  • CALLING NANCI GRIFFITH FANS--does anyone have the ability to upload two beautiful Nanci Griffith songs --1.Julie Anne and 2. You Can't Go Home Again? I would be forever grateful.

  • I've always liked her. Nuff sed.

  • I was into Dylan when I was younger. Over the last few years I started to play Double Bass again after a couple decade hiatus. Someone suggested I listen to Danny Thompson. When I saw this in his roster, I had to check it out. Very beautiful version of this song.

  • Good song, AMAZING cover

  • She has such a sweet voice.

  • Cool,Thumbs up

  • i love this, stop arguing see i cant even spell

  • If only she didn't sound Norwegian when she sang.

  • I really like this song as played and sung by Bob Dylan. Now, that being said...she sang the first seven words and I had to pause so I could say to myself, "Goddamn, this is good." Great music is great music, ladies 'n gentlemen. Deal with it.

  • This is just wonderful ...

  • Great version of a beautiful song...so much better than the original Dylan version, but then he wrote great songs but doesn't have the best vocal in the world particularly live...;)

  • @tropnevadjon Her version is certainly a sweet interpretation. But better than Dylan's? Please. People who complain about Dylan's voice are conventional and unmusical. Like that drip David Crosby claiming that the Byrd's syrupy version of Mr. Tambourine Man was superior to Dylan's. There are countless "pretty" voices like Nanci Griffith's. She's not breaking any new ground. Pleasant in limited doses.

  • @bel5300 Didn't say I don't like Dylan's voice and to suggest that I'm conventional and unmusical is rather presumptuous and pretentious. Some Dylan songs are undoubtedly best sung by him and then there are the others which have been covered in far superior arrangements and vocals. Examples include, To Romana by Sinead Lohan, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix, Van Morrison's It's All Over Now Baby Blue, to name but a few. All in my opinion, of course, which is as valid as yours I suggest...

  • This might be the most beautiful version of this song by far. So amazing :)

  • A beautiful Beautiful song, sung beautifully by a beautiful artist....thanks

  • I might hear her version endlessly.

    Z.

  • I prefer Dylan's version, but this is nice too.

  • Love this version. I found it on a Putumayo World Music collection called "American Folk". I've discovered a lot of great artists thru Putumayo.

  • i think I found the UK version of Nanci Griffiths - check out 15 year old Phoebe Peek a singer songwriter from England - she reminds me so much of Nanci and her songs are beautiful

  • does anyone know where I can find the song 'Drive-in Movies and Dashboarrd Lights'? by Nanci Griffith of course :) Thanks.

  • she is so gorgeous......

  • One of my favorite "minor" Dylan songs.

    Wonderful read.

  • @beachdog67 I remember well my introduction to Bob Dylan. I was 18 years old and my dad and I watched him on "MTV Unplugged".

  • Oh man, I just covered this song, but this guy blew mine out of the water! haha. If you want to check mine out go to Chris Feldbush Music on Facebook. Hopefully I don't offend any hardcore Dylan fans!

  • Sweet version, but check out the Nic Jones version. It's on a compilation called Unearthed, a collection of recordings he made before the crash that nearly killed him in '82. He sings it like he means it.

  • how is that everyone sounds best when they are doing a Bob Dylan song? This is sweet!

  • good try. but no one tops any of bob dylans songs. good try missy

  • @89arnburg because someone covers a song doesn't mean they're trying to 'top it'. A musician like Nanci Griffith is a talent in her own right and covering Bob Dylan is more like a tribute to a beautiful song than some competition... she's a country artist who sings both her own and other peoples songs - as is the way with that genre. Christ!

  • @dancypants403 thank you for that..

  • Comment removed

  • Pure Perfection.

  • 16 ppl don't like love stories

  • nanci's voice is sweet, but dylan is magical

  • Is that Danny Thompson on the bass? (He plays with Richard Thompson)

  • "Jerry Douglas can make you cry." Worth repeating <3

  • I'm from Barcelona! Guess who made my day!

  • Nanci is so young in this video, and her voice is oh so lovely. Oh Bob Dylan, what a beautiful song you wrote.

