  • Dream Theater is not a band. DT is a bar, where the greatest musicians in the world get drunk and jam

  • i was having a good practice on my bass tonight..... and then i watched this.

  • Myung fingered a girl once. The finger was larger than his penis.

  • there are 2 parts of this song.. which part is this from?

  • @sum16kwt Metropolis Pt. 1 - The Miracle and The Sleeper, its off the Images and Words album :)

  • Bass level : Asian !!

  • 26 people do not know music

  • hey duudes, for those who want to learn this at a nice pace, check out my channel. you CAN use a 4 string for it as well. but besides that, this is insane. I have no idea how he does this without ever fucking up

  • identical as in studio

  • You cut the video in the best part!

  • Bassception.

  • I don't see how you can call that a "solo within a solo", I mean its just excessive tapping..

  • @sheitruis

It's quite easy to play. But what makes a good solo? Does it sound good? Yes, I think it does. Does it fit well in the song. I think it's a nice change and it is also quite unexpected. It doesn't matter what technique you use. As long as it fits and doesn't sound out of place.

  • @sheitruis

    That's kind of a meme : watch?v=EVJ2zbGmMAI

  • @sheitruis it not a solo in a solo in another video he acidently sais i play a bass solo in metropolis where i play a bass solo

  • bah chino culiao penka

  • john myung can be the keyboard player if jordan rudess is absent for the practice

  • that bass solo made that guitar solo right after look like some water on the side..

  • he plays off everything so casually. i wish to be that cool and good that day.

  • que frase linda

  • This isnt the metropolis solo, this is the dance of instrumentals solo.

  • @mongostrings eh, nop, this is metropolis solo...

  • press 0 right before 11 seconds for an endless loop

  • Comment removed

  • Bass solo within the bass solo...crazy!

  • Instrumedley rox!

  • this is actually a part of the song

  • @MrUnforgiven066 You think?

  • @MrUnforgiven066 Thanks Captain Obvious, I would have never guessed that!

  • @MrUnforgiven066 So it can't be a solo because it's part of the song? Teh fuck? So then guitarists can't solo either because it's part of the song...

  • Title should be:

"A bass solo from the song Metropolis where John Myung plays a bass solo"

  • @napischu "A bass solo from the song Metropolis where John Myung plays a bass solo playing with band called Dream Theater"

  • My ears had been raped

  • I think Dream Theater really showed and helped people appreciate bass guitar.

It's a major part of any band but a lot of them don't show it like this...

  • @LaNinjette If you really want to appreciate the bass, listen to some Primus!

  • fantastic!

  • just awesome!

  • why so much hurry?

  • And THAT's how you play a bass solo in a bass solo.

  • @digitalfreak123

Haha, you really look like a dumbass :)

All I said is true, sorry if you know nothing about these notions ;)

  • @Blacksplayer it's bass being played almost unaccompanied where the bass is taking the lead role in the music being played. Whether or not you personally enjoy something is not a contributing factor to something being a solo or not.

  • @Blacksplayer u deserve to die!

  • @Blacksplayer Why dont you try to do it?

  • Those first 2 notes John hits makes him sound like a total noob.

  • @DavidWoodMusic the last 2000 notes makes up for it

  • That was bonerific. Which concert was this from?

  • @Herreken Live at Budokan

  • @SquallOrnitier Ha! I have that one. I haven't watched it in years. Thanks.

  • i didn't like that very much at all

  • And THAT's how you put a bass solo in a bass solo.

  • Anyone agree the drums and guitar should be quieter in the solo.

  • the 18 people don't like this video are bassist who can't play it..!

    lol

    Thumbs Up

  • @XaviOrtega1 lol that`s so true.... but i still can't dislike ¬¬

  • This is the bass solo where he does a bass solo.

  • how can people dislike this? i know someone will say ''PEOPLE ARE ENTITLED TO OPINIONS YOU GAYLORD''

but this is like god's gift of a bass solo!!!

    it's amazing!

  • what is the name of this song??

  • @jony1987drums ...Metropolis

  • It's named Metropolis, from Dream Theater's album Images And Words it's the fifth track and the bass solo is in the 5:35..!

  • Still cant really hear it fully

  • he can play this solo while sleeping

  • MUSICAL MASTRUBATION!!! :D:D

  • is he playing on a yamaha there !!??

  • @themightygermanman Not sure, but I can tell that before using Music Man basses he used Yamaha, you can find that in several videos of whenever they were recording different albums.

