I would always watch this movie as a kid .. so wonderfully done :) Especially since Lir is an honest guy speaking his heart, not being horrendously glorified
This movie is aired in television in Germany everytime around christmas. My father and me watched it when i was - i dont know - 5 years old? Im nearly 23 now and he still watches it with me when i get home on christmas :')
I agree with those who've said Lir's imperfect singing is what makes this for me.
Lir was never a hero before she came to him, of course he can't sing perfectly. Most people can't. But he's willing to try anything to win her heart over. I think it's sweet of him to try.
I love the line where he sings, "I'm not a man of poetry, music isn't one with me... it runs from me..."
I was born in 1995 but thankfully for my moms respect for movies I grew up on movies like this. She told me that I was always obsssed with this one especially. It was just so different! I'll never forget it.
I think the fact that Lir doesn't sing perfectly makes this song so much sweeter, he desperately in love with Amalthea and wants to prove it to her by any means. He finally wins her over when he's being true and straight-forward, not when he's trying to impress her. ^_^
I FREAKIN' LOVE this movie! It's funny, that I have long blonde hair and my boyfriend has reddish hair, too. We both can sing....................I vision us as Amalthea and Lear!! LOL
The instrumentals in this song are beautiful; I love the reprises of the melody in later scenes (Lir taking the noble path and telling Amalthea that they can't just abandon the quest for love, and when the unicorn brings Lir back to life). But the words need a little reworking. And the last two chords the singers create are torture to anyone who has had any sort of musical training/instruction! Though I'm not sure if it's because of the notes or the singers.
ive owned the book and the movie as many years as i can remember i just got the movie again and i havent even opened it thats how much i love this movie and one day book im also a fan of peter s beagle gen_s6@hotmail.com
@XLolitaxholleighX Me, too. I wish Amalthea and Lir could've been together, too, but the endings in the book and the movie are more fitting to the story.
I love this movie, I love the couple, and I feel in love with the innocence of this movie. That and I love the graphics and I wish I had this on blu-ray.
@LadyLuna1 What graphics? This was made in the 1980s on a tight budget. Not saying the animation isn't good; just pointing out that even Disney wasn't using a lot of graphics for their movies in those days simply because it didn't quite exist.
I'm probably the only one who feels this way, but I always wanted Amalthea to fall in love with Schmendrick...Prince Lir is cool, but I felt I didn't get to know him well enough in the movie...I guess I'm weird lol xD
Ever since I came across this, I have really began to love this song and wont stop playing it over and over. I thank you for uploading this even though I haven't watched the actual movie.
@CassiePinkPearl Oh, you should definitely watch the whole movie if you get the chance. It has a really timeless feel to it and despite the deceptive title, can be enjoyed by people of all ages. Its right up there with Miyazaki.
@AlishmcMalish You kill the beauty of the original. you know, before you lived in this robotic future of autotune and bad actors with voice overs. At least the same people that did the dialogue did the singing to. This is true talent, and it sounds awesome. Then again, why do you people show up just to put something more valuable than yourself down? I shall never know.
My step mother and I shared many wonderful nights together watching this movie, and crying each time! Since her passing I watch it now, and feel close to her again. I will always love this movie, as I will always love her~ I miss you
I sing this to myself from time to time. Grew up on the book and later as a young adult enjoyed the film. My version is a little different though.... Faded memory changes lyrics...
I love this movie with all my heart, since I can think. But i NEVER knew that it was Jeff Bridges singing. My affection toward this wonderful and talented actor just grew stronger...
@kflze You sure it's Jeff Bridges singing? If I had a nickel for every animated character who had 2 voices in the same movie (one for singing, one for speaking), I'd own a Porsche. Or at least a really fast motorcycle.
@ztslovebird Actually it is Jeff Bridges. I just looked it up. The only time when they had a different singer is Amalthea for this song because it was impossible with Mia Farrow (they compensated for her in "Now That I'm a Woman" by flatting the instruments several times - it couldn't work for a duet, so they got Katie Irving.)
@tone143: In this song, that isn't Mia Farrow singing. For the original soundtrack they have another woman singing both "Now that I'm a Woman" and the duet "That's all i've got to say". When they made the animated movie, they'd originally wanted to cut Mia Farrow's version of "Now that I'm a Woman" out because she sounded so awful, but in an effort to lengthen the movie put her version back in, but didn't change the duet. The soundtrack version of "Now that I'm a Woman" is MUCH MUCH better.
She was the last unicorn; all the others had been captured. If she'd stayed on as a woman, that would have been the end of the unicorns. Thus, she sacrifices her chance to remain as a woman in order to save the entire unicorn species. She is, according to the film, the only unicorn that has ever experienced true love. And she remembers it.
There are some mature themes in this book, reflected pretty faithfully in the movie - The ways that people cope with knowledge of their own mortality is the biggest one, maybe; every character reacts to the unicorn in a reflection of their dreams & fears - but another is the lightning-strike quality of spiritual transcendence & sudden grace - hence, "Magic, do as you will!" -
The most sacred things are out of reach, maybe that's the point - we can't have them, only contemplate them -
She always ticked me off when she wanted to stay human!!!! I'm like "seriously!!! U r a mythical, beautiful, immortal creature and u want to be an imperfect being?!" Stupid chick....
maybe the concept was about what we settle for in life, knowing our limitations - Amalthea at that point is mortal, winding down the elapsed time of her mortal life, just trying to avoid painful thoughts of what she's apparently lost forever, & to find some kind of freedom from loneliness, some little creature-comfort - think of an elderly person trying not to dwell on all they've lost, to enjoy the moments of the day, to do what they still can - so, pathos maybe -
