Followed Maynard from Kenton in '52 and '53, Birdland up until his untimely passing. One of the greatest. Every group he ever had simply MOVED. Never a bad performance. We miss you boss.
Maynard was my idol for many years. Got to see him live a couple of times. This tune "Give It One" came out in the early 1970s on the album called (MF HORN 2). The previous album had MacArthur Park (MF HORN 1).
Thank you for this! During the time he lived in this country I saw him fifteen times with his British formed band. After he moved back to his home across the pond he came back here to the Wigan Jazz Festival every summer for several years & fortunately I saw him there too. A marvellous man & though many have copied his style, he was the greatest. R.I.P.
Oh man ... one of my absolute favorite MF tracks. Saw the man live 7 times over the years, going back to his British bands. The most turbocharged sound I ever experienced. He was indeed one of a kind. Thanks for this posting. - Jeff
The first track in here "Give It One" was used in the original Wheel of Fortune pilot. I would love to hear the awe-inspiring "Scheherazade" with its dico feel from the New Vintage album featuring the trumpet on ice cover on YouTube which was heard on the old World Wide Wrestling Federation syndie show "Championship Wrestling" with a young Vince McMahon on play-by-play. God rest the soul of Maynard Ferguson. He was awesome!
Nice text terjer. Sheherazade is also one of my favourites. Did you know that Alan downey, maynard's british lead and composer of Give It One died shortly before Maynard? A sad omen it turned out to be.
hommage à MF - un des plus grand trompettiste de tous les temps - son timbre et sa puissance sont uniques ! Un dieu qui aura marqué le monde de la musique
He was a sensational trumpet player, and I still love his version of Gonna Fly Now. What an excellent musician he was, and he is sorely missed. Thank you for this tribute.
Thank you to all those that have viewed and/or commented on this tribute to Maynard. I would have never dreamed that it would receive over 10,000 views (and counting)! I'm flattered and honored, but more important it was just a way to share what I loved about him and his music after I learned of his passing. Thanks one and all! May you continue to enjoy this tribute in good health!
What is the name of the chart that is playing behind the pictures. I know that it was on the same original album that Macarthur Park was on but I cannot remember the name and I no longer have that album.
Maynard I miss ya I have seen you over 20 times and I miss ya man! Tell Lisa to make that film about him! We need to have it! God Bless you for these great tribute about Maynard!. I love the "maynard roll" which many artists like EW and Fire and Toto and many others incorporated thanks to the GENIUS of Maymard's INCREDIBLE playing. I play piano and some horn too and he was truly a great man and legend who will be greatly missed. God Bless You!
I first heard him on Stan Kenton's album "This Is An Orchestra."

Maynards tone is so lethally accurate. That rising gadget in Give it One is pure perfection, Coming down is true as well. MF was brilliant genius.
