  • so basically this is the best set up for beginners? i wanna get into DJing and just researching on the equipment...if you have any other combos for a beginner please share your idea!

  • You can usually find those pins at any local hardware store. They are about 3 bucks each, but thats better than 60 to 160 bucks for a new stand.

  • Very informative and precise thanks man. You are by far the best I have heard on here...just wish you could show about dj'n from a laptop. Thanks for the info.

  • Bro you dont even know how good this is . your amazing . and im just getting started . i havnt bought anything yet lol but i deff am . im gunna keep you posted on how im doing . ( New Subscriber )

  • Newbs, that's a funny word. It sounds like pubs.

  • Good shit

  • thanks bro this helped me understand this all better.

  • HOW MUCH U SPENT ON THIS

  • this was amazingly helpful! i am trying to buy startout dj equipment for my boyfreind who has always wanted to get into djing, as a birthday present, and seriously had no clue where to start.. now i actually know what to buy and have gone straight to google where i can get a cdmix2 in the uk. thanks!

  • @stevieclark100 There are newer versions of this model so you can get an even better one than mine.

  • Hi,

I'm just starting up and I have NOWHERE to find the difference between vinyl turntables and cd players. Could you please tell me the difference and what to do with vinyls if I get them?

Couse I'm still thinking about what should i get cd players or vinyl turntables.

    Thanks!

  • I miss the old New York too.

  • i have that cd mixer and it sucks. its good for beginers

  • My opinion: You can waste a huge amount of time on equipment. If the equipment does the job well whether beginner or pro your a quarter of the way to excellence. This guy has passion, knows the crowd, has filled a rack with cd's categorized (no small feat) and a system he can cart in in essentially one shot. Kudos to you and thank you for the great advice!!! A supportive wife is , well, your a fortunate man. Smiles.

  • dude ur the man and i dont mean the oppressor! FUNKY STUFF.

  • listen up kids...this is the best set up you can get if you're starting out. I use a different mixer/CDJ combo, but the stands/speakers/poles/coffin are ideal. props, mr. funktuall. however, handtrucks are for wussies. be a man...lug your own gear ;)

  • Note to the beginners: lugging your own gear will not make you look like a real man. You will actually look like a stupid man. Handtrucks are for DJs with healthy backs. Real men have bad backs. haha

  • touche

  • bro as a DJ I respect your knowledge but why didn't you get CDJs and use serato so you dont need to carry around tons of cds...also i have 1200s and a 56 rane mixer but i dont know which speakers i want are the mackies standard... i get different answers from all the DJs I know

  • he called us noobs lol

  • helped alot

  • Thank for this.

  • quality video! loved it = )

  • I should also add, that when I say I've seen it, I've seen it on video. Just want to see more about how you add the two and how these CD players work like vinyl... Thanks as always Funk!

  • This is great stuff! Thanks for posting this. I've been messing with samplers and making music for years, but I've never been able to get close to the Dj side of things. I'm really interested in how it all works. I can't wait to see the next one where you go more in depth on the actual CD mixing deck. I've seen people scratch, of course, but what I really want to see is a close up of what you were doing on the tables when your back was to the camera. I want to see how you scratch on CDs...

  • couple questions

    1) What's your record time for setup and/or takedown of your DJ equipment?

    2) Where can I get that Old New York shirt?

  • 1) I can disassemble to 4 minutes.

    2) I have it in two other colors.

  • 1) Impressive

    2) SOLD.

  • good stuff!

  • CD's really saved a lot of dj's backs. I had the old school set up from 20 years ago with speakers that weighed almost 100 lbs. Not to mention the coffin and crates of 12" vinyl. It was a two man job. Starting out, I'd work with dj's for free just to watch, learn and get a few minutes of spin time.

I was invited to a party recently where the dj had one ipod hooked up to his amp and speakers. All his did most of the night was stand around with his hands in his pockets.

    I wanted to punch him.

  • !!!! Now I want to punch him! Thanks so much for adding some of your experience in the comments bro.

This is truly what I do it for. -Like-minded DJs who have done it. -Who have faced over a thousand crowds and slayed them all!

    Madd F'kin Props Brother.

p.s. I miss my old mixing more than anything I have ever owned. Peace

    -Funk

  • @barriobajaj im new to dj-ing and don't know !@#$ about it but am interested. can u use a cd or ipod or something to scratch with, other than vinyl? cause vinyl is a bit of a pain.

  • I'd go with CD over ipod any day. The cd turntables have more options have a better feel.

Follow funktuall's guideline on how to organize your music. His system makes sense and is easy to work with.

    Good Luck.

  • you can get the iDJ2 from numark and it has an ipod dock on it so you can mix and scratch staight from your ipod.

  • hell with the serato, in 10 years youll just need to think about a song and itll automatically sync together.

