Playing this. It's not as hard as I thought it would be (Easier than the prelude for sure), but is presenting enough of a challenge for an intermediate cello player such as myself.
@BenMurrie I was asking the room he is playing in. But now I realized he is playing every suit in another room of a chapel (?), church or a museum (whatever) not every movement. Pardon me...
He plays well this is the important point I think. :)
@nequillim Well then quit bragging about how amazing you are in comparison to how bad he is; you've just made yourself look totally ignorant and rather stupid.
@nequillim Fine, prove it. Upload a video of you, sat on the toilet, performing this piece on your cello. I seriously doubt you'll be as amazing as you claim to be.
I'm starting this piece over the Summer holidays and I found this really helpful, thanks! Is it just me, or did he play the last note slightly off and then slide onto it?
@nequillim Well, we can't wait to be enlightened. Can you point us to your recordings? Any live performance coming up? Considering how good you claim to be, if it's not already sold out, it surely will be an edifying experience.
The book I have with this in it has no fingering suggestions, and I play it mostly in 1st position (shifting when its necessary (e on the A string for example) or when its easier) is that wrong?
@kungfudancin No it isn't wrong, it's not technically easier though...my teacher is making me play this using the lest amount of open A (or A string) and 1st p.as possible, if you want try playing it using mostly 3rd, 2nd, 4th, and 1/2 position, like instead of the open D in the pick up use your 2nd finger in 3rd p. on the G string and continue, by not playing all in 1st p.it makes it easier to play notes like the E on A without sifting all the way down. hope this helped a little :)
@claff564 To be honest, cello suite no.1 is relatively easy (all movements.) If you want a real challenge, try cello suite no. 6. Any movement from that one will give you a run for your money. ;)
I hate how everyone keeps saying in the comment on these videos of this mans playing that he looks like Jesus. He is an awesome cellist, let's keep it to that. I dont care about his apperence, just his playing. By the way, how do you know for sure what Jesus looked like?
I'm from Ireland, and I play traditional Irish fiddle, as well as classical trumpet.
What I love about this piece especially is that it really shows how a "jig" and a "gigue", aside from being pronounced almost the same, are also basically the same in form and sound. This could well be a tune you'd hear some old fella in the back of an Irish pub playing...
okay, well, whether or not you think he looks like Jesus doesn't matter; he plays cello incredibly. no matter what he looks like. i'm learning this piece (adapted for viola) and this is so inspiring. i wish i could play this way...
but, @rvs1, i don't wish to get into a theological debate with you, but it's pretty hard to deny that Jesus walked on this earth as a man of flesh. whether you believe he is who he says he is...well, that's up to you. but most archaeologists agree that there was a m
Very nicely done! Good dance-like character. I recently learned this on electric bass and posted a youtube video of my playing. I transposed it to D major to better suit the standard tuned 4 string bass. I try to use hammer-ons, pull-offs and slides to imitate the cello bow on the slurs.
try throwing your fingers down on the fingerboard to make them clear. also try playing with your bow closer to the bridge. it tends to give a move rich sound and its easier to use less bow in all peices
I had to play part of this for an audtion once. On flute, though... It's a good piece, but a little fast when you have to learn it along with two other pieces, two pieces for a different audtion, music for a concert, and all major and minor scales for a high school audition.
YouTube is my favorite practice tool. You can find so many recordings of the same piece and so many different styles. It just gives you so many ideas!
Man. My trombone professor is having me play this. It's a lot harder when one is required to breathe...A fun movement of the suites, but tough because I'm trying to figure out and imitate the bowings.
@IITajann Jesus was a jewish character in an ancient fantasy book, how would anybody know how he looked like if this Jesus was just a imaginary role in a book?
@soccer7777 When you see him at that age, he looks like Jesus, when you see him at his actual age you think you are watching GOD itself, and far from wrong...
@elitist08 apparently i have never consider statement "he looks like jesus" as a joke of any sort and if you find that inelligent joke well... depends of your inelligance

Play almost right on the fingerboard and loosen your bow grip.

Its just 16th notes. He's just playing somewhat fast, so it seems like he's 'slurring,' but he's actually just trying to keep time.
