@antonopa1 You can find quartz and other sufficiently hard rocks in several places. Streams, rocky outcroppings, etc. will have them. Or, if you live in the city like me, you can go to a park or other gravel-paved place - the walkways will probably have quartz or other. That's where I got mine for this very purpose! Good luck.
Kind of similar to your Rock and Rasp video, but a lot more practical when you're out in the wilderness. :) I enjoy these videos, and I hope you keep making them!
Yes Rob ah with a B. Youare a funny guy, but on the serious side I would like for you to cretice for me in a video" who invented the birds nest"? Who might give a clue.
Because I "cut" myself at the beginning of the video. Was going to do a whole bit where I exaggerated the cutting for comedic effect and put on lots of plasters (band aids). But it was silly and too long so I edited it out.
The two band aids (one is transparent) remained in the scene where I made the fire.
@ROBwithaB ooh thanks for the information but do you know and online place i can buy ? and i really like your hat can you make a video about your hat plzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

@ROBwithaB Please do. :) I thoroughly enjoy moments when you go to create lengths to explain things that I already know. It amuses me. YOU... amuse me.
Great video as alway. But, yes there is that but, I do not think obsidien will work as it is to brittle and will just shatter. I have tried jasper and it just basically flaked off. I'll give quartz a trie. I also want to try just pyrite.
Also as you mention in a round about way is you want a high carbon steel knife. Opinal and Mora are great for this.
Yeah. I must admit I haven't tried obsidian. It isn't really common around here; I was going on advice from other people. I think you might be right, though. I have tried regular glass for this and it tends to just crack off flakes from the edge. The steel blade of this knife probably comes in at about 5.5 - 6 on the Mohs scale of hardness. I see that obsidian is listed at about 5.5. I have tried tempered glass (from a oven-proof dish) and it was harder.
Hey Rob been awhile I see your still at it with the 101 ways to make fire. If you don't remember you inspired me to try an make fire first with a soda can. After I mastered that I moved on to friction fires using the bow drill method. At first it was very difficult but I soon learned all the little details that go into making a friction fire. I can't now make friction fires even with hard wood. Some constructive criticism this time why not try to make a fire without char cloth?
I've had some very good success with natural smouldering tinders. One of the best I've found is the inner layer of fluffy bark from wild fig trees, rolled up into a ball.
Of course, with friction fires one doesn't need any additional char, because the process generates it's own. I haven't had much chance to film any of those. Lack of time and I'm waiting to get another camera for close-up shots of the process.
There are probably about 15 different ways to do it with two sticks. Possibly more.
Haven't got round to filming any of them yet.
Started by using a hand cranked drill out of the toolbox (#8). That footage got lost off a computer that crashed. Have to re-film sometime. Waiting to get another camera to film some close-ups.
For this to work, you need to be able to shave tiny flakes of metal off the knife. (Because that's what sparks are. Tiny flakes of metal, with a high ratio of surface area to volume that speeds up the oxidation of the newly-exposed surface.) And for that to work, to rock needs to be harder than the knife. Quartz has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale. (Diamonds being 10). The hardness of the steel of this blade is probably around 5.5.
Hey, man - amazing tutorial, as always. I was easily and perfectly able to create fire with this method. Quick question though - any advice on putting out a fire? Or maybe something about escaping a fire that has overtaken your house in an absurdly rapid manner? Anything would be helpful at this point... I'm in a bit of a hurry.
It's the carbon steel in the blade that does it for me. Unfortunately the beauty of this particular specimen has been compromised by repeated smiting at the hands of Mr Quartz.
I'm so happy you finally posted a new video! Also, may I mention that was a beautiful knife, and practical, none the less. What is the name brand of that knife?
Yeah, they're good knives. Can't handle too much moisture, though. The handle tends to get rotten if allowed to soak in water too often, and then snaps at the joint (ferrule?).

Hey Rob been awhile I see your still at it with the 101 ways to make fire. If you don't remember you inspired me to try an make fire first with a soda can. I can't now make friction fires even with hard wood. Some constructive criticism this time why not try to make a fire without char cloth?

Glad to hear you're making such good progress.