  • You make finding vintage vinyl fun bro! Keep it up! Educate!!!!!!!!!!!!!BTW I use a Fender Deluxe Passport System. Its a nice all in one model that weighs 53 lbs total. And oh yeah and hand truck is a MUST!

  • Empire State of Mind, Hustlin' by Rick Ross, and What You Know by T.I have slow BPM and all are danceable tracks

  • I think the ease of Serato has people confused. The DJ is the psychologist of the dance floor, he/she is the motivator of moods, the BenGay for your souls arthritis... lol

I had the pleasure of seeing a set from the booth on a few occassions, and watching the DJ "move the crowd" between emotions was blatantly obvious once you can see the entire floor. great video.

  • DJ 101, Yes!

  • Love that mix. Would like to hear some more old school mixes.

  • Funk, great tutorial. Good for you for breaking it down. Dope little demo too. I have a dj background but I basically would just wing it and not focus as much as you do on bpm's, but your demo would put my set to shame haha

  • Sweet. I think the general pop has this idea that dj's just play music. We (4 of us dj's)just had a show on blackfriday and we all took lots of time thinking about the times we were playing and how that would effect the dancefloor. I just wish there were books that held 12" rekkids., ha ha, Great vid man!!!

  • I think there new professor for the dj tutor website. Keep the awsome videos bro. Dj Big I

  • great video!! Have you considered using harminc mixing, I guess you hear what sound good togheter, but I key all my songs and mixing in key just takes it to the next level.

  • I have always wanted to do this my man, but I gotta tell ya. I can't do it. I have NEVER ever belived in making a "set". I always want every show to be different than the last. I need to amuse myself in the booth, PLUS, I worked un the same places for years and the draw was that you never knew wtf I was gonna play. I sometimes (Re: Often) hate the fact that I have to actually "MIX" this stuff because it limits what the next song can be. Doing it in key is DOPE but in the end MORE limiting.

  • Hey Funk, great vid. I just hope there isn't too much pressure on you to do videos like this. There are enough of these type of videos on YouTube dominated by people like briansredd and ellaskin. You, however, dominate the music education and appreciation category by far.

  • great vid

  • this has nothing to do with the video...but i just came across a blog entry titled - The 50 Greatest Albums of the 60s...and i looked through it and thought it was an awesome list...then i scroll up...and seen it was yours....on hub pages...awesome list dude...although i woulda put the doors 67 album at # 1....lol

  • Train in Vain :)

  • hey Funk ,,, thank you for this video and all of your videos ,,,, u rock man ,,, and Paula you always do an awesome job as well ,,, u rock girl :) both of you please keep up the great work . PEACE

  • thanks i knew all this but it made me wanna make a beat thanx funk ps ur vids always make me weanna make a beat cause im a vinyl junkie i cant wait til i get a webcam u gotta see how i flip some samples that i know u know them ur hard work making these vids does not fall on deaf ears they always inspire me thanx!!!!!!!

  • Thanks Funk always informative. You make the essentials clear and simple man!

  • o ok cool Thanks

  • awsome......i should start mixing again but most of my free time is spent listening to all the great music you keep telling me about.....jimmy castor hasnt left my cd player for months! keep up the good work.

  • Hey Funk, How do I tell What the BPMs are for each song, Do it just shows up on the mixer or something?

  • No. There are BPM counters that you can DL for free or you can do it the old fashion way (yeah right) which is counting each # of beats in a minute.

  • good stuff. do what you and do it well. its all about how you do it.

  • Funktuall I'm very surprised that you're not on Serato yet considering you used to be a vinyl dj? Any particular reason why not? Seems strange that you gone from vinyl to that button pushing unit...

  • Did you watch this whole video? Pretty sure I explained how it came to be. Stopped DJing for several years. Got a job in a booth that ONLY had CD's and worked there for 4 years. PS - Serato was not even invented yet.

  • I have thought about making the conversion over to Serato a million times so that I can scratch it up again but...it's expensive. AND I have tried it and I HATE typing in titles on a keyboard. I can change tracks with one touch this way AND I took the time to sort out the BPMs myself. Imagine how upset I was when I found out Serato does it all for you. Any douche can now scratch presorted shit? Seem too easy to me. Besides I ain't got one complaint yet. Why? The MUSIC is all that matters!

  • Usually the karaoke top 40 mobile ABBA wedding dj's are the ones using these all in 1 cd mixers.

  • VERY true or at least it used to be. Now they are ALL on Serato!

In the words of my literary hero DAVID MAMET in "Glengarry Glen Ross", "I subscribe to the philosophy of exact opposites. If the public is all going in one direction, I say bet the other way" (paraphrasing)

  • lets see your vinyl collection

  • R U NEW HERE!!!???!! My Vinyl collection is ALL over this channel.

  • Very informative. thank you

  • thank you! :)

  • Spiffy man. Looks like your quite chipper as of late. Good stuff.

  • cds or vinyls?

  • Thank you! This is too helpful.

  • Good stuff man!
