hey duudes, for those who want to learn this at a nice pace, check out my channel. you CAN use a 4 string for it as well. but besides that, this is insane. I have no idea how he does this without ever fucking up
It's quite easy to play. But what makes a good solo? Does it sound good? Yes, I think it does. Does it fit well in the song. I think it's a nice change and it is also quite unexpected. It doesn't matter what technique you use. As long as it fits and doesn't sound out of place.
@Blacksplayer it's bass being played almost unaccompanied where the bass is taking the lead role in the music being played. Whether or not you personally enjoy something is not a contributing factor to something being a solo or not.
@themightygermanman Not sure, but I can tell that before using Music Man basses he used Yamaha, you can find that in several videos of whenever they were recording different albums.
Its a Yamaha Prototype RBX2JM. He's had two signature models, a RBX2JM, and the previous model, a RBX6JM. Both are alder bodies, but the 6JM Model had a 35" scale, two pickups, onboard EQ, and a cool infinity inlay. The 2JM went down to 1 pickup, vol/pickup selection, limited EQ, 34" scale, solid gray finish, and yin-yang inlay.
This is probably the model of a perfect bass solo. It stops the song dead in its tracks and says: "Hey you! Yes you! Look at me! I am God! Fall to your knees and worship me!... Ok I'm done now."
@TheLastVoid Then again, food poisoning utterly destroys the voice. I know for a fact he hasn't fully recovered, simply listen to Black Clouds and Silver Linings right after hearing Metropolis. Hundreds of people bash LaBrie for being lame, but man...he's a trooper.
Ugh. Took me a solid month to learn this solo. About 3 weeks was playing it slow and just tapping Ad11 chords down the Em scale which I believe this section is in. I made my own way to play it to make it easier for me, which required more tapping on the 4th fret, then 5th ect ect.
@SgtZaqq Право, бас зазвичай Джона похований в суміші ... він досить голосно, щоб, де ви можете почути те, що він грає. Вибачте за поганий граматики, я використовував онлайн перекладач.
@SgtZaqq Ok. What I meant was that John's volume in the mix was louder for this solo. He's usually buried in the mix, so you can't really hear him that well.
so hard to play loud, I learned it and at that speed you can barely tap the strings hard enough and get the accuracy he does. I think he should use a pedal or something to just increase the presence of it
Its live in Budokan. Though it is an instrumedly featuring a range of songs such as Hells Kitche, Dance of Eternity, Erotomania and a couple of LTE songs (there might be a couple more).
There was a string of the Metropolis solo tied in with various parts of the whole medley, get the DVD, I reccomend it :)
The technique he's using is called "tapping", if that helps. What it is is you hit a string with a finger on your right hand, like a hammer on, and then you pull off to a note that you have fretted with your left hand. When you do this it helps to do a kind of downward flick with your right hand finger, it helps keep the string ringing out.
You may already know this, but I just thought I'd throw it out just in case :)

yeah it is easy i'll give you that, but i'm talkin about his other solos. i love dt,don't get me wrong, but myung couldn't shine cliffs shoes. i mean he's very technical, but clliff was doin the fast 16th note runs way before dream theater was.

I'm not saying fast equals hard, i'm sayin cliff was doin it first. Just because he went to berkley doesn't make him better. metallica was one of dt's influences,so you can have your opinion, but theres a reason that everyone knows cliff.
Everbody knows Chuck Manson, does that make him good? Cliff is well known because Metallica made it big, and people started to buy backwards and feel sad for his death. Yes, Cliff was a good bass player, but a better song writer, that is why he is remembered.