  • @themightygermanman

Its a Yamaha Prototype RBX2JM. He's had two signature models, a RBX2JM, and the previous model, a RBX6JM. Both are alder bodies, but the 6JM Model had a 35" scale, two pickups, onboard EQ, and a cool infinity inlay. The 2JM went down to 1 pickup, vol/pickup selection, limited EQ, 34" scale, solid gray finish, and yin-yang inlay.

  • @MetalKen But i prefer the Ernie Ball Musicman Bongo 6 String..! i love the sound and the model was designed by BMW Engineers...!

  • Damn lookit his hand muscles

  • no doubt myung can do a fucking long solo at fuciking fast speed way better than that

  • He is Such A Wickered Bassist FACT!!!!!!!

  • se escucha la raja el solo en el budokan

  • Un dios

  • i'm currently trying to learn this xP

  • @themisterpieguy Need help? Learned it a while ago and it wasn't easy XD

  • @Meteorotaki

    Its soooo sexy

  • @DzagielAreq

I'm not sure about it, but the Yamaha bass, JP 2003 haircut, and what looks like a rip from a DVD, I guess this is from the live at Budokan DVD

  • Anyone know what bass he's playing?

  • @hereawhile

this is his signature Yamaha RBX JM2 in inca silver color

  • This isn't metropolis pt1 it's instrumedley pt 1

  • Where's the rest of this video? (Give me a link!)

  • @WoWintosh youtube.com/watch?v=2eLsoH2GrfQ

  • This is probably the model of a perfect bass solo. It stops the song dead in its tracks and says: "Hey you! Yes you! Look at me! I am God! Fall to your knees and worship me!... Ok I'm done now."

  • @ZachValkyrie, you're so right about that! Bass almost never gets the respect it deserves, so when it does, it's quite nice! Also, LOL! ;)

  • go john! Goooo!!!!

  • louder!!!!it is so amazing!!1

  • @TheLastVoid Then again, food poisoning utterly destroys the voice. I know for a fact he hasn't fully recovered, simply listen to Black Clouds and Silver Linings right after hearing Metropolis. Hundreds of people bash LaBrie for being lame, but man...he's a trooper.

  • That's Instrumedly, right? The part that came before this solo was a fragment from The Dance of Eternity.

  • @Tomaxzo I don't know if you had your question answered by now, but that's right, it is the Instrumedley

  • Myung is awesome!

  • Ogni volta che ascolto questo fantastico solo è sempre una grandissima emozione,John sei il migliore in assoluto!

  • amazing

  • Ah, yes. The bass solo in which John Myung plays a bass solo. Spectacular, isn't it?

  • @facePuncher5 Lol'd, hard.

  • This is from the Instrumedley of the Live in Budokan. =D

  • la mejor banda del mundo

  • dream theater es el grupo con los musicos mas talentosos que he visto.

en guitarra petrucci, myung en el bajo, rudess teclados y portnoy en la bateria puros colosos de la musica!! exelente grupooooo!! =)

  • dream theater has the god of blowjob, lol

  • dream theater has the god of drums , the god of keyboards , and the god of basses lm/

  • @gaussman08 and the god of guitars ._., and vocals too

  • holy shit it's the god of the talent XD

  • You forgot Petrucci, he is the best guitarist in the world!!! and james sings very well too!!

  • DT is the union of the greatests talents in the world :D!!

  • Live at budokan *-*

  • Ugh. Took me a solid month to learn this solo. About 3 weeks was playing it slow and just tapping Ad11 chords down the Em scale which I believe this section is in. I made my own way to play it to make it easier for me, which required more tapping on the 4th fret, then 5th ect ect.

    - Martin

  • IMO you are right

  • @trotskyfication

    Jordan's fault! :@

  • the most famous bass solo

when you heard it in 90's, it was a kick ass

  • @MalcolmDrummer

    Not anymore? :P

  • Amazing

  • Finally...a John Myung bass solo where you can actually HEAR the bass.

  • Agreed, and he looks really cool with the loooong black hair too!

  • And when the camera stays on him the whole time! =)

  • Yeah, he usually doesn't get a lot of camera time, does he?

  • @dharmaseed the bass can't be heard because john myung can't either, because he doesn't speak

  • @dharmaseed DAMN STRAIT!!!!!

  • @dharmaseed what? in video this solo is more quite than in album song

  • @SgtZaqq Право, бас зазвичай Джона похований в суміші ... він досить голосно, щоб, де ви можете почути те, що він грає. Вибачте за поганий граматики, я використовував онлайн перекладач.

  • @dharmaseed hey, I understand English well ;) but this translation I can't understand :D

  • @SgtZaqq Ok. What I meant was that John's volume in the mix was louder for this solo. He's usually buried in the mix, so you can't really hear him that well.

