what is the point in watching it run in circles. also its not safe for those people to be standing there. seems like a waist of money. go buy an rc airplane. that takes some real talent
Aerodynamics are very important. The car is very narrow, long and sleek. The wheels are "inboard". The engine is completely covered as you don't need any cooling during this short run.
This setup, without any steering, avoids any human interference. The fastest CAR wins the races. Or one could say that the carbuilder with the greatest technical skills wins the race.
yeah i know the speed of the wire the farther out is faster but imagine if the dude on the outside tripped into the circle.. OMG that would suck. it would be some final destination. but very cool id like to see one in person
The rules just permit a internal combustion engine with a displacement of up to 10 ccm. That's the twist with this. A methanol engine and drive on the wheels. 200 mph is really cool with this in mind.
With a rocket engine it would just be to easy to get high speed, so that would be no fun.
I'm sure that this isn't the only thing that these people to, any more than wide-opern engin endurance competitions are the only thing than people do at car meets. Just a bit of fun, that is probably a very small part of their lives. :)
Nice job sm7tjc. More uncontrovertible evidence that 200MPH tether cars do exist and they're almost too fast to see. But I need to know, was that a bird, butterfly or bee in the background <G>
I dunno, to me these are'nt that impressive. Building an actual Radio control car that you can actually control where it's going to go, keeping it on the ground, and getting it up over 100mph is far more impressive then putting a direct drive engine on a rear axle and letting it run along a wire for a few seconds.
Well then dont call them cars. Tether racing pre-dates r/c by eons. And if you think its too simple for you, build one and go play, then talk. These guys accomplishments would impress you if you tried it.
Fine tuning a machine and making it go very fast is an art, thankfully not a lost one.

If a friend of mine invited me to this, after about 15 minutes and 3 or 4 cars I would be like "um... can we go now, I have seen enough of this"

why dont you make a 'C' section track and get rid of the tether?
must cause alot of drag...
Hdude74 1 year ago
@Hdude74 Then it would no longer be a tether car and conform to international rules.

vad betyder tether?
l33thustla 3 years ago
Tether betyder lina, band, eller liknande, som håller fast något. T.ex. ett hundkoppel eller linan till en linbil :-)

coolt :D

man can you break the sound barrier with one of those?
lol i googled it and lol: the barriers at 767.58 mph so i guess not lol.
(maybe something with 2 jet turbine engines could hehe)

does aerodynamics ever enter into the build?

No one has called it remote controlled.... ?? ....

ok!! let me put it another way!!! round and round and round!! and round!! and round!! steering would be nice!! then there would be some skill in it!!

@chippett09 - nope, not even that. These cars run FLAT STRAP.

you kno wat would be screwed up, if the guy in the middle that has to get it up to speed by spinning the cable fell in then he would be screwed.

DO me a favor, add a rocket and see how much faster it can go.

did the person just stopped the tether car with a broom? I don't know, it looks like it.
funkmasterflip 4 years ago 2
Yes. The car has an "antenna" connected to the fuel cutoff valve. You hit the "antenna" with a broom to kill the engine.
sm7tjc 4 years ago 2
lol wonder what would happen if the cable broke
lawlessSaturn 4 years ago 11
hmmm... good question!
flamethrower1411 4 years ago
it actually wouldn't unless there is a fray in the cable. the cable is extremely strong.

@antiricer4u Only if you build from scratch. Kits can do that now with light mods.
