This is great! The only other version of this song that's worth mentioning that I've heard was Fats Domino, which was,of course, great. Gale Storm was my first crush when I was just a little kid. Now,fifty some years later,I still get goose bumps when I see things like this!
I WATCHED MY LITTLE MARGIE EACH WEEK, BUT NEVER APPRECIATED THIS BEAUTIFUL PERSON AND GREAT SINGER. I ONLY WISH THAT I WAS SMART ENOUGH TO APPRECIATE HER 50 YEARS AGO..GREAT TALENT. I THINK HOLLYWOOD UNDERATED THIS BEAUTY.
@grizz22604 yeah right. another robbery. little richard was asked about pat boone doing his songs. little richard said he was glad to get the royality checks. and whitney houston can thank dolly parton for writing "and i will always love you" 20 years before whitney sang. another classic robbed by black america.
@sdcow there's a big difference about covering a song 20 years later. gale storm took this song the same year it was released by smiley lewis. so i dont really get your comment. so yes it was robbed. it was a shame what happened to some of the early black artist when they got there big break through singles taken from them and released by more popular artist so the public would think it was they're song.
@grizz22604 i was not being serious. groups do release the same song in the same year. in 1965 the song "concrete and clay" was released in the uk by Unit 4+2 and by eddie rambeau in the us. the song "der kommisar" was released by Falco in 1982 and within a year by After the Fire. people love Beyonce's version of the Etta James hit "At Last" (1960). but the song was originally performed by ray eberle and pat friday with the glenn miller band in 1941. songs are written to be sung - by anyone.
I felt like hearing "I Hear You Knocking" by Dave Edmunds.. always thought this was only a 70's hit.. seems Fats Domino and this Gale Storm got there first in the 50's.... who knew?! ha ha!
Oh, I'm sure it was Gale's version you heard. This was a live television broadcast so it is going to sound different since she is actually singing it and not miming to her gold record.
This is great! Heard this song on the radio on a 50's station while on a roadtrip, catchy tune! The version we heard though, was a female, but sang much faster. Glad I found it here, thanks for the posting! Pretty racy video for the 50's!
Isn't that The Penguin ion the background? (LMAO!!) And not to mention those scenic backgrounds are HILARIOUS!! Seriously though, GREAT singing and arrangement. RIP Gale.
I was watching this on my DVD collections of comedy and when I heard this song, I didn't realize that the "I Hear You Knocking" by Dave Edmunds back in 1970 was actually a cover version. Ya learn something every day.
This is from "The Milton Berle Show" from the mid 1950's. Jan Murray was guest hosting due to Milton Berle being sick. I have a Four-Disc DVD on this era of comedy.
I've always liked her version of this song the best of anyone's.
I'm sorry there was a technical glitch at 2:40 when the boom microphone didn't keep up with her as she moved across the stage, and her voice is briefly lost.
To me, the staging here is surprisingly suggestive for the 1950s. At the start, she's handling and tossing away the man's hat, gloves, cane, and shirt before she lounges on what looks like the bed they would've shared, emphasizing that they live together.
What a production and all done live! Gale's long experience as an actress, comedienne, singer and dancer all emerge here, and her long, lean build (which wasn't apparent usually in her "My Little Margie" wardrobe). What she did with this song was a wonder, clearly inspired by Mae West in its sexiness played strictly for fun (Mae loved innuendo; she didn't like smut; Gale didn't even like innuendo!). It provided a spectacular start for an unexpected recording career.
@waynebrasler Gale Storm's talent, beauty, voice and figure were real. She didn't have to go to extremes to deliver beautifully wholesome performances. She just put her natural talent, beauty and figure (WOW!)to used her God given talent. An honest, self-respecting lady. I adored her and didn't miss an opportunity to see her.. She dared to use a personality in some of her vocal numbers which were not an easy fit for her.But it was called for and she delivered. God Bless, Miss Storm

Wow. This is great. And so is she.
Maybe it is another R&B classic stolen by white America.
But Gale didn't steal the song here - she stole the show!
