The more I listen to this music the more I become convinced these artist all add to / sample from the same catalogue. They must be sharing files. Kinds makes me sad, though.
@Parousia03 most break beat is based off of the same 6-second sample from a track called Amen Brother. That and the experimental electronic community is pretty damned tight-knit too.
@EverythingSpirals You are recognizing the frequently sampled breaks in this tune, for example those found in Lyn Collins - Think, James Brown - Funky Drummer, Bob James - Nautilus, Deep Blue - The Helicopter Tune, The Winstons - Amen Brother & more... How you use those samples is where it gets interesting.
@sinschgum thats because every person who has a taste for this music is smart.....that statement makes me feel ignorant because its such a bold thing to say.....>_<.....maby were not so smart after all?
One of the first things who "popped up" when I finaly found out how to get into mu-zig (I have no knowledge of using a keyboard, so I copyed from a wikipedia article), this came up, which I guessed would be the most populare, and for a good reason. This song combines everything, I've heard before, squarepusher, aphextwin, slightly B.o.C into this track.
Should I go into details, the only flaw after my opnion, is the keyboard, playing at 1.12, which I found a little hysterical...
This is one of my favorite tracks !!! (aphex twin, squarepusher, edIT, MiMoSA, Fat Segal, WarpRecords) We need more sound like that for our children !!!!
not always imo... in the first place so called-IDM is just a way to pretentious name for this kind of music. It has a special sound, but follows its own rules like other genres do.
@Goblinkiller99 i tought idm was so epic because it had no rules or limitations. You could play jazz, acid or techno name it IDM and nobody couldn;t do anything right?
@zeecount Two years later...It's the remnants from a drum break called "think". It's that song "it takes two to make a thing go right", during the break, there are people shouting James brown style words...when drum and bass first started, they sped up old drum breaks, and that produced chipmunk style voices. As technology advanced, they were able to remove these leftover artifacts, however, the sound became very indicative of the genre, so people still throw them in their tracks.
@DiazoSoulPrint Ahaha, thanks for the detailed and eloquent explanation but I found it about two years ago and use it all the time. Such a wicked sample though.
how about you listen to some photek, source direct, or break? i like this song and i know what day of the week it is. i would mix this with some of my dnb thank you very much.
You have to be so pretentious to say "IDM" as if other dance music isn't intelligent in it's own way. That tune would be much easier to make than a track by Noisia. They don't overuse glitchy broken beats, but have proper substance to their tunes, and more importantly a bassline! Most musicians labelled "IDM" think it's a stupid name so why use it.
You're absolutely right, in my opinion! There is really great experimental music out there, but i hate it when people say its more intelligent than the rest, because it's simply not true... and by the way there are also a lot of tracks in this genre which are just as weak and stupid. It takes more than horrible noises and chaotic beats to create a good piece of art. Repetitive structures or melodies are what music makes to music, even if it's experimental.
This song goes into your soul

I allways associate it with a dog barking, because I first heard it in Squarepushers "Come On My Selector". Watch the Video. ;)
kamalotkam 2 years ago 2
@zeecount
It's a sample from a common DnB/jungle breakbeat, I can't remember the exact name of the break.
But that sound you hear, is James Brown as a matter of fact :) Sped up to roughly double the original speed.
If you slow it down in a clean mix you can hear the original word. Also can't quite rememebr...something along the lines of "brother" something.

anyway, most of people can't even understand idm. they prefer stupid music, repetetive behaviours and they feel stong in big groups.
on their own they are mostly miserable, weak and useless.
