No, that's not what Dyson is saying. If he were saying that Obama has not embraced his blackness "exclusively", then that would mean that he wants Obama to focus only on Black people or on being Black. When he talks about Obama embracing Blackness "explicitly", he's saying that Obama has not done or said anything as President (or as a candidate) that would define him as a Black man or as a part of the Black community. I'm not so sure that I agree with Dyson's position on that issue.

I agree with you (and Dyson to some extent). What Obama would like to do and what he's able to do as president may be two different things (as Dyson said people are watching him closely to make sure he isn't doing too much to benefit minorities, especially blacks). I don't know that Obama is a complete uncle tom as some people are claiming. And some of Dyson's arguments are petty and only distract from the more important issue of holding politicians accountable.

The principals of ethnic identity are the primary basis for African people, any people for that matter, forming solidarity. Without it all people parish and thats basically the root our problem politically, economically and socially. Cultural unity would be tremendously helpful at this juncture in our history.

On one hand, Dr. Dyson makes some valid points. All politicians, regardless if theyre the first Black, thefirst female, etc. to be elected. They should be held accountable to the people who supported and voted for them. I voted for Obama, but I dont agree with everything hes done (such as the bank bailouts vs. the treatment of GM), or all of his positions (such as his opposition to school vouchers).
On the other hand, Dysons comment about not having been invited to the White House and some of his other comments make it seem as though hes jumped on the Tavis Smiley bandwagon. His seeming bitterness distracts from the valid arguments he made about holding politicians accountable.

Well, I agree with holding politicians accountable, but I also find Dyson's sudden harsh criticism of Obama suspicious. Comparing him to Jackie Robinson to imply that he's an uncle tom and that we'd be better off if we had a "willie mays" type of president, that's not what he was saying before. You mentioned of Obama helping the underprivileged based on race and not class is interesting because yet again, you like so many fail to understand that many if not all black activists have to fight on both fronts and have historically. Black activists are now making sure that black people are included and not excluded like is so often the case.
We should all be smart enough to know that poor white Americans are treated far , far differently from poor black Americans. The issue with Obama is similar to why black womanists have had such a hard time discussing issues of sexism. When you have someone being attacked or victimized by another group in this case Obama and in the case of black womanists, black men, the idea that you are joining in with those on the other side degrading whatever individual or group becomes what you are attacked with.

Obamas job is to be the president of the US, not exert how Black he can be. And that is what we need to understand first and foremost. Still, I don't think the U.S. President should be specifically concerned towards blacks more than other citizens. However, I do think that he should be specifically concerned about the welfare of under served communities, the middle class and the poor, groups which happen to include colored people disproportionately. No, that's not what Dyson is saying. If he were saying that Obama has not embraced his blackness "exclusively", then that would mean that he wants Obama to focus only on Black people or on being Black. When he talks about Obama embracing Blackness "explicitly", he's saying that Obama has not done or said anything as President (or as a candidate) that would define him as a Black man or as a part of the Black community. I'm not so sure that I agree with Dyson's position on that issue.

I agree with you (and Dyson to some extent). What Obama would like to do and what he's able to do as president may be two different things (as Dyson said people are watching him closely to make sure he isn't doing too much to benefit minorities, especially blacks). I don't know that Obama is a complete uncle tom as some people are claiming. And some of Dyson's arguments are petty and only distract from the more important issue of holding politicians accountable.

I fundamentally agree with Mr. Dysons political analysis here. My serious political critique of him and other so called Black intellectuals and supporters of American hegemony is didnt he (they) know all this before hand was coming (of course). Therefore I dont want to hear his crying because he helped sale the Obama deception to our people. Its time to weak up Africans. AFRICANS MUST UNITE!

The principals of ethnic identity are the primary basis for African people, any people for that matter, forming solidarity. Without it all people parish and thats basically the root our problem politically, economically and socially. Cultural unity would be tremendously helpful at this juncture in our history.

On one hand, Dr. Dyson makes some valid points. All politicians, regardless if theyre the first Black, thefirst female, etc. to be elected. They should be held accountable to the people who supported and voted for them. I voted for Obama, but I dont agree with everything hes done (such as the bank bailouts vs. the treatment of GM), or all of his positions (such as his opposition to school vouchers).

