  • I know I saw him somewhere near Miami in 1986, but can't remember where or when exactly, either August or September. If anyone knows when he was near Miami on that tour, please refresh my memory.

  • Elton did perform in Miami on September 19th 1986!

  • @GregsynthWizard

    Do you have that gig?

  • @GregsynthWizard Thanks! It was an awesome concert and we were really closed to the stage. Do you know what the venue was?

  • It was the "Hollywood Sportatorium" (AKA The Sporto)!

  • I wonder if the nodules would've receded had Elt' taken a vocal break for a few months. I know he new voice strengthened by early 88 after the operation but it took almost a year to fully recover.

  • If Elton didn't tour after the Ice On Fire tour (ending in April 1986), he'd still have his "normal" voice!

  • @GregsynthWizard Ya that was more or less my point.

  • Oh! I thought you were just talking about his 1988/1989 voice! My bad!

  • @GregsynthWizard no worries. From one EJ fan to another, peace out!

  • Peace out!

  • @GregsynthWizard but he would've lost it through the drugs!

  • Well, for 10 years (1975-1985), his voice got better, and it took overtouring and oversinging to ruin his voice by late 86!

He still had his voice intact in 1990 (like the Skyline Pigeon from Ryan White's funeral)!

  • @GregsynthWizard probably not. I actually don't think the surgery changed his voice up, per say. As you can tell by the recordings in the late 70s, his delivery of singing changed quite a bit. Little by little, a lot of the classic songs were starting to sound different with this "new voice." He was starting to become more dependent on the low registers than the high registers. He can still do falsettos - but I don't think he gets a vocal trainer to help him retain this skill.

  • Yeah, he started changing his singing style around 1979 (his timbre got slightly deeper from 1977/8, and got stronger), and each year it evolved! Songs like Rocket Man sounded way different from 1979-onwards compared with the classic era versions! If only Elton didn't over-do the touring, he'd still have his normal voice (or at least wouldn't get nodules then surgery)!

  • @GregsynthWizard I am happy we finally agreed on something :-)

  • Now I can have a drink! haha

  • It's sad that the nodules would cripple his voice not long after this.

  • I think this is the last time he had his "original" voice!

  • @GregsynthWizard agreed

  • Well, there's some recordings from the Spring of 1986 (Only available for purchase), I want to know if he still had his voice then, or if the nodules appeared then.

  • @GregsynthWizard I've listened to an interview from 1987, Elton said the problems came in America and he postponed the first two shows, did the whole tour, saw advice in Australia where he had the choice of cancelling the whole tour there and then as the specialist said "you need to have an operation" or playing with the orchestra and he carried on as he wanted to play with them!

  • Ah! So the summer of 1986 is when the problem started!

  • @GregsynthWizard And we've found out they didn't and also in America!

  • Haha!

  • @weirdguy75

Me too! His birthday (39th) in basel was the last 'normal' gig that i've heard!

  • He still sounded normal on stuff like Rotterdam and Vienna!

  • @omuen We have Munich and Berlin too!

  • If it makes you feel better, Elton still had his voice for the early 1986 concerts (Munich and Berlin of 1986 are examples). The nodules only started in the summer of 1986.

For some reason, I like his tone on this version!

  • @GregsynthWizard MADRID!

  • Madrid is epic!

  • @GregsynthWizard And nodules came in late September!

  • I don't even know when they first appeared. All I know is that by Los Angeles, they were there, and during the August/September concerts it sounded like he had on-and-off laryngitis/pneumonia.

  • @GregsynthWizard probably his oversinging from places like Atlanta and Talahassee finally got to him!

  • He sounds fine on Philly, Haven't heard Atlanta (how does he sound there?), The New York gigs sound fine, the Howard Stern thing was AWFUL (that honestly sounded like nodules), then he's much better in Tallahassee (doesn't sound noduled up). That Joan Rivers Thing didn't sound great, and no comment on LA!

  • @formulaonemad WRONG AGAIN! Nodules must have been there from early September but we don't hear the effects til Los Angeles (Oakland a week earlier is oddly good)

  • do you have more elton john videos like this from tv in the 1980's ?

    js
