I think Tori has a fascination with tragic airplane deaths ...."Can't see New York, "Not the Red Baron" and Spring Haze (JFK jr's demise). All of these songs stir up terrible images of airplane victims in my head for some reason.
I guess too, but she has even gone to Tel Aviv in Israel and Rumania and other countries in the Estearn Europe, where I thought she diodn't sell that much either. Could you see her in her Sinful Attraction 2009 tour?
@Doylefromhell. It's not. It's Marcel van Limbeek and Rob van Tuin, her engineers, speaking to each other in Dutch. You can hear her dad at the beginning of Happiness is a Warm Gun on Strange Little Girls.
I read somewhere this song was about AIDS. "Another pilot down" represents victims and the red baron is AIDS. "Girls with red ribbons" meaning the symbolic ribbon.
Thank you so mucho for posting this. This is also one of my favourite songs of hers and I'd never seen her perform it live. It seems to be one of the "rare ones" for her. It doesn't "come up to her" as usual as others.
Last 11 September, she palyed this song in her concert in London. It was absolutely amazaing and it seemed she was really crying. After performing the song, she had to stop a second, with her hands on her eyes, before starting with Ophelia. That London concert was so full of 'rare' songs: Hotel, mr. Zebra, Virginia, and Not the Red Baron... Fantastic!!!
Fuck man, what you told me makes me so evnious and also moves me. Such great songs. And she's never come (and it seems that she's never coming) to South America.
No? How strange, she goes even to Australia and New Zealand... Anyway, the first time I saw her was in Milan in 2001, at the time of her Strange Little Girl tour. However, that was her first time in Italy since 1991! After that, she's been playing in Milan and Rome regularly. I don't know how she plans her tours; I guess it depends by the sales (I mean, she plays in those countries where she sells more CDs, just to be sure that the gigs will be packed and not to waste money... I guess).
I thought this song was about her breakup with a boyfriend because on the cd you hear a man talking before the words start, just always felt it was about a breakup
holy shit i never get tired of hearing this whut ever happend to tori though is she still around..?!? man she is amazing depressing as all hell though but wonderfull
Of course there are many valid interpretations to the song, but according to Tori:
"Not the Red Baron is the moment of compassion for all the men on the record. It's where I could see their planes crashing, I could see that they have a side too. And if their planes would crash I stared to gain compassion for their side of it."
Not sure if I read this or if it's my own take (been a while since my Tori phase) but I think the song is about second-hand tragedy, hearing about a young gay man dying of AIDS, but not someone known personally.
Beautiful, beautiful song. I like the album cut better, because of the sound-booth chatter in the beginning. It reminds me of negotiating with overseas operators to make international phone calls, the few of which I have made being quite depressing.
I agree with you this is, IMO, her most beautiful song. It isn't the most devastating or the most cerebral, but that's what makes it so sincere. She's singing about who knows what (Snoopy?), and it just floors me every time.
i don't think it's her most beautiful song - that award goes to anything on CHOIR GIRL - but it is the prettiest thing on BOYS - i love that album it's way under praised by critics - BOYS FOR PELE that is
I agree completely. Floors me too, each time. She mentions "Judy G" (Judy Garland) and some other indirect Gay references...since it's about a friend of a friend who dies of aids in the early 90's. Many there "no s'girls with red ribbons".... which, I think is a reference to Flying Dutchman (Dutch accent) "s'girls (the girls).
What a masterpiece! This is my favourite Tori song. It reminds me of when I was "down in the flames" and I kept telling me that it was all because of someone I did not "really know".
"not the red baron" is one of the rare Tori one take wonders. She started getting feadback into the sound booth of the techs talking and she told them to continue recording, they asked if they wanted her to speak in english and she says "No Dutch" The first recording ever is the one on the CD.
@sadieprater I know that your comment is an older one but I wanted to thank you for explaining this story. I just got into her music about 5 months ago and I've always wondered the story behind the very beginning of this song. I knew Marianne was a one-take wonder. Are there any others that you know of?
Absolutely wonderful - the atmosphere, her incredible voice, the great performance and especially the piano intro! Thx for sharing this amazing video with us!
A good piece.

Wow...what an amazing piano intro!
And the way she sings the second rendition of "taking them to the flames" and bends her voice downward is just so heartbreaking.
