  • @antonopa1 You can find quartz and other sufficiently hard rocks in several places. Streams, rocky outcroppings, etc. will have them. Or, if you live in the city like me, you can go to a park or other gravel-paved place - the walkways will probably have quartz or other. That's where I got mine for this very purpose! Good luck.

What model Opinel is that you're using. I'm looking to pick one up and that size looks great? Is it a No.8?

    Cheers matey.

  • @Winky867

    Thanks for subscribing.

Yeah, it's a very handy knife. I don't know for sure what size it is, but it's probably a No 8.

  • 101 Ways To get Arrested for Arson

  • @Winky867

It's not arson if it's your own stuff....

  • talking 'bout braaivleis why don't you do a series on South African cooking?

Great channel by the way, looking forward to your next installment.

  • @verflaks

That's an interesting idea. Maybe I should finish THIS one first, though.

  • I wonder why you are wearing that band-aid.

  • @weWILLskate

    Authenticity.

Because I "cut" myself at the beginning of the video. Was going to do a whole bit where I exaggerated the cutting for comedic effect and put on lots of plasters (band aids). But it was silly and too long so I edited it out.

The two band aids (one is transparent) remained in the scene where I made the fire.

    Well spotted, though.

  • OONGA BOONGA!!!!

  • Check out the entry on urbandictionary

  • @ROBwithaB lol it said something about caveman sexual intercourse..

  • Is it just me or is there no #13?

  • I hope those birds have fire insurance!

  • @tomken8dy

    Funny comment.

  • @ROBwithaB

    - Not if you're a bird. :P

  • Your awesome

  • @123dan120

This is basically a science channel.

But let's try to keep that a secret, lest people suddenly think I'm not cool.

  • Rob, you are one crazy ass MOFO!!! ;->

  • @PeterJohnJnb

    I do my best.

  • unga bunga, unga bunga...

  • hey man what kind of a hat is that you wearing i mean the model name, do you know where can i buy one of your hat that you wearing right now

  • @ODsurvivalskills

They're made in South Africa. I think the brand is "Rogue".

I got this one at a place called LKB in Nelspruit. They sell farm supplies etc.

But that's probably not going to help you.

I've also seen them at Outdoor Warehouse, which is a national chain.

Of course, the ones in the shops come minus the feathers and other bits I picked up in the bush.

  • @ROBwithaB ooh thanks for the information but do you know and online place i can buy ? and i really like your hat can you make a video about your hat plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • @ODsurvivalskills

Yeah, okay. I'll make a video. Not sure how many people might watch it, though.

  • dang sio freaking funny nice vid

  • @thajokershater

    Thanks.

There are another 87 on the way. You might consider subscribing?

  • @Vulcan328

    Yes. Soon.

"Soon" being a relative term, subject to the vagaries of African Time, climbing expeditions, social life, work, kids the weather, and viewer feedback.

  • I find this video easy to masturbate to. Particularly at 0:23. :)

  • @MoodyMellerina

How come I attract all the weirdos??

(Yes, it was a rhetorical question.)

  • @ROBwithaB Actually, it's Roberta who is attracting the weirdos. But I don't blame them, she's fucking hot!

  • @MoodyMellerina

Allow me to explain the meaning of the word "rhetorical"....

  • @ROBwithaB Please do. :) I thoroughly enjoy moments when you go to create lengths to explain things that I already know. It amuses me. YOU... amuse me.

  • @ROBwithaB Your a douche.

  • @megacarl87

So, what part of "rhetorical" did you not understand?

And by the way, that one's rhetorical too.

  • @ROBwithaB Btw your hat is stupid.

  • @megacarl87

That hat knows calculus. And rocket science.

    And brain perjury,

  • Good work!

PS what is the name of hairy lady in bikiny?

  • @CEMEH1980

    Cheers.

And allow me to introduce you to Roberta......

  • my man!!!! nice one

  • @niyahlanya

    Thanks.

