@amator827 A 3 Star SUV vs say a 5 star Fiesta, even though the Fiesta is a small car, will be safer in the Fiesta. Remember, its about speed, its also about size but it has to be a BIG differnece. Like a Truck and a Fiesta. An SUV isnt that much bigger and therefore will have a smaller impact on the results.

Its all about sending the energy around the passengers. So if the cant do that, then YES... the foot pedals will break your legs and the roof will collapse on you.

Goes to show you paranoid mothers: buying a big ugly SUV won't guarantee your children's safety. Now can you please stop clogging up the roads and buy normal cars. A Ford Focus ST (the new one not the one shown here) and VW Golf GTI both have 5*s, so they're as safe as any Range Rover. And are a lot more fun to drive, much cheaper, more economical and better looking.

I rolled my 2000 Freelander 4 times after hitting a barrier at 70 km per hour and it didn't look as bad as the NCAP one. Go figure. What does this mean? Are the crash test in line with real world crashes?

@roastoo00ooveges all depends on how you crashed it. these tests are total frontal impact, i presume you only clipped the barrier rather than slamming full on into it? What NCAP's tests generally involve is the car either hitting or being hit by an object square on.

@Mikeb1001 Oh yeah, I slammed into the barrier at about a 10 deg angle, launched, rotated almost 360 deg, and then tumbeled through trees and fence posts. The song playing on the CD was by Cat Stevens, and didnt miss a beat. The parcel shelf cover held 20kg of tools and junk in the back. This impressed me the most.

My Dad is getting me a 2004 Lincoln Town Car and I am very pleased that I am getting one. This is said to have the best crash test scores all around of any car ever built. The 2003 - 2008 Lincoln Town Car scored 5 stars for the side, frontal, and rollover crash tests for all occupants. I should feel pretty safe when driving this car.

@DSKayFan1 The Town Car is a very safe car in a crash. The problem is that the Town Car is more likely to crash than a l0t of other cars because the handling is horrible. I'm pretty sure the current Acura MDX has a better crash test rating, and given that it is an SUV, it is better in a head-on collision that a Town Car, but in a side impact the Town Car is probably better, although your head in a town car is at the same height as the front of the car hitting you.

A nice 1.8X Renault Engine, Lotus racing spec suspensions that takes corners very well is good handling, but should it crash... you're going to be in a world of hurt.

Newer isn't always better, though. BMW refreshed the 5-series for 2008 and they made a safe vehicle dangerous. I did horrendous in IIHS crash tests, especially for side impact.

I agree that it looks like cute, class act. This is especially true with new Freelander. Despite their higher cost, Land Rovers are my favorite SUVs. BTW, I noticed that the problems people experienced in the BMW M62 engined Range Rovers from 2003-2005 were the engine and electrical problems from the E38 7-series, including the BMW's nasty habit of having a crack in the plastic radiator. What a dreadful compromise, but now with Jaaaag engines, LRs are really making a comeback.

BUT a car should save you and your passengers should the worst happen without serious injury or damage, 1-3 star euroncap cars are generally poor in an accident while those with 4 and 5 euroncap stars are generally better in crashes. If I had a family I would go for a euroncap 4 or 5 star rated MPV, that way I would know they are going to be safe if the worst happens.

@tripleA17 The simple antidote to all this is quite simply to drive correctly in the first place, reducing the chances of you having to rely on your car's safety system. On the whole here in the UK we all drive much smaller cars anyway. there's far more Punto's, Fiesta's, Focuses and other such cars than X5s, Land Rovers or ML320s. That way the object you crash into is much lighter in the first place.

Yes it is! The cabin deforms badly,the pedals push your legs backward,the steering wheel moves into your chest and the footwell deforms badly;that's not safe in a crash that's downright dangerous!

If a car is safe in a crash, then the pedals shouldn't push your legs and ankles back,the footwells shouldn't rupture, the steering wheel should push back into your chest and the cabin shouldn't badly deform and there shouldn't be hazards under the dash which could cause serious injuries to the femurs/tibulas and the side impact protection shouldn't overload the body/chest.

the frontal wall test is one of many, NCAP 5 star means complete protection all around the vehicle, they even have pedestrian rating. Quite amusing that the BMW X5 V8 has a five star crash rating but only one for pedestrians, they get fucked 8)

I have two Freelanders, a 2005 Freelander 1 and a 2008 Freelander 2/LR2 and one thing to remember on these crash tests, they are designed for you to hit a concrete block/wall. If you are driving along and rear end someone their car will absorb the wreck as well. So at 40mph it won't be as bad as hitting a wall that doesn't move.

And my Freelander 1 is a well built car compared to the Freelander 1s that were before 2004, but the Freelander 2 is even better than the post 2004 Freelander 1.
