divvy1400yam600, c'mon. Although you made this comment 10 months ago, please get a clue. As Oscar used to say, it's not how many notes someone plays, it's what you DO with those notes. This is brilliant, as advertised, in the style of Oscar. In all fairness, you should rip Art Tatum and all Boogie-Woogie and Be-Bop guys, too.
So here's a question for you. "My Romance". It was done as a beautiful, lush ballad with strings by Doris Day. However, many a Jazz artist (Bill Evans etc) have ripped it up as an upbeat swing tempo. Do you have a right to say it is "in fact a beautiful moody ballad"? Tell me who's interpretation of "My Romance" is correct, in your opinion and then we'll see where you're coming from. Is Bill Evans trying to amuse you? Just playing Devil's advocate.
I am a great admirer of the quality of voice of Doris Day . She overdoes the sugar/happy happy IMO and sang some awful songs. She is also the actress who is the worst 'burster into tears' in the business. So long as she behaved herself she could live next door to me
and make me some apple pie.
If B Evans did play My Romance at high tempo I would be amazed if he injected meanigless arpeggio runs exhibited in the interpretaion here.
I clicked on a vid. but the intro was so turgid I gave up.
OUT-STANDING! LOVE IT!!

I say that the pyrotechnic RH runs add nothing whatsoever to what is in fact a beautiful moody ballad.
This kind of playing is not jazz.
Its just belting round the keyboard for its own sake.
I take my hat off to the pianist in that he can almost manage the runs but I am not amused.
I think he would be a better musician if he injected feeling, shading and restraint into his playing.

For the record, when I play an Oscar Peterson tribute, I don't have the feeling to play like a Bill Evans ballad...
When I play some of my Chopin arrangement I am in the mood of minimalism...
Just a question of situation....
