I also agree with a lot of you in regards to MA..it is a shame he's not there...BUT..Wolfie is NO joke on the bass..I guess if there is no way MA would come back the best replacement would be EVHs son..now you have Uncle and Nephew holding down the rhythm! Not.too.shabby.
The new VH CD kicks ass..Hagar..Roth..you can go back and forth, and some arguments are valid and fun, but for just the sake of the music, the new CD rips!! Heavy as hell..besides Tattoo of course..I don't mind that song, but it's nothing compared to the rest of the CD..some of their heaviest music ever! IMO
There was much more indecision and confusion than indicated. Roth did leave abruptly and it was more like what Eddie said..."Now what?" Haggar writes in his biography that Eddie Van Halen had contacted Gene Simmons about playing guitar in Kiss, true perhaps, but that gives an indication of how Roth left VH high and dry.
its sad that they seemed like real close friends with sammy, something i dont think they ever will have with dave,i loved the dave stuff ,but sammy was great too.its just diffrent .5150 was a great album.just not in the same way as vh1,1984,diver down etc
According to Dave, he wanted to make a record right away after the 1984 and Monsters of Rock tours were over, but the VH brothers were stalling and weren't in a super hurry. Dave said Ed so hammered and didn't get out of bed for 4 straight days when he showed up to the studio, but here Al says they were in a rush to make the new record and Dave was the one who was stalling it.
It's obvious that Ed felt limited to what DLR could vocally contribute, and his attitude makes him a douche. Sammy brought the additional guitar playing, and the stronger voice no doubt. He may not have been as flamboyant of a frontman as "Dickhead Dave" but the results don't lie. 5150 was their first number 1 record, and musically it is leaps ahead of almost anything they did with DLR.
I have been a VH fan for years, think Eddie and Alex are great etc...but got to say that firing Sammy was BULLSHIT. Dave left and it should have stayed that way.....Van Halen's tours with Sammy, except 2004(because Eddie was drunk and played sloppy), were some of the best sounding rock tours ever!
So wild. Ed's keyboard was powered by a Yamaha 2151 chip that was the main sound chip in the Sega Genesis. Ed's keyboard cost $5000 and a Sega was $250 new.
I love both eras. However, on That Metal Show they argued who was the better frontman, Steven Tyler or Roth. They made a good point about Roth in that his "showmanship" begins to get ridiculous with continuous martial arts stuff and how he would just stand there and you begin to just want them to continue on with the song. Its not as if Sammy had no energy, he was a good frontman, as well, but Sammy knew to sing the damn songs!
Van Halen circa 1986 is a refined, extended version of VH '84 &'85...just with a different singer and a "cleaner" attitude. I think the core of the band really pushed itself to write the songs that were on 5150, and songwriting-wise, it shows regardless of the mixing. I suspect that by 1987-89, the band had changed. Hate to uses this word, but "Incestuous" comes to mind. Don't know why I feel that way but its a feeling I get from listening to the later output...5150 had an edge to it.
I think the fact that "fate" brought Sammy to those guys is key. He's a great fit as a SINGER for that band and is a REAL person, as opposed to Dave. Dave has a good voice, wild personality and karate skills.
I love both Van Halens but I'm starting to prefer the one with the more inspirational lyrics and vibe of a bunch of guys who really like and respect each other.
That's 20 shit head pimply teens that never knew the real Van Halen...I hope now you all look back at this video and see what a bunch of retards you were praising Sammy and dissing David...
5150 Was A Fantastic Album! I Think It Followed "1984" Very Well...It Still Had That Party Hard Van Halen Sound, But Anything After That Was A Complete Departure From The Original Van Halen Sound...Starting With: "OU812"

ROth die hard fans have a hard time letting Hagar into their LIKING CIRCLE :D They became a different bad, not for the better or for the worse, just different. I like alot of Hagar and Roth song-

Diver Down-5 cover songs. I didn't even want to listen to that album. Wasn't even excited about the release of 1984. Van Hagar was too soft, but better than cover songs. I still don't understand why they had to even put You Really Got Me on the first vinyl. They should have never done cover songs.
I never really hated the Roth years of Van Halen, but I didn't much care for the fact that Dave was more about putting on a good show than doing good music either. Don't get me wrong though, I do like the stuff they did during the early years, but I just don't love it. But hey, that's MY opinion.
It wasnt even rock and roll with sam in there, it was bubblegum poprock catering to the gays and the female tendency types. Thank god Daves back!!!! Rock on!
this was a great time to be a VH fan, they were kicking ass on all kinds of levels and were having a great time doing this, just awsome stuff. I literally watched this thing for about 2 years straight everyday and can still probably do 90% of it word for word..lol.
while i like eddie's tone from the roth era (the new tone is too overdriven), the music from the sammy hagar era is some of the most instrumental shit in the world, it's better because no one's under pressure.
They can give three shits about anyone, and that's what makes them so good.
I have to agree. To be honest if you're a true Van Halen fan then I think you have to love both the Dave and Sammy eras.
And whoever says the slight change in style was all down to Sammy obvious can't hear properly; in this video Eddie and others clearly say that they felt no longer constrained to what they could do musically after Dave left. If Dave had been different, the chances are songs such as 'Why Can't This Be Love' would have surfaced anyway.
@5150UK Bullshit, Van Halen's balls left when Dave did. There's no ''if you're a true fan", that's garbage. You can love Van Hagar all you want, and you have every right to, but I think they're crap without Dave. The magic of Van Halen is the combination of these four dysfunctional individuals, they can find other singers to fill in and whatever, but its not Van Halen without Roth.
@MrBooBooCat So would you say that the band today is truely Van Halen'? What about Mike? His background vocals are an integral part of the Van Halen sound, regardless of era, and are sorely missed along with his cheeky stage persona. Wolfie is no doubt talented, but he isn't Mike!
@5150UK Exactly, I said that the magic of VH (the real VH) was the combination of these FOUR individuals, meaning obviously Dave, Mike, Ed and Alex. I don't consider the current lineup a ''reunion'' or anything of that matter. It's nonsense that Michael isn't in the band.
that was a really gay move that dave did. No offense but vanhagar was not rock. I dont like any of sammy's songs, eds playing wasnt as good. it looked like sammy did guitar and ed did keyboard more, weird. anyways glad dave is back and now they are van halen!
This is when Van Halen stopped being "the mighty VH" and became the rock version of Air Supply....thank God Dave has returned and made VH legitimate again.