I will say that Dyson's recent comments are a far cry from what he was saying about Obama during the presidential campaign as a surrogate for him, see here:

It's hard to believe that after knowing someone for nearly 20 years (as Dyson claims he's known Obama since 1991), Dyson would now suddenly insinuate that Obama may be "playing" the people who voted for him.

I don't know what Dyson believed in because I'm not him, but I would say he probably had hope for Barack like many others & most black people today still won't acknowledge that Barack ignores them, that's one of the key reason's why I agree with Dyson's comments on holding him accountable

O I know Dyson was a hard stomper supporter for Barack but at the end of the day looking at all of Barack's actions & comments Dyson's point still stands valid, now Dyson probably did know him for 20 years as stated, just because you knew or know someone for that long doesn't mean you also know the future, people actions & mentality do change, I doubt Barack would still have the mentality in 09 compared to 91,

Well, I agree with holding politicians accountable, but I also find Dyson's sudden harsh criticism of Obama suspicious. Comparing him to Jackie Robinson to imply that he's an uncle tom and that we'd be better off if we had a "willie mays" type of president, that's not what he was saying before. And I'm sure he's had discussions with Obama since 1991. We don't know what either of them is really thinking.

I extremely concur with your political analysis. Unfortunately, in our historical quest for freedom in this country, collectively we have been reactionaries and not students. As opposed to structuring authentic power, were trying to prove our acceptance to White America and ruling class. If honestly studied how power is facilitated in America, we would know that a Black politician is only there to advance the agenda of the ruling class, right and left.

Prof. Dyson didn't say anything in this video that some of us already know. He's a lawyer and a politician. He told you what you wanted to hear to get elected. Yet, within the black community, it is blasphemy to speak such things.
He is now the "figure-head" of the biggest imperialist machine in the world. The same one who showed us our votes never counted in 2000. He's the spokesman of this machine to keep the "white interest" in mind. He's not going to touch any topics dealing with "black".

Dr. Dyson has some valid points but if Obama is uplifting the underprivileged in the nation, the he should do it based on their status... NOT race. Unfortunately he will face scrutiny from his black peers because of his position.

No one is asking Obama to be exclusive. This is my issue, why are people discussing this extreme. Nobody is saying that nor expecting that.
You mentioned of Obama helping the underprivileged based on race and not class is interesting because yet again, you like so many fail to understand that many if not all black activists have to fight on both fronts and have historically. Black activists are now making sure that black people are included and not excluded like is so often the case.

We should all be smart enough to know that poor white Americans are treated far , far differently from poor black Americans. So while class (as I keep saying, over and over and over again) is the big issue, race cannot be ignored esp. when dealing with housing discrimination/fair housing issues that effect people of color regardless of class.

The issue with Obama is similar to why black womanists have had such a hard time discussing issues of sexism. When you have someone being attacked or victimized by another group in this case Obama and in the case of black womanists, black men, the idea that you are joining in with those on the other side degrading whatever individual or group becomes what you are attacked with.

You have to understand that he is president of the whole country and I do not expect him to be making special provision for AAs, he can adress poverty, the 10 to 1 for crack and coke, he can provide more stimulus for cities and that way, the govt. can deal with the issues affecting all people and not blacks..... Dyson sounds like he's mad cos he has not yet seem the white house..

This is when I get angry. No one is saying that Obama must not be president of all people. It is interesting that everyother president got away with only being president of white people but anyway. You completely contradicted yourself. Those who are asking Obama to address certain matters rather than brushing them off when asked as he has done on countless occassions are not demanding much but to be treated equally like every other citizen.

Although I agree with much of what brotha Dyson had to say, we as a community should give Obama a full 4 years before we get upset at him. Obamas job is to be the president of the US, not exert how Black he can be. And that is what we need to understand first and foremost. To tell you the truth Obama is not of slave blood so he doesnt carry the pain body of being Black in America so we couldnt expect much of him in that area.