  • Great Nanci, great singer singing a nice song. From the south, green and wet corner of this world, we are sailing with your song. Chile

  • Hey, I swear to God this is not spam. I would never spam for Bob. I thought you guys might want the real version, and I found it on some weird Vietnamese website. Spare you all the trouble. But just to further assure you, IT'S NOT SPAM! Haha, well here it is: mp3.xalo.vn/bai-hat/bob-dylan/boots-of-spanish-leather/f3a9b4c

  • Lovely version of one of my favorite Bob Dylan songs.

  • God blessed mankind with a varity of singers and song writers but hes done a first class job here..Go on Nanci..xoxo

  • incredible

  • Nanci is one of our true musical treasures.......her songs, her voice, her storytelling, just awesome. This version of Bob Dylan's song is priceless. Love her!

  • I love this version. The music is haunting and the singer is so pleasant to listen to.

    Thanks.

    Boots

  • Wonderful version of this song.............Nanci and the boys are awesome. Love you!

  • boots

  • Excellent version of one of my favorites. I'm a NG fan.

  • Nanci at her very best...superb..

  • You are all playing wonderful and I wish I could have been there and how sad it is that we cannot buy this version on cd.

  • I love The Transatlantic Sessions. JD is a top man and fully understands where America folk music's roots lie. The show never ceases to amaze me, and this is the top performance from all the shows so far

  • @DaMuttzNutz you can mate, i got a cd called other voices other rooms by nanci griffiths, i got it for boots of spanish leather and to be honest its a gem of an album, since then i been a nanci griffiths fan

  • I just love it Nanci is the best.

  • not bad but i prefer the original much more

  • @donnacooleyify

Sorry it's not appropriate for this video,

    Tom

  • Lovely. My heart stopped for six minutes. Thank you for sharing this. My kitten does a mean Jokerman I'll post it in video response it's short and always gives me a laugh. =)

  • I must have listened to this 100 times. I love it!

  • Nanci griffith has beautiful voice and beautiful as she is. I too agree that there is nothing to compare.

  • This is just so beautiful, there's nothing to compare

  • Never thought I'd like anyone else covering a Dylan song. Bob's version breaks my heart. Nanci's melts it...

  • Suze's memory will live on in the lyrics in several of Bob's finest songs.

  • farewell Suze

  • Amazing!!!

  • I believe Bob's version, on his Carnegie Hall album, is the best . This may be second.

  • BOOTS

  • It's not a happy ending....

  • It's not a happy ending....

  • why does this song have an ending?

  • Nancy's version is wonderful. But today we can see that Dylan's own DEMO for Witmark is unreachable! (Witmark's Demo Bootleg Series)

  • So damn good, a treasure Nancy is

    xo

  • This song slays me.

  • Is that Danny Thompson plying the doublebase?

  • @jukka1956

    Yes...:)

  • beautiful

  • Nanci is great. But Jerry Douglas is fantastic on the Dobro.....and not a half bad base player. The Transatlantic Sessions are the BEST!!!!

  • saw nanci in scotland years ago.........twas a great night....

  • not sure if i've already commented on this. i love Nanci's version. it is complimented by the great musical arrangement, and the beat is as if aboard such a ship sailin' away...

  • Nice strings!

  • 99% of this song is the lyrics 1% is the voice, the voice is of no fucking importance when it comes to me

the lyrics of this song is sooo good

  • Oh, but if I had the stars from the darkest night

And the diamonds from the deepest ocean

I'd forsake them all for your sweet kiss

For that's all I'm wishin' to be ownin'.

  • As the woman says"It depends on how you'r feeling".Enjoy

  • beautiful..thanks

    c.

  • very nice...I am surprised Grateful Dead never covered this...or did they ?

  • excellant now try Ronnie Drew and Elanor Shanley ame song }}}

  • An outstanding Dylan's masterpiece but this cover is amazing... awesome! Nanci's voice is lovely, but all the musiciens playing here are masters. I have listened it more than ten times.... and the more I listen it, the more I enjoy it! Thanks for sharing it!