@SupernalOne yeah but she has forgotten herself.. She says "drown out my dreams, keep me from remembering what wants me to remember it." and again "Molly, who am I, what am I searching for in this place day after day? I knew a moment ago but I've forgotten." "I'm no unicorn no magical creature, I'm human and I love you" She doesn't know what she is...she has forgotten and it ticks me off. I'm sooooo glad she turned back in the end.
I turn into a romantic sap every time I hear this one--great Jimmy Webb ballad. When I first heard it,I cringed a coupla times at Bridges' pitch--but now,I think it was the right choice to have him sing it,and not a pro--has a certain vulnerability to it.Mia Farrow sounds great--it's funny she hasn't released a few albums--or did I miss them?
@ztslovebird I can see why you would want that for them, but, I like it better this way :) She's an unicorn and she accomplished her mission, now she can live with the other unicorns. Better than just a romance. It's less cliché than the usual romantic childhood movie, which is why I like this movie better. I sometimes I see so many movies in which love is always perfect and the key to all answers...this is more realistic. Way more.
@Romanee92 Read the book. Peter S. Beagle wrote that unicorns were solitary creatures, rarely travelling together and the places where unicorns mated were supermagical places. So, after everything was said and done, the unicorn went back to living on her own watching other creatures grow old and die while King Lir tried to make up for his adopted father's mistakes while looking for his unicorn on the side.
@ztslovebird I haven't read the book, but I assume you are right, lol. However, my point was more that I liked it that she didn't stay human and married Lir, for it would have been a cliché end to this beautiful movie, in reponse to your comment that you would like her to have done that. I wasn't stating facts or anything. Just my opinion, in reponse to your opinion XD
I love this movie since I was a kid, always thought that forbidden loves were romatic, but now that Im older i'm seeing its not as sweet as i thought...lol none the less, its a beautiful story...
@LizVasquez21, I was involved in a childhood forbidden love and because it was forbidden it didn't work out. I still believe that forbidden loves can be romantic, but unfortunately reality gets in the way of it becoming a permanent committed love that lasts a lifetime.
i'm just a girl... and Leigh Bowery is the unicorn... i have changed tho in the past few years to the point that sometimes... in strange funky moments...i cannot tell myself apart from Leigh... hee hee hee (welcome home "mama")... if i had a "prince charming"... it'd be Eminem for sure
reality is a funky strange thing... but gosh i sure do love Eminem AND Leigh Bowery; in different ways tho
They just don't make movies like this (for kids) anymore. Most of the stuff out today is junk. This movie is more than a simple little story about a unicorn. Even adults can watch this movie and get something from it. Both the soundtrack and story are beautiful.
I will forever hold this movie in my heart... It brings back so many memories...
@missprissm - they never really made movies like this back in the day either. Peter S. Beagle's book simply touched too many of us for this to never be made into a movie. This is a stand alone piece of brilliance.
@missprissm I grew up on this thing! My nieces and nephews all watch it and LLOOVVEE it and when we go to a movie they are all like "I think the Unicorn is better"....I have awesome nieces a nephews, just so ya know.
@AlishmcMalish This is a song about true love. There's hardly any decent songs today that speak this deeply. Maybe once you find a lover you will understand the beauty of REAL music like this.
Love this movie and this song! I really love Lir singing, why can't men do stuff like this anymore? I mean really? I like the singing in the last Unicorn. But i really like Amalthea's voice. She's so pretty and sweet. XD I wish unicorns were real and looked like her! I would be super excited! lol
I would wish upon a star for that wish!
Thank u for posting this up to watch! You deserve an award and 200 millions trophies! :)
I love the guy's singing (he tries hard but not too hard which would make his voice sound bad, he just does well with the voice he has) and definitely love the woman's singing. I'd melt if a guy sang to me like this xD hahah.
One of the reasons I love this movie is because they didn't spend thousands of dollars hiring professional singers to sing the songs, but keep the voice actors voices. This is also the reason I love Lady and the Tamp and can't stand Snow White.
SIGH!!! It's soo romantic!! I agree! Why can't more men sing like this??? sigh- I love this movie!! It is my all time favorite!!! IT's amazing and so wonderful! Compared to the crappy movies made today, including some of kid's movies! The art is beautiful, the voices are perfect, the story is bittersweet! It's absolutely perfect
Trouble me please trouble me. I love how the princess sings she has such a beautiful voice. It's a shame she didn't start to sing until the song is near the end.
I'm confused...you can definitely tell it's two different voice actors when she's singing this song and when she's singing "Now That I'm A Woman"....this one definitely has a softer and sweeter voice...weird.
@Greenified I'll help explain to the best of my knowledge. Believe it or not, its really the same person (Mia Farrow) who sings both those parts in the movie. I think the reason why she sounds off-key at first is, because she was trying to set a mood. She's lost, alone and depressed. I would not expect someone to sound beautiful, in they're darkest hour. But its when this song hits and when she finds herself she sings like an angel. In short "continuity"
@Greenified Ok my bad, you were right, after look it up and it is a different voice. I believe its Katie Irving, she also sang in the soundtrack of this movie. Sorry for throwing you off. :(
the trouble is girls will overlook the stumbling but earnest Prince Lears of this world until it is too late when they no longer have songs to sing having sung them in vain to girls chasing after guys who would never sing or do anything special for them.
Das ist so wunderschön..