  • @dharmaseed sadly, its only a few bands that really give the bass guitar the volume it deserves, only in this bands you can really apreciate it..

  • hehehe... try to search this bassist... just type bassisti

  • He's so good....so fast...

  • probably the loudest that I've heard this solo live. He is never loud enough. It's a shame too, it's such a great solo!

  • so hard to play loud, I learned it and at that speed you can barely tap the strings hard enough and get the accuracy he does. I think he should use a pedal or something to just increase the presence of it

  • I think JMX actually uses a compressor live...

  • man I cannot not give you a thumb's up on your'e comment, its so Accuretaly RIGHT! :D

  • @GuillermoSmyser Yeah , thing he must buy a pedal for the volume

  • @GuillermoSmyser lol yea thats whats awesome about he score concert. you can hear him clear as day

  • It's live in Prudnik.Really.

  • what show/dvd is this?

  • Live at Budokan

  • Its live in Budokan. Though it is an instrumedly featuring a range of songs such as Hells Kitche, Dance of Eternity, Erotomania and a couple of LTE songs (there might be a couple more).

There was a string of the Metropolis solo tied in with various parts of the whole medley, get the DVD, I reccomend it :)

  • if i say AMAZIN it would be nothing of this special solo..!! Respect him

  • Dude, How does he play that, I have the basics but I play it nearly as fast as that, good god. one of my Fav Prog rock bassists right here,

  • this guy is so much underestimated..

  • Comment removed

  • huh...................... HOW THE FUCK DOES HE PLAYS WITH HIS RIGHT HAND XD

god damn it I tried this solo so many times and I can't still get the right hand tricks gawd xD

  • The technique he's using is called "tapping", if that helps. What it is is you hit a string with a finger on your right hand, like a hammer on, and then you pull off to a note that you have fretted with your left hand. When you do this it helps to do a kind of downward flick with your right hand finger, it helps keep the string ringing out.

You may already know this, but I just thought I'd throw it out just in case :)

  • i got it up until the 32nd notes

  • look it up from his prg bass concepts vid

he explains it and i learned it off of that =]

  • It's just you.

  • HE'S THE MEN YOU KNOW!

  • he's just so awesome that he needs to be described in the plural!

  • John Myungs. :-)

  • cool his signature rxb XD

  • wow, what a beast

  • Esse solo é massa! Não toco. Más é filé. Não faço a mínima idéia do que o povo tá escrevendo aqui, pois não falo inglês.. Que gosado, não?rsrsr

  • can this be done on a regular 4-string bass? just curious, so i can learn it.

  • Yup, the song was originally recorded on one. :)

  • It's easier on a 4 string as well. Good luck, the notes are easy; but the timing and staying on tempo is hard to get down.

  • im learning it on my four string right now

    it hurts...so heads up XD

  • Good luck bud!

  • i can play it

just not anywhere close to up to speed XD

  • that's just clean

  • awesome

  • wow, i commented on this video like a year ago people, anyone insulted by my comment please refrain from responding to it cuz it's getting really old...

  • pretucci is one of the best... last names ive ever heard. jealous.

  • Hahahaha that was hilarious dude

  • I respect Cliff's playing ability and the fact that he was one of the founders of metal bass but, in my opinion I happen to think that Myung is a better player technically, but I think both are amazing, oh and I play bass too

  • oooooooh let me put a thumbs down there.

  • i want to see myung in slap style......

  • dat some bad ass shit right der

  • sans interet

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAno. honestly cliff burton had talent. but i would have loved to see cliff play this. myung could play anesthia no problem

  • yea anesthia is actually easy as hell. its all endurance. not technical. you compare any myung solo to a burton solo you will see the differnce. cliff burton was hands down the best bassist in metallica but sorry hes gonna be 2nd best to myung anyday

  • just because something is faster doesnt mean its harder. and myung can go just as fast if not faster than cliff

  • Everbody knows Chuck Manson, does that make him good? Cliff is well known because Metallica made it big, and people started to buy backwards and feel sad for his death. Yes, Cliff was a good bass player, but a better song writer, that is why he is remembered. Chris Squire and Geddy Lee were doing it before Cliff and I would put money on those two not being the first. So first or fastest doesn't equal best, nor does being more technical, there is no best bass player, just people's favourite

  • Dude first off NEVER compare Manson to a legend like Cliff. Now I do agree that theres only favorites. People were buyin just as many Metallica records as Ratt and bon jovi, and that was prior to the black album. I wasn't saying Cliff was first, I was sayin he was doin it before DT.

  • What does being first mean? It means bugger all. Cliff was before Dream Theater yes, that much is obvious, but HIV comes before AIDS, so by your rationale HIV is superior?

  • What?
