  • The smoothness Thigpen switches from brushes to sticks in unbelievable. One of the most underrated drummers ever.

  • I spent two weeks in The Big Apple in the summer of '62, and sat three feet from Oscar every night as he gigged at the legendary Basin Street East jazz club with the late great Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums. I was close enough to hear Oscar's voice scat singing his own lines, and Ray Brown singing parallel lines to his solos as well.

  • Great performance but I can hardly hear Ray Brown.

  • First Ed looks at Ray Brown trying to get him to follow the syncopation and then Oscar looks back at Ray. Ray keys in on Ed, Ed smiles briefly as if to say, "You got it now." Ray smiles now that the group is in unison. Crazy power going on here. Best trio ever.

  • is it me, or is it that the way they recorded video had more frames per second back then?

do you see that smoothness? for example at 3:52 when the drummer does his bang bang... looks so different.

  • Have a look at Oscar give a brief instruction to Ray at 1:50, Ray then repeats it to Ed and not one of them miss a single note! What wonderful talent, what wonderful music.

  • @LMatters1 what are the guys communicating?

  • Oh. My. God. This blows my mind.

'Daahoud' was recorded around a few years before this by Phineas Newborn Jr, a pianist who, at his best, was compared to Oscar Peterson. But this version pretty much blows Phineas away.

  • Badass solo from Ray Brown!

  • The man played millions of notes on the piano and not ONE was wrong!

  • And what a treat to see Thigpen!

  • Thanks for the legacy.

  • The best jazz trio ever, in my oppinion.

  • Ray Brown swings effortlessly!

  • what a legend!

  • It is very rewarding and enjoyable for a jazz enthusiast to watch Oscar perform. He was such a wizard on the piano, talented beyond belief. Excellent backup by Ray and Ed also.

  • hi dionara, this tune is called "Daahood" recorded the first time by clifford brown/max roach 5tet. But oscar peterson performs it here at a burning uptempo.

  • @hwlion

    thanks a lot!

    i love fast bebop :)

  • Hi "hwlion" - fabulous tune (actually - who knows why & much too late to ask Brownie - spelled "Daahoud"), recorded by Brown/Roach in '54. A personal favorite, along with "Joy Spring", from the same LP.

A great version of Daahoud was done by the trumpeting superstar 3-some of Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie & Clark Terry, on the LP "Trumpet Summit" (ALSO, as on this blistering version, featuring Oscar Peterson & Joe Pass). That was on Pablo Jazz, which was bought by Fantasy Records in '87.

  • SUPEEEEEEEEEEER

  • Does anyone know the name of the song?

  • Oh my god man this is ridiculous! The syncopation at the beggining is enough man! Yes, Art, Oscar, Thomas (Fats) Waller...absolutely the best in their craft. All respect to Chick Corea, and some of the other REAL jazz players out there.

  • Sounds like a Mambo at 0:52...maybe cause that's what i fell, is pure magic.

  • jazz trio rules for drummers : always begin the song with brushes !!

  • not necessarily

  • your mum

  • i wanna be like him when i grow up

  • Thats Daahoud, real Jazz

  • greatest piano player ever!

  • @oldtealady Tha's my opinion, too!

  • how do you pronounce daa houd?

  • It's pronounced da - ood ("oo" like moon).

  • One of the best jazz clip on Youtube.

    Thank you very much.

  • I love that trasition from brushes to sticks. Wish I could do it that cleanly

  • the bass player and drummer are so handsome

  • oscar the giant.

  • nu ma interseaza ce spun altii ca OSCAR PETERSON NU SE MAI NASTE!!!!!

  • Perfection.

  • It dont get no betta

  • this is really pretty

  • WHAT! Since when did Oscar cover Daahood? I had always wished he had and im so happy to discover that he did. Nothing short of amazing and strangely familiar to how I imagined he would interpret it.

  • It's been a part of his repertoire since the 50s.

  • Longtallsallie is right. Oscar considered Art Tatum an unreachable God. If you want to listen to Oscar's opinion about Art, go listen to his discussion with André Prévin (you'll find it on the site).

  • Super ! j'adore ce trio !

  • i DARE someone to say that oscar is NOT the best there was , is, or will be. you cant top this guy.

  • I think that Oscar Peterson would say that Art Tatum was the best there was :)

  • Of course the "who is the best" makes for good fun and conversation, but there is none. Those mentioned a few posts below can match, but not beat Oscar on his best day.

  • Very funny comments on Brubeck ! The guy basically was never ever able to swing.

Erroll Garner,Tatum, Oscar, Winton Kelly, Sonny Clark, Fats Waller, James P Johnson, Barry Harris, Bud Powell, Horace Silver, Monk, Red Garland, Gene Harris...could all do it (the list should be longer indeed, but I would personnally exclude Bill Evans for the swing...)

  • Don't agree that he was a joke, but I know what this guy means. I've got one of the first educational jazz books from 'round about 1970 where there's a critical essay on Brubeck - basically the guy was not in the same league as other jazz pianists of the same era (like Peterson, Evans, Kelly, Garland) and if you listen to his solos you can hear this. Hey, Miles didn't fight for the guy's services do that must tel you something!

  • THANK YOU!!!!!!!

  • Of course Dave is great, exceptfor fellows like Boris Vian, per=haps the author of the worse book about jazz I' ve ever read!

  • That's SO fast! My hands are hurting just listening to it.

  • Great video. Ray Brown's a legend! Such a strong groove.

viulu11 - Don't be a sap. If Dave Brubeck's playing isn't your thing, fair enough, but on what grounds do you justify calling him a joke?

  • Fabulous - probably the greatest jazz piano player ever, but closely followed by the incredible Monty Alexander and Dave Brubeck.

  • Dave Brubeck is a joke! A few nice harmonies here and there, but he is no match for a real pianist like Oscar or Bill Evans

  • dave brubeck is also a great player. and really different. maybe it is not your taste but please keep this legend respected.

  • I don't have to, do I?

  • Dave Brubeck may not have had the technical brilliance or Peterson, but if that was your grounds for calling him a joke then you'd have missed the point of jazz. Go listen to "time out".

  • how could you exclude Art from that list? Personally, I favor Art though Oscar is on that same level

  • Also art is the only person I have seen that has a sense of humor on the piano....Art is still a crazier pianist than oscar..and I have proof listen to his tiger rag and tea for two..And also I'll refer you to one of his crazy songs called "LOVER" and watch Art go crazy..Art simply does some inhuman things on the piano..What Iam trying to say is that one is more likely to apapt to and master the oscar's style than ART tatum's.

  • oscar is the greatest ever pianist who ever lived.

  • it still sounds so damnded modern

    too good 2 be true

  • Daahoud - this tune separates the men from the boys. Sit back and behold the greatest ever piano trio.

  • I agree with you 100%. Drives me crazy that people still think Art Tatum was the best, although eras were different & without Art, there is no Oscar. Art's music is still jaw dropping, though.

  • I agree too but why ART Tatum is still considered the best is because his style is still considered more superior than oscars...Oscar has the speed no doubt and the stride down pack..But art's sense of harmony is still way more advance than anybody can still comprehend...