I still wish Amalthea could've turned back into a human and married Liir.
ztslovebird 1 year ago
@ztslovebird I can see why you would want that for them, but, I like it better this way :) She's an unicorn and she accomplished her mission, now she can live with the other unicorns. Better than just a romance. It's less cliché than the usual romantic childhood movie, which is why I like this movie better. I sometimes I see so many movies in which love is always perfect and the key to all answers...this is more realistic. Way more.
Romanee92 1 year ago 2
@Romanee92 Read the book. Peter S. Beagle wrote that unicorns were solitary creatures, rarely travelling together and the places where unicorns mated were supermagical places. So, after everything was said and done, the unicorn went back to living on her own watching other creatures grow old and die while King Lir tried to make up for his adopted father's mistakes while looking for his unicorn on the side.
ztslovebird 1 year ago 2
@ztslovebird I haven't read the book, but I assume you are right, lol. However, my point was more that I liked it that she didn't stay human and married Lir, for it would have been a cliché end to this beautiful movie, in reponse to your comment that you would like her to have done that. I wasn't stating facts or anything. Just my opinion, in reponse to your opinion XD

I LOVE this film!!!
SO MAGICAL =D

Prince Lear is a knob, but he's sweet. I guess that's gotta count for something, right?

definitely on of the most awesome movies ever made :3

Jeff Bridges has a nice singing voice. I'd like to hear him try this in Tron Legacy. XD