    Sharp sharp.

(This joke will only make sense to a limited number of people.)

  • Great video as alway. But, yes there is that but, I do not think obsidien will work as it is to brittle and will just shatter. I have tried jasper and it just basically flaked off. I'll give quartz a trie. I also want to try just pyrite.

Also as you mention in a round about way is you want a high carbon steel knife. Opinal and Mora are great for this.

    cheers

  • @teb0atoz

Yeah. I must admit I haven't tried obsidian. It isn't really common around here; I was going on advice from other people. I think you might be right, though. I have tried regular glass for this and it tends to just crack off flakes from the edge. The steel blade of this knife probably comes in at about 5.5 - 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness. I see that obsidian is listed at about 5.5. I have tried tempered glass (from a oven-proof dish) and it was harder.

    When in doubt, experiment.

  • Hey Rob been awhile I see your still at it with the 101 ways to make fire. If you don't remember you inspired me to try an make fire first with a soda can. After I mastered that I moved on to friction fires using the bow drill method. At first it was very difficult but I soon learned all the little details that go into making a friction fire. I can't now make friction fires even with hard wood. Some constructive criticism this time why not try to make a fire without char cloth?

  • @superwowbros1

Glad to hear you're making such good progress.

I've had some very good success with natural smouldering tinders. One of the best I've found is the inner layer of fluffy bark from wild fig trees, rolled up into a ball.

Of course, with friction fires one doesn't need any additional char, because the process generates it's own. I haven't had much chance to film any of those. Lack of time and I'm waiting to get another camera for close-up shots of the process.

    Thanks for commenting..

  • Clearly one person thumbed this video down because they have a problem with women who have facial hair.

  • @MoodyMellerina

    What a weirdo!

(And I also have my doubts about the person who thumbed down the video...)

  • @ROBwithaB You smell....... good. :)

  • aha That was so cool and funny, I hope you`v done one Rubbing two sticks together : )

  • @jonibobs

There are probably about 15 different ways to do it with two sticks. Possibly more.

Haven't got round to filming any of them yet.

Started by using a hand cranked drill out of the toolbox (#8). That footage got lost off a computer that crashed. Have to re-film sometime. Waiting to get another camera to film some close-ups.

  • Why is #13 private and does any rock work?

  • @Tommyjai21

For this to work, you need to be able to shave tiny flakes of metal off the knife. (Because that's what sparks are. Tiny flakes of metal, with a high ratio of surface area to volume that speeds up the oxidation of the newly-exposed surface.) And for that to work, to rock needs to be harder than the knife. Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. (Diamonds being 10). The hardness of the steel of this blade is probably around 5.5.

Best way to tell is to try.

  • Why is #13 private?

  • @Tommyjai21

    It's private.

    It might go public again.

  • Hey, man - amazing tutorial, as always. I was easily and perfectly able to create fire with this method. Quick question though - any advice on putting out a fire? Or maybe something about escaping a fire that has overtaken your house in an absurdly rapid manner? Anything would be helpful at this point... I'm in a bit of a hurry.

  • @genesisproject

Oops. I suppose I should have replied to this comment a little quicker.

At this point my advice to scream and run might be a bit late.

  • This is my favorite method so far, great video ROB!

  • @PCGamerPortal

    Thanks for watching.

I've been doing a lot of experimenting lately.

    More videos coming soon.

  • Et Voila! An other use for the timeless icon. Very funny and creative video, THANK YOU!

  • @OpiKnife

Thanks for the comment. Feel free to use this video to market the above-mentioned timeless icon as you see fit.

  • I'm so happy you finally posted a new video! Also, may I mention that was a beautiful knife, and practical, none the less.

  • @goshelnut

    Opinel.

It's the carbon steel in the blade that does it for me. Unfortunately the beauty of this particular specimen has been compromised by repeated smiting at the hands of Mr Quartz.

