grand national? The budget must be tight huh?

we talk about all kinds of different cars, not just exotics. Usually sports cars, but every car can't be a $200,000 car.

@TheSmokingTire ok you win! lol....

watch it again more carefully, its about fast Buicks, with Turbos

DONNYBOYY28 2 years ago
what you dont know is that most turbo buicks would and will lay the smackdown on exotics that are worth 10 times the amountof the buick.. ;)
