FUUUUUULLLLLL version, OVER 12-1/2 MINUTES!! I have it accompanying my "Autocad Internal Gear Demo" video. I must hear it a couple times a day. All the others are abbreviated versions. Just don't see how folks can butcher an immortal classic tune.
This version is performed by the Vienna Opera Orchestra which I think appropriate considering the name.
Miliza Corjus has the most beautiful voice. My favorite scene in this full length movie is in the drawing room as she sings the first waltz her guests have heard, which was considered scandalous, as the amazed Strauss plays the piano. The crowd response and her playfulness are amusing and a delight. I played that segnent so many times my videotape broke.
Even tho this may not have been composed as shown here, but it makes an interesting story. I have loved this movie, "The Great Waltz" since my very young years! Even wrote about it in my Open Diary! Lizzy _
what an amazing work of musical genius so simple yet so incredibly beautiful. words hard to describe how amazing this singing of this song is. Milizia is the best strauss waltz singer bar none. perfect tone picth passion and musicality.
Fernand Gravet is the actor who played Strauss. Some camera work in THE GREAT WALTZ is phenomenal - you won't see such quality technique in today's films. Miliza was a great singer and remained active (concerts, recordings, opera) many years after the film.
Wonderful scene..a wonderful singer..and great memories from many years ago, when my Dad took me to see this film..thank you Dad,and thank you barrhavener.
yes, this movie is great, specially this scene. I have the soundtrack on CD (official Release in 2004) but now out of print. Luise Rainer is great too - i have a autograph of her on my "The Great Ziegfeld" DVD cover - signed in fall 2006.
This should be cross referenced to Milizia Korjus. "Korjus, it rhymes with gorgeous," was MGM's publicity line. Allegedly, when L.B. Mayer saw her in Europe he went back and arranged for her to come to the U.S. She arrived many months and many added pounds later. THey had to put her on a diet. She's a terrific singer, though.
Miliza Korjus was a threat to Hollywood diva, Jeanette MacDonald at her height of her popularity then. MGM wanted to popularize operettas, and so they brought in Miliza. Jeanette was said to be "displeasure" about it although she didn't show it upfront. Miliza has a lot of potential to be a great star but she got into an accident and became semi-paralyzed. It is not Hollywood did not welcome her. Hollywood loved her although she made only 1 film.
The soprano is the famous German coloratura Militza Korjus, who made only one film in Hollywood, The Great Waltz. America did not treat her well; The Met did not need her because of the rash of emigrees. She did make a film in Mexico, but a car accident ruined her stage career.
in real life strauss was married 3 times and this movie was only a loose story based on mostly what inspired him to make his music. it is not a 100% accurate bio of his life. His grandfather was Jewish from Hungary relocated to austria. hitler's henchmen tried to dig up his grandfathers grave to erase this Jewishness from strauss' record.
No. Tales from the Vienna Woods was NOT composed while Strauss was on a horse buggy riding through the Wood with his girl friend. That was just Hollywood fantasy.

Singers who believes that they are coloraturas should listen to MILIZA KORJUS to find out what that means.