  • Guitar Jerry Douglas - Dobro Donald Shaw - Piano Accordion Danny Thompson - Double Bass ...

  • @littlebaggames

Not a bad version at all, especially the dobro and the other musicians, and Nanci Griffith has a fine voice, although the attempt at sounding Irish wears a bit thin when you know she's from Seguin, TX.

  • @iontxs you thik she is trying to sound irish? sure, there's an old-time scots irish twang in her voice at times, but she doesn't sound like any irish singer i've heard in this clip...

  • @jovialduke Yeah, I probably missed on that one. I guess she doesn't sound Irish when you compare her to Shane McGowan, for example. Nanci's voice is easy to listen to, but it's the words and the dobro that make me come back here.

  • This is wonderful. Can somebody put names to the other musicians ... please? Hello to everyone, from Big Hugh of Mundlimup in wonderful Western Australia.

  • @Jarrahnut The dobro player is Jerry Douglas. Someone else will have to fill in the rest.

  • @w3tua ... thank you. Best wishes to you from wonderful Western Australia!

  • I thought Joanie was the best, hard to decide, joan baez, grady martin, nanci and jerry douglas, you decide. I can't, perfection.

  • I like this version as well as the Bob Dylan rendition. I believe both versions touch the soul.

  • amazing voice

  • Nanci is the deal...Loan Star State of Mind...

  • Nanci's lower lip is so chewable I could die.

  • The most beautiful version of the most beautiful woman with her mates. Great how they find the harmony and how concentrated each of them brought the song. And pay attention of the 'crootsch...' of Nancy at the end. Tears in my eyes and I take this song and version in my heart.

  • great song so so version

  • Jerry Douglas on the slide (dobro) really works perfectly with Nanci's voice on this great Bob Dylan classic.

  • Curiously, nobody seems to actually sing this song as well as Bob did, especially the Carnegie Hall version. Bob has been eradicated, as if he never existed & I would suggest that this is the best vocal effort left.

  • @rvcrvc2 Too true, he's gone. :/

  • It is good, but is just sounds too much like Dervish's version.

  • Love the music, nice rolling rythm. The drummer is awsome

  • A Great voice for a great dylan's song

  • I have given everyone a thumb here!

Because Nanci G. is making me feel friendly!

    Good song - beautiful version!

  • Amazing! Incredible artist. 10*~Roses

  • I love her voice. Sort of irish/Southern. My music spans the globe. I would rank her in the top three.

  • Comment removed

  • reminds me of Catch a falling star..

  • The best version ever of this masterpiece written by Mr. Dylan. Can you imagine a more poetic and epic tittle song than Boots of Spanish Leather??

  • Easily the best version I've ever heard. Nanci's voice is as bright as silver, and all the instrumentalists are spot on - perfection!

  • Jerry Douglas can make you cry.

  • @dolleedagger

Indeed, Jerry's the best steel player out there

  • Beautiful crisp clear texas melody in her voice, still as good today as she was yesterday. Go see.

  • I love all genres of music...ALL....but Nancy's voice is so clean and pure. It's almost like a vocal detox....simple and true. A true artist can sing without fancy electronic embellishments. She's a gem.

  • That shore looks like good ol' Newfoundland

  • the biggest mountains of Madrid, the capital of the biggest imperior of the history... and the more important city of mediterranean sea

  • Gave it a go. Everything was nice except the way she sings "roamin" it sounds like "roman" and "askin" like "ass can"

Nice voice, but the accent I can't tolerate for long.

  • hm...have been a fan of Griffith's for years and love the accent. Hard to change who we are and where we're from to please generic audiences, I would think- the world is not homogenous.

  • one thing we've got in common, is that we're all different.

her voice is so piercing and true.

i think danny on bass really carries this track. exquisite

  • the dobro is over the top...

  • The dobro is exquisite, as one would expect from Jerry Douglas

  • This is a masterful work of art. Her voice is beautiful and the accompaniment of the other instruments accent the song very nicely and brings a since of optimism to this song, but I believe much of the sorrow, loss and longing expressed in the original release of the song from The Times They Are A-Changin album was lost in this remake. As someone posted prior to this it leaves you wondering what happens next. In the original it is understood.