I love this movie since I was a kid, always thought that forbidden loves were romatic, but now that Im older i'm seeing its not as sweet as i thought...lol none the less, its a beautiful story...
LizVasquez21 1 year ago 14
@LizVasquez21, I was involved in a childhood forbidden love and because it was forbidden it didn't work out. I still believe that forbidden loves can be romantic, but unfortunately reality gets in the way of it becoming a permanent committed love that lasts a lifetime.

so, was this a dysney movie?
Meer65466 1 year ago
@Meer65466 Nope. I'm not sure which company made it, but I know it wasn't Disney.
Aventura459 1 year ago
@Aventura459 and i kinda noticed that like, its almost like anime. and not disney. idk.
Meer65466 1 year ago
@Aventura459 Rankin Bass did the animation. They also did The Hobbit and Return of the King.

i'm just a girl... and Leigh Bowery is the unicorn... i have changed tho in the past few years to the point that sometimes... in strange funky moments...i cannot tell myself apart from Leigh... hee hee hee (welcome home "mama")... if i had a "prince charming"... it'd be Eminem for sure
reality is a funky strange thing... but gosh i sure do love Eminem AND Leigh Bowery; in different ways tho
JeSuisMonAmiPourTu 1 year ago
They just don't make movies like this (for kids) anymore. Most of the stuff out today is junk. This movie is more than a simple little story about a unicorn. Even adults can watch this movie and get something from it. Both the soundtrack and story are beautiful.
I will forever hold this movie in my heart... It brings back so many memories...

I absolutely agree.
Loved as a child, i watched it every christmas evening...
Such a beautiful movie. Now i'm 22 but it still makes my cry

@missprissm - they never really made movies like this back in the day either. Peter S. Beagle's book simply touched too many of us for this to never be made into a movie. This is a stand alone piece of brilliance.

I agree. It's all DreamWorks CGI bullshit nowadays and soda corporate sponsors ... lame
ninjacarm 11 months ago
@missprissm I grew up on this thing! My nieces and nephews all watch it and LLOOVVEE it and when we go to a movie they are all like "I think the Unicorn is better"....I have awesome nieces a nephews, just so ya know.
SunshineMariah 10 months ago 4
@missprissm Personally I find it to be rather slow, shallow, boring tripe. Which is how they still are today. And I loved this movie as a kid.
AlishmcMalish 7 months ago
@AlishmcMalish This is a song about true love. There's hardly any decent songs today that speak this deeply. Maybe once you find a lover you will understand the beauty of REAL music like this.
PhoenixenRiven 3 months ago

Thanks for uploading!
Serasia 1 year ago
One of the reasons I love this movie is because they didn't spend thousands of dollars hiring professional singers to sing the songs, but keep the voice actors voices. This is also the reason I love Lady and the Tamp and can't stand Snow White.
mytheiya 1 year ago
EmeraldArtemisia 1 year ago
Trouble me please trouble me. I love how the princess sings she has such a beautiful voice. It's a shame she didn't start to sing until the song is near the end.
twilightwindwaker 1 year ago
I'm confused...you can definitely tell it's two different voice actors when she's singing this song and when she's singing "Now That I'm A Woman"....this one definitely has a softer and sweeter voice...weird.
Greenified 1 year ago
@Greenified I'll help explain to the best of my knowledge. Believe it or not, its really the same person (Mia Farrow) who sings both those parts in the movie. I think the reason why she sounds off-key at first is, because she was trying to set a mood. She's lost, alone and depressed. I would not expect someone to sound beautiful, in they're darkest hour. But its when this song hits and when she finds herself she sings like an angel. In short "continuity"
hope I was helpful, I love this movie
TheGreatGodot 1 year ago
@Greenified Ok my bad, you were right, after look it up and it is a different voice. I believe its Katie Irving, she also sang in the soundtrack of this movie. Sorry for throwing you off. :(
TheGreatGodot 1 year ago
the trouble is girls will overlook the stumbling but earnest Prince Lears of this world until it is too late when they no longer have songs to sing having sung them in vain to girls chasing after guys who would never sing or do anything special for them.