  • I'm so happy you finally posted a new video! Also, may I mention that was a beautiful knife, and practical, none the less. What is the name brand of that knife?

  • @goshelnut

    Opinel.

  • I'm so happy you finally posted a new video!

  • @goshelnut

Not as happy as I am.

  • Rob-B,

The song with the fire dance... don't I remember that from an old Tarzan movie?

    Thanks for the good vid!

  • @HikerJohn316

Tarzan stole it from ME !

    Thanks for your regular comments.

  • Greatness; Thank you.

  • @Fookwah

    Cheers.

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.

And then there are some of us who spend years avoiding greatness and prefer to pursue silliness instead.

  • @ROBwithaB If I ever visit SA, I'm taking you to a free dinner of your choice. Keep it up my good man; it's good in the world IMO.

  • Bravo Rob, ont ajouté les personnages!

  • @Christofava

Ne me blâmez pas si cette réponse n'est pas grammaticalement correcte. J'ai utilisé Google Translate.

  • @WebDragonAZ

    Thanks, Batm/Batman.

  • @drail9884

    Damn....

    Pleased you enjoyed. Thank you.

  • wow such a simple safty tip like use the knife closed and yet so rarley seen on a vid that show fire from hitting a rock with a knife.

  • @cr0cket01

Sometimes, common sense is the least common sense of all.

It took me a while to work out the obvious here.

  • You sir have earned 1,000 internets for this vid

  • @TheAnderpov

    Wow. 1,000.

    I am honoured.

In fact, if you don't mind, I've prepared a little speech.....

  • You're so cute. I can't get enough of this video. It makes me smile. :)

Feel free to watch it as many times as you like.

    Thanks.

But why do you sound surprised?

  • Very nice Dude :D keep on rocking ^^

    Greet s from Germany

    Izulabite

  • @Izulabite

    Thanks for the comment.

    Enjoy the spring weather there.

  • Very nice video Rob. Good to see the your exhibitionist pyromania still isn't responding to treatment. =)

BTW, have that very same knife in my own kit.

  • @1q2w3e1z2x3c

    It's incurable, apparently.

Yeah, they're good knives. Can't handle too much moisture, though. The handle tends to get rotten if allowed to soak in water too often, and then snaps at the joint (ferrule?).

  • Superb !!!!

that was wicked ..and Roberta????? pphhhhhwwwoooaarrrrrrrrrr !!!!

    your best yet Rob!

  • @bassfuryvi

    Thanks.

    Favouriting is always appreciated.

And if you find one particularly good, you might even want to have it as a featured vid on your channel page....???

My goal is to make the videos entertaining enough so that people will actually do that of their own accord without me even having to ask. I probably have a way to go still.

  • Thanks for the incredibly funny vids - always brightens my day a bit!

  • @targetbuttmonkey

    Cheers.

  • your vids keep getting better and better lol

  • @250lespaul

    Pleased you enjoyed.

    Tell your friends.....

  • Awesome!

  • @Dozzer

    Cheers.

    Thanks.

Don't tell me, tell your friends....

  • Another cool vid, they always make me giggle, thanks Rob :D

  • @lexacor

    Cheers.

I do a fair bit of giggling while filming them.

  • Thanks!!! watching any other video of youtube will be boring now.

if you finish all 101, your work will become a big land mark for a long time.

Don't stop working on this project, is ambitious, monumental and your stile as well as humor are exquisite.

    Keep on track !

  • @tobarismo

    Thanks a lot.

    Eighty seven to go....

  • Rob, this vid takes YouTube to an all new level of sophistication and sagacity. Your charm and expertise are the perfect chemistry, making your instructional aids, lets say, hard-to-forget. Keep 'em coming, but might I suggest a less "hard on the eyes" female co-star next time? lmao

  • @RowAshore

    Sophistication, sagacity.... and sibilance?

And Roberta is one of those rare individuals whose "inner beauty" overshadows the exterior appearance.