  • This gets better every time I listen to it. Simply marvelous.

    Thanks

  • Good....!

  • I think the measure of a true artist is how they engage with the txext .The text becomes the main thing.Nancy here takes a back seat ,more imortant then her is her is the story ,the tune ,and the other musicians .She dissapears into the story line .We are left wondering about what happend next

Maybe the mark of a genius singer

    Tony

    a wee belfast man

  • Nice performance

  • so weet and pure. luv the scottish background fits well :)

  • gooood...!

  • Better than Dylan.

  • Stupid statement. Don't compare them. Enjoy them both. They're not the same.

  • well said...

  • Dylan thinks so too

  • Not better than Dylan. Not better than Anthony Dacosta or Tyler Hilton either.

  • superbe et intemporel.....

  • 2:31 the guy playing the bodhran HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! i love this song and i love dylan

  • Fajne. A macie Maybe tomorrow?

  • Sweet sweet Nancy. Awsome song. I´ve never been with you yet I miss you everyday.

  • Oh, my! This is beautiful. Love these lyrics! Excellent video! 10*.

  • Perfect ... Mike thank you for sharing this awesome video..

  • Hey Gang, guess what ... We've been had!!

Speaking of all these seconds & thirds & everything, I just came to find out that TomT has a Second Version of this posted!! Do a youtube search on:

"Boots of Spanish Leather - Nanci Griffith (better quality)"

And as the title says, yes it IS better quality - at least audio-wise, although I actually think the video of the original is just a bit better ... so maybe TomT will third himself and release another with the Best audio & the Best video!!

  • Hey guess what best version I've heard. beautiful scenery

  • Thanks for posting - love Nancy's voice and Dylan's song.

  • brava Nanci!...what a song..god bless ya Bob..

  • Haunting and beautiful...

  • hair raising!!!!!

  • What a great song; even Dylan loves Nanci's cover. The band does an incredible job together.

I second your thought Scooter - her voice with it's unique and beautiful individuality are what makes her so pleasant to listen to. Perhaps TheGranule has granules of sand in his ear and its keeping him from appreciating her, LoL?

  • I second that. Nancy's version is the best.

  • ... TEB, do ya mean, that "you Third that!" ?

I never get tired of listening to this. Thanks for your comment, cause it brought me back for another pleasant 6+ minutes of audial bliss :-)

Thanks TomTScotland for the video - I can't believe how young Jerry Douglas looks with no facial hair, what a punk!

Not familiar with the other musicians, but they blend so superbly together

I'll have to look up the Transatlantic Sessions 2, I bet theres more gems on it. How long ago was it issued?

  • I was seconding summo55. He seconded scooter, so I guess you could say I thirded scooter (Haha, great times, great music, great conversation)

  • very good.....

  • Her slight lisp is so lovely to these ears.

  • I suggest hearing Joan Baez on Youtube on the same song. Nancy has an odd speech characteristic, almost a lisp.

  • etherial,.....haunting, simply the best version. thanks nancy, and guys.

  • By far, the best version I have ever heard.

    What a incredible voice.

  • Wow what a great and heartfelt song. 5*

  • "Boots!"

    Love that...

  • is it better when the bird sings or there after ?

  • that was fantastic

  • Beautiful...just beautiful!

  • This is chillingly good. The song's brilliance is in its simplicity and Nanci nails it in this version. Also, perfect accompaniment by Jerry Douglas (et al).

  • This video is brilliant.

  • I read where Nancy asked Dylan's permission to cover the song, and Dylan asked to hear it and sent it back with the harmonica part dubbed in and his blessings

  • Most covered songs from Robert Zimmerman are better than Bob Dylan did it himself

  • sometimes yes, sometimes no. bob owns it takes alot to laugh, it takes a train to cry.

  • I am a huge Beethoven fan: I can only appreciate his covers...!

  • This is the only version of the song I like. It is great. Bob should relinquish the song to Nanci. Thanks for the post.

  • look up tyler Hilton's verison its pretty damn breath taking.

  • Thanks. His version is pretty good. I love his vocals.
